Online Projects, Collaboration Sites, and Publishing Opportunities

Lesson Idea Template

Name: Jocelyn Jones
Grade Level: 2
Content Area: Science
Standards Addressed: S2E3. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information
about how weather, plants, animals, and humans cause changes to the
environment. b. Construct an explanation of the causes and effects of a change to
the environment in your community.
Title of Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: Journey
North

Describe how you would use the Online Project/Collaboration
Site/Publishing Opportunity in your classroom:
Students can use this site to evaluate information about how plants cause
changes to the environment. Students can view plant and how they change
through the seasons. The students will do research on Journey north on tulips a
and evaluate different weather conditions and see how the plant reacts. Students
will then write about their findings and describe the environment they live in.
What is it like? What is the weather? What will the tulips do if we planted them in
this environment? Students will then plant tulips in a school area to observe the
changes and publish their findings online.
What technologies would be required to implement this proposed
learning activity in a classroom? Computers, website access.
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience
(note: all of them may not be addressed in the project, but most should be if you
are reaching a high LoTi Level.):
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom
and often beyond their school: students will collaborate with peers on
this site by adding to other students work. They will add their
research up and the students will be adding on to the same topic for
others to view on this site.
b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (collecting original
data and or producing original products as a result of engaging in the
project): students will plant their own tulip garden and write their
findings and results.
c. Higher-order thinking: type here
d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care
about their product: students will publish their findings and results
from their own tulip garden. Students will be able to publish original
work because they will have constructed this garden, make
observations and assess their findings.

What Level of Technology Implementation best describes this learning activity and
Why? This will be a LoTi level 5 because students will engage in 2 way
collaboration, produce a product that is meaningful to an audience, and students
will engage in higher level thinking.
How could you implement this proposed learning experience and still comply with
your districts Internet Safety and Student Privacy policies? I will let parents and
administration know what I plan on doing and monitor all internet use and
publishing. Students will use pseudonymous to protect their privacy.
