Statement of Purpose
I stand true to the fact that childhood should be a joyful time, filled with
memories of tenderness, affection, love, and carefree times. Unfortunately, not
all children are lucky enough, to have a joyful childhood. On the contrary, some
children are exposed to dangerous and neglecting environments that end up
affecting them for the rest of their lives. This matter has been in my heart for a
long time, it is something I have become passionate about due to personal
experiences and volunteering opportunities. That is why I aspire to become a
Child Welfare social worker, I am positive that with the qualities and experiences
I have acquired, I am the best fit in this prestigious program.

1. I grew up with a cousin who experienced a very rough childhood. He

dealt with neglect from a very young age due to his mothers drug
addiction. I got to see first-hand, how this experience affected his daily
life. Although I wasnt the one going through his situation, I felt his pain
and it marked me as if it were my own. Dealing with this situation,
helped me become a strong character. I was strong for my cousin but
at the same time, I was compassionate and sensible to what he was
going through. Although I was not the only one trying to help him, I felt
committed to figure out ways to get him out of that circumstance. I
fought for his well-being and I remained faithful to him until he was in a
stable condition. As a result of this experience, I developed an
immense interest in pursuing the Bachelor of Social Work degree.

2. Volunteering in a day care has been one of the best decisions Ive ever
made. Through this process I gained a clearer understanding of how
much I enjoy being around children and their families. Not only that but
since I volunteered for more than 2 years, I acquired plenty of
qualifications that have prepared me for this educational direction. For
example, throughout the whole process I developed a sense of active
listening, communication skills, social perceptiveness, and also of
service orientation. Although this is true, I can recognize that I still
have some improvements to make when dealing with tough situations.
There are times when I let the circumstance affect me more than it
should. I need to learn how to control my emotions when dealing with a
heartbreaking situation. I plan to address this weakness by preparing
myself mentally before confronting a situation and keeping in mind that
I need to be strong for the victim.

3.

Overall, I am a perfect fit in the field of social work because of all the
passion I bring to it. I believe there is a great necessity in the El Paso
area, more in specific in the region I grew up in, and it takes dedicated
individuals willing to make a change. I grew up in Montana Vista which
lies northeast of Horizon City and far east of El Paso. This community
deals with a great deal of marginalization and oppression, due to its
small population and low income. I believe that because of how
familiarized I am with the community, I will be able to relate to them
and help them with common issues. Ultimately, my goal is to make a
difference in anyones life and provide each child with the opportunities
they deserve.

To conclude, children who are raised in normal homes where all of their
necessities are met, are known to grow up as content and stable adults.
Then again, those that grow up in unpleasant and unsafe situations
frequently grow up suffering mentally and emotionally. They are
overwhelmed by all the memories from their past and some are even in
danger of repeating the same behavior they once witnessed, viewing it as
normal. I refuse to believe this is fine and will overcome any obstacle
preventing me from aiming my goal.
