Weekly Reflection
1. Practice as a member of a multi-disciplinary health care team.
I felt very independent this clinical. The first two rotations, the nurse had to tell me if
there was a new order, but not this clinical. I have started a routine to how I will plan out my
day. Right after report, I look at my patients chart to see if there is anything new ordered.
Right away, I noticed that she had an order to change IV sites. I was ready to catch IV
therapy, so I could watch. The nurse was a good teacher and allowed me to help hold my
patients arm. Then I noticed that she was scheduled for an MRI and a NPO status was
ordered. I double checked with the nurse, then reinforced that my patient could not have
anything to eat or drink until after the MRI. After the labs came back, I noticed that my
patient was taken off droplet precautions, so I took off the sign and moved the isolation cart
away. Lastly, I noticed that my patient was prescribed IV maintenance of D5NS with KCL
20 mEq. I let my instructor know, then we hung it together. I felt like a member of the team
today because I didnt need much instruction. Im planning to continue working on my
fluency of managing my plan of care and grouping together my tasks.
2. Recognize benefits and limitations of community and governmental support for family
units and individual members with illness.
What I have noticed as a student nurse is that it is difficult to find resources in the
community to help patients in the hospital. I have learned from personal experience that it is
really hard to find help, unless you know who to ask. Depending on what type of resource is
needed, nurses may be able to help locate those resources or find a social worker or case
manager to use as a resource. It is the nurses responsibility to advocate for the patient. This

means that it is the nurses responsibility to make sure the patient is receiving all the
information to needed for discharge and that includes available resources. I love it when we
discussed community resource presentations in class because there are so many resources out
there that I have never heard about.
