Transportation columns (Railroads and Airports) in the table in Q1.
Q3) Analyze the annual precipitation for each country and fill in the
Precipitation column in the table in Q1.
Q4) Fill in the last column (Agricultural use) in the table in Q1.
Q5) Which country has the largest proportion of its area devoted to
crops? El Salvador
Q6) Which country is the most mountainous? Honduras

Q7) Fill in the Transportation: Roads column in the table in Q1. Which
country has the largest proportion of its territory covered by roads?
Honduras

Task 4: Track Hurricane Mitch

Q8) When was Tropical Storm Mitch at this location? October 23 at
3am Zulu time
Q9) What was Mitchs wind speed at this location? 999 mph
Q10) When was Hurricane Mitch (cat 1) at this location? October 24 at
9am Zulu time
Q11) What was Mitchs wind speed at this location? 988 mph
Q12) When was Hurricane Mitch (cat 5) at this location? October 27 at
9pm Zulu Time
Q13) What was Mitchs wind speed at this location? 135 mph
Q14) How long did it take for Tropical Storm Mitch to become a category 5
hurricane? Write down the time for each event and determine the
difference.
Hurricane5 time point: October 26, at 12pm Zulu Time
Tropical_Storm time point: October 24 at 3am Zulu Time
Time difference: 67 Hours or 2 Days & 19 Minutes.
Q15) What was Hurricane Mitchs maximum wind speed during this
period? 155 mph
Task 5: Measure the size of the storm

Q16) What was the very largest diameter of the eye of Hurricane Mitch?
40.1 miles
Q17) What was the very largest diameter of Hurricane Mitch? 717.9
miles
Q18) What changes in size, location, and cloud cover did you see in the
storm as it made landfall? In size, from measuring the picture
satellite diagrams it went from huge to small. As to in
movement it moved in an upside down U shape, it went up
north then turn southwest then came down south. The
clouds at first were very clear to see then as it came to

Module 7, Lesson 2: Answer sheet

Category 5 and was now hovering over land, it was hard to

see the eye of the hurricane.
Task 6: Analyze rainfall from Hurricane Mitch

Q19) What pattern do you notice in the amount of rainfall?

I noticed that in the middle there is only a little spot of the
hurricane in the eye area that rains hard but on the rest of
the hurricane it rains super hard. Then there are little areas
on land it has a bit of different types of rainfall.
Q20) Is this a pattern you expected to find? Why or why not?
Yes, I did expected to find the middle part of the hurricane
be a certain speed then have the rest of the hurricane be at
another speed, because I remember learning this in class.
Q21) What is the highest range of rainfall in the Rain4 layer?
Rainfall from 0-6 & Count of 11,710
Q22) Which country received the majority of this heavy rain?
Honduras
Q23) Describe the difference between the rainfall patterns on October 30
(Rain4 layer) and October 31 (Rain5 layer).
In the Rain 4 layer, there is a lot more harder rain and in
Nicaragua and El Salvador, there is less hard rainfall. The
hurricane touches most of El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras,
Belize and barely some on Guatemala, Costa Rica and
Panama. As to Rain layer 5, it moves over to mostly El
Salvador where there is still that soft rain and has much
harder rain surrounding it in Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama
and some in Guatemala.
Q24) Estimated Damage Assessment: Look over the data you have
collected and assess where you think most of the damage occurred
in Central America during Hurricane Mitch. What kind of damage do
you expect to find with this type of storm? What regions will be
most affected? What aspects of the region (industrialization, land
use, transportation, etc.) will be most affected? Use the table in Q1
as a resource.

Module 7, Lesson 2: Answer sheet

Based on the data notes that I have collected, most of the

damage in Central America during Hurricane Mitch affected
Honduras the most part. From seeing that there are a lot of
Roads, and the population is huge. I expect there to be a lot of
flooding, having people loosing homes and struggling with
repairing buildings due to the fact that Honduras isnt a super
wealthy country. Their railroads will probably rust with the water
and causing landslides maybe ruining roads since there Is a lot of
non-irrigated land they live on and could loose their food since
they have mostly croplands as well.
