Colorado Career Cluster Model
Students have previously completed the Self

This unit is extremely beneficial for students
because it helps them engage in career

portfolio for when they will enter the
workforce.

What programs, education, and opportunities come from each of the six clusters?

Evidence Outcomes:
After completing the Colorado Career Cluster survey, I can make an informed and
knowledgeable decision about which Career Cluster is the best fit for me.
This means: I have identified and explored 3 different Career Clusters and decided
on my top 1.

Learn About Yourself

Students will take the Colorado Career Cluster Survey to find a career
cluster that is best suited to them. This is useful because it will help
students decide on a career to research for the entirety of this unit.
90 minutes
I will need:
Projector- Scattergories Category List & Colorado Career Cluster
PowerPoint
Scattergories handouts for each student
Scattergories sample answer sheet
Students will need:
Pens/pencils
Individual laptops
Student Warm Ups are posted on the Projector
Today there will be the following quote: Choose a job you love, and you
will never have to work a day in your life, -Confucius.
Students then have to reflect on the quote, AKA why is it important to
love your job?
Cold call 2-3 students to share out.

How do you intend to engage your

students in thinking during the
Anticipatory Set?
Why are you using it at this point in
your lesson?

Procedures

10 minutes to complete
The strategy I intend to use is a daily warm-up/ Question or thought of
the day and Cold Call
I am using this strategy here because it engages students into the
classroom right away and gives them a brief idea of what the lesson will
be covering in class today. Using a cold call technique will hold every
student accountable; as they will all have something for their warm up
in case they are called on to share.
Scattergories: 20 minutes
Teaching Method: Game

1. After the warm up students will close and put away their laptops.
2. I will pass out their Scattergories scorecard and review the rules
of the game. Everyone get with a partner at your table for the
two rounds of Scattergories that we will play. I will pass out a
scorecard to each pair. We begin the rounds by rolling a letter
dice, the letter that it lands on is the letter that you will create
answers from for each category that starts with that letter.
Record your answers on the scorecard. Each round will go for 2
minutes. We will then go around the room and read aloud the
answers. Any duplicate answers will be crossed out and not
counted. Players score one point for each answer not crossed
out. The pair with the highest score wins the game.
3. We will play two rounds of Scattergories, each round lasting for 2
minutes. Act as a facilitator walk around during gameplay /
Do not probe students for answers so it is obvious what
their prior knowledge is on the content.
4. Students will be instructed to turn in their completed scorecards
so that I can gage their current knowledge of the subject and see
areas of strength and areas of improvement.
Colorado Career Clusters PowerPoint Teaching: 50 min.
Method: Guided Practice
1. SLIDE 1 (Picture of Model): As you can see the Colorado Career
Cluster Model has 6 different career clusters. A career cluster is a
grouping of occupations and industries. Within each career
cluster is a career pathway. A career pathway represents a
grouping of occupations within a cluster that share a base level
of common knowledge and skill.
2. SLIDE 2 (CollegeInColorado.org): Now everyone get out your
laptops and go to the following website and we are now going to
complete the Colorado Career Cluster Survey to see which career
cluster we best fit into. Walk students through survey
process- Whole-class practice/ assist students as they are
answering the survey (Survey takes 15-20 min.)
3. SLIDE 3 (Answer questions) When everyone has completed the
survey, instruct the students to open a separate word document
and answer the questions on this slide for their top THREE

Career Clusters. Walk students through career selection

process- Whole-class practice/ walk around and assist
students and check for understanding
4. SLIDE 4 (Example to answer questions): If needed, this slide is
available for students if they need an example on how to answer
the questions.
5. You will need to save your answers to these questions and turn
them into me at a later time, with the large assignment we are
completing this unit.
Introduce Career Investigation/Portfolio Assignment: 10 min.
1. Pass out the assignment descriptions and rubrics. This
assignment is a major part of your grade and will be what we are
working on for the rest of the unit. Now that we all selected a
career we can begin the assignment. We will be creating a Career
Investigation E-Portfolio online. You are expected to research a
career, participate in a job shadow, create career-related
documents, participate in a mock interview, set career goals and
create a plan for achieving those goals. This assignment
directions handout goes into details for what is expected in each
section of the portfolio.
2. Go over the assignment recommended due dates and
expectations. Important days to write down right now. Days 4
and 7 are free for you to go job shadow and/or come into class
and work on the assignment. Day 5 we will be doing mock
interviews, dress professional this day. The entire assignment is
due on Day 8.
3. Go over rubrics.
The strategy I intend to use is a game and guided practice
I am using this strategy here because a game is a great way to engage
all students and have them be excited about the lesson, I am using a
game here as a pre assessment tool to gage prior knowledge and areas
of weakness and strength. The guided practice strategy helps students
follow along and complete sequential steps to achieve the desired
outcomecareer decision process.

How do you intend to engage your
students in thinking during
CLOSURE?
Why are you using it at this point in
your lesson?

Differentiation:

Assessment Reflection: (data

analysis)

As students are lining up and leaving the classroom they need to share
with me which career they have decided to investigate for the
assignment.
The strategy I intend to use is Whisper out the Door
I am using this strategy here because it is similar to a ticket out the
door, but with the little time we have left, it is easier for the students to
just tell me on their way out the door which career they have chosen.
The verbal affirmation also helps students commit to one career that
they will then investigate for the rest of the unit.
Since this class is time-sensitive with the Colorado Career Clustery
Survey and decision process, it is important to take into account my
students who need extra help in reading and writing.
For my students who need extra time, print copies of the PowerPoint
slides and allow students to take home with them and complete the
survey and decision process as homework OR
Give them the chance to come in during free periods or lunch and
complete the survey and decision process with me.
The outcome I want for this lesson is for students to complete the
survey and the decision making process and be able to decide on the
career they want to investigate. In order to know if my students met the
learning targets, their career decision process answers is the
assessment, but the immediate assessment is the Whisper out the
Door will let me know if each of my students has decided on a career
or not.
The pre assessment for this unit is the students answers on their
Scattergories scorecards.
- What is their prior knowledge?
- What are areas of strength?
- What are areas of weakness?
