ABOUT THE CENTRE

Anna University (AU) was established on 4th
September 1978 as a unitary type of University to
promote teaching and research in the field of
Engineering, Technology, Architecture and Applied
Sciences. True to its image as a premier technical
institution in the country, AU constantly strives for
excellence in education, research and societal service
through highly dedicated and competent faculty
members who are also expert researchers in various
emerging and cutting edge technologies.
Crystal Growth Centre is an internationally
acclaimed centre of excellence in the field of crystal
growth research and technology since 1982. The centre
is also a UGC national facility. It has grown several
crystals covering a broad range of characteristics and
thereby provides a platform to discuss the latest
developments in the field of crystal growth research
and state of art analytical equipments.

Scope of the programme

The knowledge of materials characterization

allows researchers not only to select the best material
as a function of its application in a given product, but
also to overcome constraints in a design path where
materials and transformation technologies become
variables of the creation process. In order to create
awareness in usage and knowledge of analytical
equipment and to use the equipment in the most
appropriate way, a thorough knowledge of equipment
is very much essential. In the short term course due
coverage will be given for characterization, testing and
application of analytical equipment (HRXRD, XRD, SEM,
TEM, AFM, FTIR, PL, DLS, DRS, RAMAN, XPS).

Date: 09 and 10 January 2017

Last date to receive the registration form: 31/12/2016
Intimation of acceptance: 03/01/2017
Hospitality:
Refreshments/ Lunch/ snacks will be provided for all
the participants.
Distribution of % of participants:
As per the guidelines participants are admitted to the
short term course as follows: OC 77.5 %, SC 15% and ST
7.5 %. Numbers of participants are restricted up to 100.

What you can expect from the short term course?

After attending the two day short term course, the
participants are expected to have an in depth
knowledge of the material characterization and
analytical equipments. From XRD techniques they can
learn standard phase analysis and phase identification
of samples.
HRXRD will be discussed to
understand the quality of thin film samples and
evaluate the strain using Reciprocal Lattice Mapping.
Demonstration on different characterization techniques
will be given to the participants.
Theoretical simulation tools will be explained which
will enhance the knowledge of participants in
theoretical analysis.

ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

Morphological studies using Scanning Electron
Microscopy, Atomic Force Spectroscopy (AFM), and
Transmission Electron Microscopy will be discussed in
detail. AFM helps us to study surface features of
nanometer dimensions which can be observed under
simple sample preparation procedures. Magnetic force
spectroscopy will also be introduced. Elemental
analysis
using
Energy
Dispersive
Absorption
Spectroscopy will also be discussed. Equipment related
to Photoluminescence, Diffuse reflectance spectra will
give information on the emission spectrum, defect
analysis and band gap of the materials.
Equipment like Dynamic light scattering can measure
the particle size and size distribution of particles in
emulsions and molecules dispersed or dissolved in
liquid. It is also helpful in determining the molecular
weight of the protein and zeta potential of the colloidal
suspensions.

Who can attend ?

Final year students, all research scholars at PG and
Ph.D. levels, faculty members who are interested in
pursuing research in the area of materials and
personnel from industry can attend.
NOTE:

Numbers of participants are restricted up to 100.

There will be no registration fee to attend the
program.
No accommodation will be provided and
participants have to make their own
arrangements to stay at Chennai for attending
the program.
No TA will be given for the travelling expenses.
