FOREWORD
Our earliest Ewing ancestor to come to America was William Ewing in about 1718. He landed in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, coming from Scotland and later settled in Rockingham County, Virginia,
in 1742. Presley Kittredge Ewing wrote his book. The Ewing Genealogy with Cognate Branches,
in 1919 on the history of the early ancestors. Also Elbert William R. Ewing wrote a book in 1922
which contains the early history of this Ewing family. But as is usually the case, there are members
of the family that for various reasons were not included in their books. This is what happened to
Edley Ewing, who was a son of Andrew Ewing of Nashville, Tennessee. Edley is not mentioned in
any known family history. It is our purpose to list this great family of Edley Ewing and put it in its
proper place as descendants of William Ewing.
We have found that many records were destroyed during the Civil War (1861-1865) which made
our information limited. It is said no genealogy has ever been written that was free of error, and that
likely applies to this one. Every effort was made to record names and dates as they were submitted
to me. There are names and dates not contained in this outline due to the fact some descendants
failed to pass on their family data to be entered along with the others. We regret we were not able to
include every member of these descendants.
My sources of information have been obtained from Census records of Tennessee, Alabama,
Mississippi and Texas, from court records, wills, probate proceedings, family Bibles, tombstones and
old letters, and some help from a professional genealogist in Nashville. Tennessee.
My sincere thanks go to those who have helped me gather information concerning their family.
They are too numerous to mention. My thanks also goes to my two sons, William Myrl Ewing and
Thomas Neal Ewing, for their help in gathering data and Xeroxing, and to my wife, Catherine, for
her patience.
I have enjoyed the work of putting this all together. The task has been performed because of my
desire to learn more of our pioneer ancestors and their descendants. I have met many Ewing I had
not known before. As Guy Marshall Ewing of Georgetown, Texas stated I have never heard of a
Ewing connection that was not a good, honorable and straight forward person, and I am proud to
carry the name.

FORWARD TO 2016 REPRINT

After beginning follow-up research into my familys genealogy, I soon realized that a searchable
copy of my grandfathers 1979 Ewing family genealogy would be a great help to my work. My father,
my mother, my daughter, and I have all recently had our DNA sequenced. These tests have opened
up the possibility of confirming our existing genealogy and extending it. We have, for example,
already determined a genetic link to Wilson Edley Ewing through our cousin Dr. Robert Terrell
Perry, Jr., whose great-grandmother Hettie Amanda Ewing Perry was the sister of Wilson Edley
Ewing. We have also determined a genetic link to Wilson Edleys wife Hannah Despain through our
cousin Kim Birnbaum whose great-grandfather was John Despain, a brother of Hannah Despain.
These two connections verify a portion of our family genealogy back to 1800.
In reviewing my grandfathers genealogy text, I noticed that huge sections of the family were not
explored. This oversight is understandable given the number ancestors that one has. For example,
grandfathers paternal line has been traced back to a William Ewing from Scotland born in early to
mid-1600s. Similarly, grandfathers maternal genealogy of the Lindley family traces back to John
Lindley, born in 1611 in England. For my grandfather, the early 1600s 9 generations of his
ancestors - comprises 512 ancestors at the same level of parentage. Of these 512 ancestors, we
presently know three names John Lindley, William Ewing, and Eliza Milford. John Lindleys wife
is identified only as Alice with no maiden name given. The other 508 names are not known. In my
case, 11 generations will need to be accounted for if I want to trace my ancestry back to the mid1600s, which amounts to 2,048 ancestors (211) at the same level of parentage, and for my daughter
Audrey 4,096 (212) ancestors at the same level of parentage.
The resources available for genealogical research have greatly improved since my grandfather
wrote this book 37 years ago. Grandfather did much of his research through the mail, the telephone,
and some occasional trips to the library and a few professional resources. I am certain that the
names for many of the missing ancestors can be filled in quickly using on-line database tools, for
example. I would also like to check the spellings for the names and locations for various ancestors. I
have made only a few corrections here, based on seeing an obvious typographical error.
In this electronic copy, I have kept the page numbering identical to the original version. This has
been more difficult than one would imagine because my grandfather seems to have adjusted the
spacing on his typewriter from page to page. Thus, for some pages, I have needed to make some
unique adjustments.
The text of the original version of the book has been determined using optical character
recognition (OCR) technology. I have attempted to catch machine errors, but have possibly missed a
few of them. Particular letters and combinations of letters were misrecognized so often that I
eventually constructed various search and replace commands that corrected huge numbers of errors.
However, some mistakes likely still remain.
My ultimate goal is to produce an updated and expanded version of this family genealogy.
Producing a searchable version of the original text seemed to be a useful first step. Of course, I am
infinitely grateful for the diligent effort that my grandfather put into writing this text, and I am
always pleased when I see a reference to grandfathers book on-line from a distant relative.

WILLIAM EWING, the Emigrant

WILLIAM EWING was born about 1694 in Tillichewan Castle, two miles from Lock
Lomond and ten miles from Glasgow, Scotland, the son of William Ewing and Eliza
Milford. In the year 1718 (a traditional date) on a country estate near Glasgow, the father
advised the son what he should do with his life. "My lad, your oldest brother inherits the
estate and the title. Go to America and seek an honest fortune in the opportunities of a new
country. Aye, remember, lad, you are a son of a worthy Scotch baron. That son was our
ancestor William Ewing, the Emigrant, who established our branch of the family in Augusta
County, Virginia (known today as Rockingham County, Virginia). Following his fathers
advice, young William, very reluctantly, started for the new world pausing briefly with
relatives in Ulster, Ireland. Ulster, Londonderry was an important port to America. The
crossing was made with three kinsmen, probably brothers or cousins. After a stormy voyage
William first located in Burks County, Pennsylvania, where he acquired property in
Philadelphia. He went to school in Philadelphia for three years and married his teacher,
Anne (or Anna) Shannon, in 1733, who was also of Scotch-Irish decent. She was the
dominant spirit, but they were a happy couple.
In 1742 the family, which now included three small boys, moved to Virginia and
acquired lands along the Upper Shenandoah River in what is now Rockingham County.
They settled some three miles northwest of where Harrisonburg now stands. This part of
Virginia was an unknown wilderness when the Ewings arrived and subject to deadly attacks
by Indians. Their first home was built of large logs and resembled an outpost blockhouse
which was besieged more than once. The entire Valley region was plagued by the savages
for perhaps the next forty years. When the Indians

began to retreat, William built a brick, colonial mansion, with big dormer windows and a
large porch with lofty columns. Here this old pioneer died in 1796.
Anne died in 1801, at the age of 90. She and William are buried in the yard of the New
Erection Presbyterian Church in the Valley of the Shenandoah, near their old home.
The children of William and Anne Ewing were:
1. Henry, 1736-1796.

ANDREW EWING
ANDREW EWING, the second child of William Ewing and Anne/a Shannon was
born March 15, 1740 in the State of Pennsylvania. He married Susannah Shannon, daughter
of Thomas Shannon of Virginia. Susannah was born December 26, 1737. They established
their home in what is now Nashville, Tennessee, in 1780. Andrew was a Quaker by birth
and did not perform any Military service. On May 13, 1780 he signed the Cumberland
Compact and was elected one of the twelve Notables, in 1780, to govern the Cumberland
Settlements; served as Clerk of the Government of Notables, 1780-1783; elected first Clerk
of Davidson County Court, 1783. He held the position until his death April 3, 1813.
Andrew and Susannah Ewing are believed to have had nine children according to the
Perkins Manuscript written in 191) by Teresa Ewing Perkins, a descendant of William
Ewing. We have found the names of only seven, viz.
Andrew, 1768-1830.

Elizabeth, 1779- ?
A genealogy of The McGavock Family written in 1903 included the following statement
about the deaths of Andrew and Nathan. A remarkable occurrence took place at the
deaths of the brothers Andrew and Nathan Ewing, which occurred 1 May, 1830. A few
moments before Andrew died he said: I see that Nathan has gone before me. In a few
hours a messenger from Nashville arrived in Franklin, Tenn., announcing the death of
Nathan, of whose illness Andrew knew nothing. They died in a few moments of each
other. They were buried in the same grave.
The genealogy of Andrew's Family is well written in the book, "The Ewing Genealogy
with Cognate Branches" by Presley K. Ewing and his wife Mary Ellen (Williams) Ewing,
copyrighted in 1919. They have, however included only six children of

Andrew and Susannah, omitting Edley. When we first begin researching this family in 1970
we were not able to find the parentage of Edley, but since have determined he is a son of
Andrew and Susannah Ewing. Traditionally he lived in their home as a child, scribbling his
name on the record books in the Clerk of Court's office along with the names of some of
the other known children of Clerk Andrew.
On June 18, 1794, Edley Ewing was deeded 320 acres of land by Andrew Casselman, a
son-in-law of Andrew Ewing. This deed had a provision that should Edley die during his
minority, or after he became of full age, without issue, the land would become the property
of Nathan Ewing. That portion of the deed reads as follows : **** That is to say that if the
said Edley Ewing should chance to die in his minority or after he shall have come to full
age shall die without issue being seized by said land, that is not disposed of the same to any
other person, then and in that case the said lands above described shall become the right
and Property of Nathan Ewing and his heirs 'and assigns forever, with the same force value
and right as if the same had been granted to him in the first instance by the above
indenture. ****. Signed Andrew Casselman, L. S. and witnessed by Andrew Ewing.
Edley Ewing married Elizabeth Love in 1798/9. Andrew Ewing deeded him a tract of
land July 7, 1799 taken from the 640 acre tract granted to him by the State of North
Carolina. The deed of conveyance describes Edley as, "being the same who married
Elizabeth Love, daughter of Joseph Love. The deed is written in the same language as one
given to William Ewing, son of Andrew, on January 2, 1797, soon after he married Margaret
Love, daughter of Joseph Love, and one given to Moses Speers, soon after he married
Amelia Ewing. Andrew Ewing deeded the remainder of the 640 acre tract to William
Ramsey on July 15, 1805, the same date Edley Ewing deeded his tract to William Ramsey.
These deeds were witnessed by Nathan Ewing.
Andrew Ewing willed a child's share of his estate to William Ewing, Wilson Edley
Ewing and Andrew B. Ewing, sons of Edley Ewing, the will being as follows:
"State of Tennessee Davidson County.
In the name of God, Amen. I Andrew Ewing being in sound

mind and disposing memory, but conscious of the uncertainty of life do hereby make and
ordain this my last will and testament.
First. After payment of all my just debts and funeral expenses I give devise and bequeath to
my dear wife Susanna all my personal estate forever, and the use of my real estate during
her life time.
Second. After my wifes decease I devise and bequeath to my son Nathan Ewing and his
heirs the house and lot in the Town of Nashville whereon I now live, provided the said
Nathan or his representatives shall within four years after my said wife's decease pay to my
son Andrew or his representatives two hundred and fifty dollars, to my son William Ewing
or his representatives two hundred fifty dollars, to Margaret wife of Andrew Casselman or
her representatives, two hundred and fifty dollars, to my daughter Amelia wife of Moses
Speers or her representatives, two hundred and fifty dollars, to my daughter Elizabeth, wife
of Thomas Shannon or her representatives two hundred and fifty dollars, to William Ewing,
Wilson Edley Ewing & Andrew B. Ewing, sons of Edley Ewing or the survivors of them or
their guardian two hundred and fifty dollars, and to Andrew Montgomery and Edley
Montgomery, sons of William Montgomery or the survivors of them or their guardian two
hundred and fifty dollars : But if the said Nathan Ewing or his representatives shall fail to
pay said several sums within said period of four years my will is that said house and lot be
sold by my executors or the survivors of them as their legal representatives, and that from
the proceeds of the sale said several sums or a proportionate part thereof be paid, and the
surplus if any be paid to the said Nathan Ewing or his representatives.
Third. As it will be very troublesome and perhaps useless I do not wish that my executors
shall make a return and Inventory of old desperate debts, nor of the clerks fees due me, it
being however understood that they are to complete the collections as far as practicable and
account for all sums to be received.
Fourth. I nominate and appoint my sons Nathan Ewing and

William Ewing Executors of this will. In witness whereof I have hereto subscribed my
name and affixed my seal this twenty third day of December 1812.

Since the two sons of William Montgomery had family names of Andrew and Edley, we
believe he may have married a daughter of Andrew Ewing, however we have not found any
record of them in our research.
We have found numerous legal records and instruments in Davidson and Williamson
Counties, Tennessee, where Edley Ewings name is listed as a witness or principal along
with those of Andrew Ewing and his sons William and Nathan. This leads us to believe
they were all closely related. Andrew and Susannah Ewing were buried in the Ewing family
graveyard, later known as Noel place. Their sons Andrew and Nathan were also buried
there. Their monuments were moved to City Cemetery in Nashville in the late 1920s. The
inscription on Andrew's stone states, "Andrew Ewing, born in the State of Pennsylvania,
March 17, 1740. Educated in the Quaker Persuasion. Of the mild and benignant principals
of that sect, he was the brightest ornament, Died May 1, 1813. Proverbially good, honest
and charitable. Lived . With All. First Clerk of Davidson County, Oct. 1783 until 1813.
Susannah lies by his side, born in Philadelphia on 25 Dec. 1738, died 31 Oct. 1818.

Up until now Edley Ewing has been totally left out of genealogy records of the Ewing
Clan. Two books on the family have been written. "The Ewing Genealogy with Cognate
Branches, by Presley K. Ewing and Mary Ellen (Williams) Ewing, and "Clan Ewing of
Scotland, by Elbert William R. Ewing , and other reports on individual lines reported, but
not a single reference to the name Edley Ewing . We have searched many records for a
reference to his parents but never found where he is referred to as a son, however many
things indicate he was a son of Andrew Ewing and Susannah Shannon of Nashville,
Tennessee. We find him in their home at an early age having a close relationship with their
other known children. Other reasons for this belief have been stated in our discussion of
Andrew Ewing and will not be repeated here. His children and grandchildren have
continued to use the family names of Andrews children. So, after five years of studying
court house and archive records, as well as extensive traveling and correspondence with
Edleys descendants, we have concluded that he was, in fact a son of Andrew and Susannah
Ewing. Our proof has been accepted by the Sons of the American Revolution under
National Number 106414.
Edley Ewing was born in 1778 in Rockingham County, Virginia, moved to Nashville,
Tennessee in 1780 with his parents, where he grew into manhood. He married Elizabeth
Love during 1798, probably in Nashville. She was born in 1782 in Augusta County,
Virginia, a daughter of Joseph Love, Jr., and Mary Marshall. They established their home on
the Granny White Pike, near the border of Davidson and Williamson Counties, where the
children listed below were born:
William in 1799.

James in 1812.
The only information we have found about Dr. Andrew B. Ewing, was the reference to
him in his grandfather's will, and that he visited in the home of Amanda Melvina after she
moved to San Augustine, Texas. We find Henry and James listed in an Archive Record filed
in the Genealogical Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints in Salt
Lake City, Utah, by Amy Jones Doyle of Salt Lake City, Utah, who claimed to be a fourth
cousin. These three children were not living with Edley and Elizabeth when the first census
of Texas was taken in 1836. Neither did they sign a release with the other known heirs to
Elizabeth (Ardrey) Ewing, widow of Edley, assigning to her all their right, title, claim and
interest to the 600 acre homestead, etc., near San Augustine Texas, after the death of Edley
Ewing. It is presumed they were deceased before the death of their father and were without
issue.
Edley Ewing bought and sold several tracts of land in Davidson and Williamson
Counties, Tennessee, as late as 1811. He was a Private in Captain Philip Pipkins Company
of Mounted Riflemen, Col. N. T. Perkins Regiment of Tennessee Mounted Militia, War of
1812. He served from December 19, 1813 to February 8, 1814, traveled 180 miles
marching to Huntsville, place of rendezvous, and from Fayetteville, place of muster out,
from and to Nashville. Traditionally he also fought in the Indian Wars of Tennessee.
We next find him living in Franklin County, Alabama, in 1820 with two males over
twenty and one under twenty, two females under twenty, and seven slaves. The two females
were probably Elizabeth and Amanda Melvina. Later we find the family in Madison
County, Tennessee, during the middle 1820s. Edley, William and Wilson Edley are
mentioned doing road work and serving on Grand and Petit Juries. Dr. William Ewing also
filed claims with the County for services rendered as a doctor. Edley was next found in
Madison County, Mississippi in 1830, living near his nephew Dr. Milton P. Ewing, son of
William and Margaret Ewing.

It is not known what route they followed in their migration to Texas. It is believed the
group consisted of Ewings. Hails. Loves and probably others. They settled in San Augustine
County, Texas, during 1835 having been granted leagues of land by the Mexican
government. Edley's land was sold by his heirs after his death. Elizabeth early associated
herself with the Presbyterian Church in San Augustine and was a charter member of the
Memorial Presbyterian Church organized by the Reverend Hugh Wilson. D. D., June 2,
1838, the first Presbyterian Church organized in Texas. The minutes of this early church
reflect she died during the year 1841.
Their home was located on a 640 acre tract of land four miles North of San Augustine.
The first census of Texas in 1836 shows them to be living in the San Augustine District
with a granddaughter named Mary Amanda, seven years of age. Our research has not
established the parents of this child. She married Hiram Aliff Willson, at San Augustine,
October 18. 1844. Edley gave them a deed of gift of his seven slaves on February 5. 1845.
Edley married secondly Mrs. Elizabeth Ardrey, August 23. 1845, .at San Augustine,
Texas. There were no children born to them. Edley gave her a deed of gift to the
homestead together with his live stock on December 5. 1846. Deeds of record in San
Augustine County indicate he, died between the dates of January 14. 1847 and February 14.
1848.
We have not located the graves of Edley and Elizabeth Love Ewing, but it is believed
they were buried in the corner of their homestead or in the San Augustine Cemetery
without a marker.

Doctor WILLIAM EWING

Doctor WILLIAM EWING, the first child of Edley Ewing and Elizabeth Love was
born in 1799 in Davidson County, Tennessee. He died about 1890 in Carrollton,
Mississippi, where he practiced medicine most of his life. He married Frances Murden
Tarver about 1826, she was a half-sister of Jonas Judd Hail. She was born in North Carolina
in 1808 and died after 1880, at Carrollton, Mississippi. Doctor William moved to Madison
County, Tennessee before 1825 where we find he filed claims with the County Court for
medical services. The 1830 census of Madison County shows he lived near his brother
Wilson Edley Ewing. He was granted a league of land in Texas but we do not find any
record of his living there. He located in Carrollton, Carroll County, Mississippi about 1840,
and practiced medicine there until his death. He and daughter Elizabeth bought and sold
several tracts of land in Carroll County as late as 1890. Our research has not located any of
his descendants but some of them were living in Carroll County in the early 1900s. A
granddaughter Mrs. William Johnson Massey lived in Houston, Texas several years ago but
we have not been able to locate the family. The 1850 census of Carroll County, Mississippi,
lists the following children.

WILSON EDLEY EWING

WILSON EDLEY EWING, the second child of Edley Ewing and Elizabeth Love was
born August 2, 1800 in Davidson County. Tennessee, and died April 18, 1869, at Tarrant.
Texas. He married Hannah Despain, daughter of Marshall Despain and Rachel Lynn.
Rachel was the daughter of Benjamin Lynn, the famous Indian Fighter-Hunter-ScoutPreacher, the Daniel Boone of Northern Kentucky. Benjamin Lynn p1ayed a noteworthy
part in the early history of Kentucky. Hannah was born November 19, 1802 in Greene
County. Kentucky, and died January 28, 1865 in Hopkins County, Texas. Both are buried in
the Old Tarrant Cemetery, four miles north of Sulphur Springs. Texas.
The Despain family from which Hannah descended comes from the French Huguenots
and maintained many of the early beliefs of this Protestant group, and simple New
Testament Christianity. Some members of the family were active in the Restoration
movement. A great number were preachers and educators.
Esther (Hetty) Despain; sister of Hannah married Joseph Addison Clark at San
Augustine, Texas. January 21, 1842. Their sons Addison and Randolph were the owners of
a Christian College at Thorp Spring. Texas, that later become Texas Christian University at
Fort Worth, Texas.
Randolph Despain was killed in the massacre at Goliad, Texas, March 27. 1836. Other
brothers were preachers, teachers and farmers.
Wilson Edley and Hannah Despain Ewing first lived in Lawrence County, Alabama,
moved to Madison County, Tennessee, before 1825. They moved to San Augustine County.
Texas during 1835, he having been granted a league of land in East Texas by the Mexican
government in the David G. Burnet Colony, October 29, 1835. He was also granted Bounty
land in Nacogdoches County, Texas. November 4. 1837, for voluntary service in a militia
company. The company was organized in San Augustine County after a threat of another
invasion of Texas on a grand scale

by Mexican General Urrea during the summer of 1836. Jonas J. Hail (brother-in-law) and
James Love (uncle) were in the same company. The Nacogdoches County deed record
reflects he donated land for a town in 1837. The Indians were causing trouble in East Texas
during the 1840s and he sold his land in Nacogdoches and Titus Counties before 1850 and
was in Hopkins County with his family in 1850. They settled on a 600 acre farm just north
of South Sulphur River, a few miles south of what is now Cooper in the Liberty Grove
community. Their children were.

We have contacted descendants of ten of these children, they have been helpful in
furnishing information, however we have learned little about some of the families. Some
descendants failed or refused to answer our inquiries and their family listings are not
complete.
On the following pages are the listings of the descendants of each child of Wilson
Edley and Hannah Ewing as we have learned about them.

WILLIAM MARSHALL EWING

(1) WILLIAM MARSHALL EWING, the first child of Wilson Edley Ewing and Hannah
Despain , was born April II , 1820 in Lawrence County, Alabama , died May 17, 1874 at
Sulphur Springs , Texas, and is buried in the City Cemetery . He married Viola Oliva
Alexander, January 20, 1842 in San Augustine, Texas. She was born in 1825 in Tennessee,

(2) DORINDA EWING, born June 9, 1821 in Lawrence County. Alabama, died September
23, 1883, at Cooper, Texas. She married Thaddeus Constantine McCaleb, son of Samuel
and Sarah McCaleb. He was born June 25, 1812 in Clairborne County, Mississippi and died
October 1, 1853 in West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. She was the second child of Wilson
Edley Ewing and Hannah Despain and moved with the family to San Augustine County,
Texas in 1835. She attended school at Jackson Acadamy, Jackson, Louisiana and probably
met Thaddeus there. They were listed in the 1850 Census of West Feliciana Parish,
Louisiana. They owned a plantation and several slaves and lived about nine miles from the
town of Bayou Sara, Louisiana, near the upper Jackson Road. After Thaddeus died Dorinda
sold her plantation and slaves and moved to Tarrant, Hopkins County, Texas, with two of
her children, Catherine Elizabeth and William Alfred. As a child, she remembered sitting at
her mother's feet at church meetings when Church of Christ-Christian Church was being
restored. She also wrote articles for the Atlantic Constitution in Georgia. She married
second Isham Enloe Mc Intyre, a carpenter, November 21, 1855 in Hopkins County, Texas.
She and Mr. McIntyre are buried in the Old Union Cemetery at the Gough Community
near Klondike, Delta County, Texas.

Parish, Louisiana and in the Inventory and Appraisement of his fathers estate, dated

2. Catherine Elizabeth McCaleb, born August 1, 1844 at Bayou Sara, Louisiana, and died
August 21, 1926, at Sulphur Springs, Texas. She attended a girls school in Louisiana and
ran away and married John Alexander Pierce, son of Franklin Pierce, June 9, 1859. He
was born September 17, 1832 in Kentucky and died March 12, 1891 in Sulphur Springs,
Texas. Both are buried in the Oddfellows Cemetery at Sulphur Springs, Texas. During
the Civil War Mr. Pierce was a millwright and ground corn for the soldiers. They moved
to Sulphur Springs, Texas in 1861, she brought her money from Louisiana and put it in a
Texas bank. The bank later went broke and they gave her 1600 acres of land valued at 25
and 35 cents per acre. Near the end of the

War she knew that her Confederate money would be worthless so when a man came by
selling salt, sugar and syrup, she bargained with him to sell her a barrel each of salt, sugar
and syrup for what he originally told her she could buy the salt for. She was a member of
the Christian Church. In her later years her eyesight failed and she used a cane to get
around and lived with her daughter, Susia McClimons.

(3) JOHN MARION EWING, the third child of Wilson Edley Ewing and Hannah
Despain, born March 6, 182J in Lawrence County, Alabama, died January 14, 1888, at
Addran, Hopkins County, Texas. He married Sarah (Sallie) E. Strother, daughter of William
Strother and Dicy Crutchfield, in ' Hopkins County, Texas. August 14, 1856. She was born
September 10, 18J7 in Smith County, Tennessee, died November 25, 1880; at Addran,
Texas. He moved to San Augustine County, Texas, with his parents in 18J5, and to
Hopkins County, Texas, before 1850. He and brother William Marshall Ewing were
engaged in the Mercantile Business at Tarrant, Texas, from 1856 to 1862. When Texas
seceded from the Union he joined the Confederate Army and was mustered into Captain
Joseph A. Moores Company, Precinct 6, Hopkins County, Texas, August 6, 1861. for
active service. He was stationed at Camp Caren Crow, Louisiana, during most of his service.
When he returned from the army' he, engaged in stock raising and farming, was elected a,
County Commissioner on June 25, 1866. He was a Master Mason and member of Tarrant
Lodge No. 91. Both are buried in the Aiguier Cemetery a few miles north of Sulphur
Springs, Texas.

(4) ELIZABETH R. EWING, the fourth child of Wilson Edley Ewing and Hannah
Despain, was born November 19, 1825, in Madison County, Tennessee, died May 27, 1872,
at Cooper, Texas. She came to Texas with her parents in 1835, lived in Titus County until
1850, Married Alfonso Crowder and they settled in Hopkins County, Texas, he died during
the early 1850s. She married 2nd Volney Constantine Rattan. He was born March 3, 1835 in
Green County, Illinois, came to Texas with his parents Hiram and Leah Shull Rattan in
1838. They settled near where Paris is located. The family moved to what is now Delta
County in 1870. He was one of the organizers of Delta 'County and did much to aid its
development, a prominent stock raiser and farmer. He was an enthusiastic Free Mason.

was born in 1828 in Madison County, Tennessee. He was living with his brother William
Marshall Ewing in Titus County, Texas in 1850, was also listed with the family of his
parents in Hopkins County, Texas, in the 1850 Census. He must have died before 1872 as
he did not participate in the distribution of his father's estate.

(7) JAMES WILSON EWING, the seventh child of Wilson Edley Ewing and Hannah
Despain was born April 4, 1830 in Memphis, Tennessee, died in 1885 at Palestine, Texas.
Married Eliza J. Rogers, daughter of W. R. and Joicey Hanks Rogers, at Palestine, Texas, in
1854. She was born in Mississippi, came to Texas with her parents in 1846. He was Senior
Editor of the Palestine Advocate, having learned the printers trade from his Uncle Joseph
Addison Clark at Bonham, Texas, publisher of the Cherokee Sentinel. He went with Mr.
Clark to Palestine in 1849 where he started, the first newspaper in Anderson County. James
took the paper over in 1851 and continued with its publication, excepting a few years spent
in the war, until his death. He enlisted in the Confederate Army in March 1862, served
three years. He became a first lieutenant under Captain B. F. Park and operated in Louisiana
and Arkansas, was wounded in the battle of Mansfield where he was shot through the
ankle. This injury rendered him unfit for further service in the war. He belonged to the
Masonic Lodge and the I. O. O. F. at Palestine, being Past Senior Warden of the former
and having held all the chairs in the latter.

(9) EMILY PECUNE EWING, the ninth child of Wilson Edley Ewing and Hannah
Despain, was born November 20, 1833 in Madison County, Tennessee, died February 18,
1908 in Amarillo, Texas. Married Charles Sinclair Nidever, January 1, 1857 in Hopkins
County, Texas. He was born February 22, 1831, at Van Buren. Arkansas, died October 17,
1887, buried at Liberty Grove Cemetery in Delta County, Texas. He donated the land for
the cemetery and the school house across the road. He was Captain in the Confederate
Army and was stationed at Velasco, Texas during 1863. Emilys body was reburied at
Liberty Grove Cemetery during 1912 when it was discovered her body had petrified. The
small Liberty Grove Cemetery is part of thousands of acres of, land being acquired for the
Cooper Darn and Reservoir. Where to move the graves has been under consideration for
several months. Mr. Nidever was a surveyor and helped survey for the formation of Delta
County from parts of Lamar and Hopkins Counties when the new County was organized in
1870. He was also the first County Judge of Delta County and a lay minister of the Church
of Christ.

(10) HENRY LEWIS EWING, the tenth child of Wilson Edley Ewing and Hannah
Despain was born November 12, 1835 in Nacogdoches County, Texas, died December 29,
1926 in the Confederate Home at Austin, Texas. He was a Confederate Veteran of the Civil
War, was wounded during the war and had a crippled hand for life. He was a farmer but not
very energetic after the war, probably suffered from shell shock. Married Marzee Bradley,
daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Frank Bradley. September 13, 1866 in Hopkins County, Texas,
they first lived at Charleston, Texas. She was born December 2, 1848, at Charleston, Texas,
died during 1898 in Delta County, Texas. After her death he lived with his children and

AMANDA MELVINA EWING

AMANDA MELVINA EWING, was born about 1809 in Davidson County, Tennessee,
died during the year 1873 at San Augustine, Texas. She was the daughter of Edley Ewing
and Elizabeth Love. Married Jonas Judd Hail, Jr., about 1824 in Davidson County,
Tennessee. He was born in 1802 in Northampton, North Carolina, died during the year of
1868 in San Augustine County, Texas. He was a veteran of the Texas War for
Independence, joined in the march to San Jacinto with Sam Houston, broke his leg on the
way and was left to guard baggage at Harrisburg. He remained crippled until his death. The
family moved to San Augustine County, Texas in 1835, along with her parents and other
kin, Jonas having been granted a league of land by the Mexican Government in 1826. They
became land owners in San Augustine County and their old home four miles west of San
Augustine had a Historical Medallion placed on it a few years ago. Their children were:

MARY AMANDA EWING, a granddaughter of Edley Ewing and Elizabeth Love, living
with them in San Augustine, Texas in 1836. She is reported as being seven years of age in
the first census of Texas but there is nothing to indicate whom her parents were. She
married Hiram Aliff Willson in San Augustine, Texas, October 18, 1844, Edley Ewing
deeded them seven slaves on February 5, 1845, referring to them as his granddaughter and
grandson (the former by consanguinity and the latter by affinity). We next find them living
in Tyler County, Texas, buying and selling land. They are believed to be buried at Chester,
Tyler County, Texas. Some of their descendants may still live in that part of Tyler County,
Texas. The 1870 census of Tyler County, Texas, lists the family as follows:

Mary A. age 39, born in Tennessee
Sam H. age 21, born in Texas.
