Poorly Thought Out Birthday Celebration Leads to Tickets and Fines

th

New Westminster - A young mans recklessness on his 20 birthday led to an unpleasant gift of tickets and fines.
Shortly after midnight, December 9, 2016, Metro Vancouver Transit Police received a report from a SkyTrain
Attendant that a man was riding on the coupler head between eastbound SkyTrain vehicles, as the train pulled into
Royal Oak Station.
The man jumped onto the platform at Royal Oak and boarded the next eastbound train. Transit Police officers
intercepted the train at 22nd Street Station and detained the slightly intoxicated man for questioning. He advised
that he was celebrating his 20th birthday.
The offender, a resident of Chilliwack, was issued a Violation Ticket for riding on the outside of the train, which
carries a fine of $115.00, and a Fare Infraction Notice for no paid fare, which carries a fine of $173.00. He was
warned as to the extreme danger of his actions and sent on his way.
This incident follows a similar set of circumstances which occurred on December 4, 2016, at approximately 1:20
am, when a SkyTrain Attendant reported to Transit Police that an incoming train to Stadium Station had two
outside riders on it. Transit Police officers, on patrol just outside the station, quickly moved in, spotted the two and
detained them.
The parents of the boys, 13 and 14 years of age, from Vancouver and Coquitlam respectively, were notified and
drove in to take them home. Because of the ages of the offenders and the response of their parents, no tickets
were issued. The parents expressed their gratitude for the actions of the officers.
Riding on the outside of the train is an extremely dangerous practice which could lead to serious injury or death. It
also causes an inconvenience to other passengers as it can lead to a guideway intrusion alarm, which causes
delays. Anyone spotting someone riding on the outside of a train is asked to advise Transit Police immediately
