enable the students to know other types of hand tools.

METHODS AND ANALYSIS:

Proper utilization and standardization of cutting commercial size
of tin sheet that is a significant factor in cost reduction of any project.
Have knowledge of working with plan and layout in order to produce a
good quality project.

MATERIALS:
1 piece 12 x 12 tin sheet
1 piece 28 x 1.5 x 0.5 wood
2 pieces of blind rivets

2. Transfer the pattern drawing in a 12 x 12 G.I Sheet

3. Cut the G.I. sheet with a tin snip
4. Using a bender, bend all the possible portion that a bender can
accommodate. The remaining bend, use the mallet and straight wedge
for bending.

5. Cut a 26 x 0.33 x 0.5 wood. Smooth the surface of the wood and
tapered it by 1/3 face width.
6. At the end of the 2 x 1.5, cut it in the mid section at least _ depth.

7. Then attach the wooden handle to the folded G.I. sheet by means of
a rivet. Finish.

QUESTIONS:
1. What is a
Tinsnips
trim

tin snip?
are

designed to cut and

sheet

metal and other thin

yet tough materials. Sheet metal can come in a variety of shapes

and sizes and so tin snips are useful for cutting the sheet metal to
the desired measurements.

2. Why is there a need of clipping the edges of the dust

pan?
Clipping the edges of the dust pan is a form of safety precaution.
Clipping is needed in order to prevent any sharp edges from the
dust pan which can cause wounds specially cuts to the user

3. Is there a need of flaring out the front side of the dust

pan?
Flaring the front side of the dust pan will make the collection of
the dirt of easier because of its shape which prevents the dirt
from settling in the bottom of the dust pan.

4. To avoid breaking out the wood edge while riveting,

what is the best thing to do?
Lay the wood on a flat surface first before riveting since this
would eradicate the unnecessary movement that may cause the
wood edge to break.

5. Why do you use a mallet in pounding a G.I. sheet?

Mallets are used to provide a softer blow on the metal sheet since
they do not leave marks and are less likely to dent the workpiece

6. How many 12 inches by 12 inches G.I. sheet you can

cut out of 4 feet by 8 feet standard G.I. sheet?
32 sheets of 12 inches by 12 inches G.I. sheet can be cut out.

This is because in a 4 feet by 8 feet standard G.I. sheet there will

be two 4 feet by 4 feet part which will yield 16 sheets each.

7. Name two other ways for bending G.I. sheet.

The two other ways of bending G.I. sheet are through the usage
of grinder to create grooves in the sheet for bending and by using
the roll bending.

8. What will happen when you attached a longer handle

to the dust pan?
A longer handle implies that additional strain will be added on the
part where it is attached to. Also, if the handle is too long, there is
a tendency that the dust pan will fall off. The reason behind such
is because there is a greater torque since there will be a longer
lever arm.

9. Why is there a need to tapered the handle?

This removes the sharp edges of the wood which can scratch the
skin or produce the splinter that may penetrate the skin; and this
enables easier gripping of the handle.

10.

What is the use of a flat nose vise grip?

The flat nose vice grip is a good tool for holding flat surfaces
together with sufficient pressure that the work piece cannot move
while you are working on it.

DISCUSSION:
This shop practice is about making a dust pan using a Galvanized
Iron (G.I.) Sheet. It is made by applying protective zinc coating to steel
or iron in order to prevent it from rusting. The first step that the
students did is to copy the template into the given galvanized sheets.
After that, the students cut the template using a tin snip which was
provided. While cutting the template, other students proceed with
tapering the wood that will serve as the dust pans handle. As said
before, tapering the wood will remove sharp edges that could scratch
or wound the skin of the user. Next, the students proceed to the
bending machine to produce the required bends. They clipped the
edge of the metals in order to prevent possible injuries to the user.
After that, the students manually bended the remaining metal parts
with the help of the bench vise and the ball-peen hammer. Mallet
should be used instead of the ball-peen hammer but it is not available.
After that, the students then proceed to the drilling machine to drill a
hole on the wood which will be used for riveting. Lastly, the students
finished the dust pan by flaring out the front side to make the
collection of dirt easier.

CONCLUSION

The student concluded that the students must have a proper

knowledge in using the tools provided not only for this shop
practice but for future shop practice. Having a proper knowledge
in using the tools provided will help them in preventing possible
injuries, and will help them do their work easier. No handling G.I.
sheet in a proper way can inflict cuts. Being careless in using the
bending machine can cause a serious injury to the user.
RECOMMENDATION:
The student recommends that the school should provide
personal protective equipment to the students taking up this
course (ME137L) since most of the time, they are going to deal
with metals, and metals are sharp which may inflict injuries. The
student recommends to its co-student that they should have an
advanced reading of the experiment prior to the day of the
experiment in order to finish the work faster.
