Amul turns to digital platform to sell milk products

AHMEDABAD, JUL 8:
Come Gandhi Jayanti, the icon of cooperative movement, Amul will jump to the next generation
retailing of milk and milk products. The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation
(GCMMF) will sell its milk products through an exclusive digital platform provided by ecommerce major Infibeam.com.
More and more consumers are shifting to e-commerce. We want to be present on all platforms.
With this digital platform, we will be able to sell even perishable product like milk online with
same day delivery. The platform will be up and running by October 1," R S Sodhi, managing
director, GCMMF told BusinessLine.
Besides the liquid milk, the other products include curd, butter, cheese, cottage cheese among
others. Initially, the service will be made available only in Ahmedabad city.
Earlier this month, GCMMF executed an agreement with Ahmedabad-based Infibeam
Incorporation to obtain online e-commerce and mobile platform with integrated logistics
framework for on-demand customer purchase of Amul Products.
Amul would not need to make changes to its existing distribution network to meet the online
demand. Infibeam will take the order and pass on to an Amul distributor, who will arrange the
quickest delivery.
"Infibeam will make a special App for Amul and manage the logistics just the same as they do it
for any other products. All the products will be supplied through our distributors as per order,"
he added. Amul already has presence across India with over 10,000 dealers and more than a
million retail outlets.
It is for the first time, Amul would sell its milk products through exclusive e-commerce platform.
Some of the Amul products are available on select e-commerce platform, but a full-fledged
exclusive online B2C segment is a first for Amul.
Ahmedabad-based e-retailer, Infibeam is engaged in providing online retail services. The NSElisted e-commerce player offers cloud-based, modular, customisable and scalable technology
platform, e-commerce infrastructure and logistics support for a diverse universe of merchants,
products and services.

Amul to expand dark chocolate capacity

AHMEDABAD, APR 25:

Even as Cadbury-makers, on Monday, inaugurated its 60,000 tons per annum (TPA)
manufacturing plant in Andhra Pradesh, Amul said it is expanding chocolate making capacity
from 7,600 TPA to 20,000 TPA by the end of 2016-17, apparently in a bid to enter competition in
a big way.
According to market observers, an indigenous Amul is currently the fourth largest selling
chocolate brand in India after the imported ones like Cadbury, Nestle and Ferrero.
The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets milk and dairy
products under the Amul brand, is all set to milk the response it got for its range of Dark
Chocolates. From being harbingers of the White Revolution, GCMMF may be riding a 'Dark'
Revolution this time.
Driven by the success of its 150-gram bars of Dark Chocolates among the urban consumers, the
worlds largest milk cooperative is expanding its chocolate-making capacity from 7,200 TPA to
about 20,000 TPA by end of this fiscal at its existing manufacturing facility near Anand in
Gujarat.
R S Sodhi, Managing Director, GCMMF, told BusinessLine that Amul has discovered its niche
chocolate consumer segment. "We have redefined chocolate business through a range of Amul
Dark Chocolates. We have been successful in tapping the consumers with our 150-grams bars.
This category is growing fast, and in order to meet the growing demand, we have planned this
expansion.
On Monday, market leader and Cadbury-maker Mondelz International inaugurated its latest
manufacturing plant in Andhra Pradesh with initial installed capacity of 60,000 TPA at an
investment of nearly USD 190 million (approx Rs. 1200 crore). By 2020, it plans to expand
capacity to 2.50 lakh TPA.
Meanwhile, GCMMF sees a 20-25 per cent growth in its chocolate business this fiscal. However,
it refused to divulge the details about the contribution of chocolates to the Federation's total
revenues of Rs.23,005 crore in 2015-16.
Amul currently offers Dark Chocolate in flavours such as Fruit n Nut, Milk Chocolate, Orange,
Mocha, Bitter, Crackers, among others. A latest variant, Belgian Chocolate will be launched by
mid-May.
Besides chocolate, Amul claims to be a formidable player, when it comes to overall cocoa-based
products manufacturing. Amul's in-house processing of cocoa beans into chocolates made it
India's top Ice cream brand in early 2000s, while it is the largest chocolate player in India having
cocoa-based drinks in its beverage portfolio like Amul Kool Koko and Amul PRO Chocolate
drinks.
Known for milk cooperative structure, Amul introduced chocolates in the country in the 1970s to
prevent exploitation of cocoa-bean producers of India at the hands of multinational companies.

MILK VENDORS BOYCOTT MAY HIT

AMUL,GOKUL MILK SUPPLY

The distributors have been seeking an increase in commission rate and the Thane
City Milk Business Welfare Association's boycott comes after it gave time to five
companies Amul, Gokul, Mother Dairy, Mahananda and Warna to increase the
same from 1-2 per cent to at least 7-8 per cent.
City residents and residents of Thane, Kalyan and Navi Mumbai are unlikely to get
their share of Amul and Gokul brand milk packets from today after the Thane
district's milk distribution association decided to boycott the brands.
The had been agitating against the
companies since April 22. As the boycott intensified across Mumbai, the big milk
brands sought 15 days from the vendors association to look into the matter and
assured them that their commission rate would be increased.
"Mother Dairy, Warna and Mahananda have agreed to give us an increased
commission of 7-8 oer cent," said Pandurang Chodnekar, joint secretary of the Thane
City Milk Business Welfare Association. "Gokul and Amul are still not ready to shell
out anything more. Hence we have decided to boycott these two milk brands."
The boycott will start from Thane and spread to Dombivli, Kalyan, Panvel, Navi
Mumbai and Mumbai. In Thane, the areas near the station, such as Charai, Khopat,
Panchpakhadi and Naupada will be most affected while Pokharan Road and
Ghodbunder road areas will be least affected.
Incidentally, while the association has been demanding higher commission rates, the
heat is gradually turning on them as people have been complaining about being
overcharged for milk packets. Thane's measures and weight department has received
more than 200 complaints about the same recently.

Amul starts first bio-CNG generation, bottling plant

Vadodara/ Anand: The Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers Union Limited popularly
known as Amul Dairy has become the first in India's food industry to start a fully automated
bio-CNG generation and bottling plant to utilize energy from its plant's waste.
Earlier, the dairy union used to flare the biogas into the atmosphere by burning it. While
burning raw biogas some elements like carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide used to get
released into atmosphere harming the environment. But a few months back as part of its
green initiative, Amul decided to reutilize the biogas and adopted medium pressure swing
adsorption (MPSA) technology to convert biogas into bio-CNG. "We are the first in the dairy
sector as also the food industry of the country to design, install and commission such a
technology along with our Ahmedabad-based technical partner Atmos Power Private
Limited," said Amul Dairy's managing director Dr K Rathnam.

For every litre of milk that is processed at the dairy, one litre water (two million litre a day) is
used for chemical cleaning of plant and machinery. This water has residual milk solids which
earlier emitted 2,500 cubic metre of methane per day with 60 to 65 % purity.
Now, the raw biogas from digesters is first collected in double membrane raw biogas balloon
having capacity 1,000 cubic metre.
From raw biogas balloon, it is transferred for purification where it is passed through various
phases like de-sulphuriser to remove sulphur, energizer for heat exchange, inter cooler for
chilling of gas, moisture separator for separation of moisture, energizer again for heat
exchange and dryer to absorb moisture.
MPSA tower is used for further purification and then passed to surge tank for storage of
purified bio-CNG having more 93 percent of methane content. From surge tank, it is
transferred and stored into another double membrane purified biogas balloon having capacity
1000 cubic metre. Finally, it is compressed and filled into cylinders for use.
"Purified biogas is as good as CNG having more than 93 percent of methane content. We
have started using the purified biogas at our food complex at Mogar," said Rathnam.
The co-operative has invested Rs 1.75 crore for implementing this technology. "After
deducting our investment, we are saving Rs 25 per cubic metre of gas which is a saving of Rs
12 lakh per month," he said, adding that the payback period is less than two years. "In the
process, we are helping protect environment.
