Q1. FIGURE-Q1 shows a stepped shaft fixed at one end and subjected to an axial force
F at the other end. The length of step i is Li and its diameter is Di, i=1,2,3. All the
steps are made of the same material with Youngs modulus E.
a. Find the spring constant (or stiffness) k,i of step i (i=1,3)
b. Find the equivalent spring constant (or stiffness) of the stepped shafts, keq, in the
axial direction so that F = ka,eq. x.
c. Indicate whether the steps behave as series or parallel springs.

Q6. A composite propeller shaft, made of steel and aluminum, is shown in FIGUREQ6.
a.
b.
Determine the torsional spring constant of the composite shaft when the
inner diameter of the aluminum tube is 5 cm instead of 10 cm.
Assume that the shear modulus G for steel and aluminum are 80x109 Pa and 26 x109
Pa, respectively.
