FINAL PROJECT
Due Date: 1800 on May 25, 2016
Consider a 2-D lid-driven cavity flow governed by the following nondimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a rectangular domain 0 x XL and 0 y YL :
ui
=0
xi

1 ui
p
ui
+
+
uj ui =
t
xj
xi Re xj xj

for i = 1, 2

with the following boundary conditions on ui = (u, v) (call them SET-1):

XL = 1; YL = 1; U = 1
u(0, y) = 0 and v(0, y) = 0
u(XL , y) = 0 and v(XL , y) = 0
u(x, 0) = 0 and v(x, 0) = 0
u(x, YL ) = U and v(x, YL ) = 0
where Re =

XL U
.

1. Develop your own CFD code OR use any CFD commercial software, e.g. ANSYS-FLUENT,
to simulate the flow field.
2. Validate your results on a 81 81 uniform grid at Re = 1000 by comparing the u-velocity
distribution along vertical centerline and v-velocity distribution along horizontal centerline
with the results obtained in other numerical studies. NOTE: Numerical results for Re = 1000
can easily be found using internet. Use appropriate tolerance criteria.
3. Verify your results by performing grid independent studies for the parameters used in the
previous step.
4. Plot the horizontal and vertical velocity component contours, spanwise vorticity contours,
and velocity vector plots.
5. Plot and comment on the behavior of convergence with time. Is it monotone?
6. Study convergence on various grid sizes. Plot and comment on the CPU time vs grid sizes.
7. Study different tolerance criteria for convergence. Plot and comment on the CPU time vs
tolerance. Use semilog plot.
8. Vary Re = 100 1000 with an increment of 100 and comment on the qualitative change
in the flow structure; especially on the location of primary and secondary vortices. Make
a table with three columns: (1) Re = 100, 200, ..., 1000 (2) minimum horizontal velocity
(umin ) within primary vortex and (3) corresponding coordinates.

PROJECT STATEMENT
You are on the design team of a new subsonic bomber aircraft. Being an expert in CFD,
you have been tasked to analyze the flow in the weapons bay of the aircraft with the following
nondimensional geometry and boundary conditions (call them SET-2):
XL = 4; YL = 1; U = 1
u(0, y) = 0 and v(0, y) = 0
u(XL , y) = 0 and v(XL , y) = 0
u(x, 0) = U and v(x, 0) = 0
u(x, YL ) = 0 and v(x, YL ) = 0
As a researcher, you approximate the problem with a 2-D lid-driven cavity flow and compute
the pressure distribution along the walls. After succesfully performing YOUR analysis, you plan
to submit your findings in 2017 AIAA SciTech Conference. Write a preliminary research paper
strictly following IEEE template (MS word or Latex) with the following sections:
1. Title, Author, Affiliation, and Abstract [5]
2. Introduction [15]
3. Numerical Methodology [30]
4. Results [25]
5. Discussion [15]
6. Conclusion [5]
7. Acknowledgment (if any)
8. Bibliography (at least 10 references) [5]
IMPORTANT NOTES:
1. TITLE: Give appropriate title to your work. Include the names of authors actually doing the
work. Do NOT include instructors, HODs, Principals etc. unless someone is really involved
in the work. Mention the affiliation of each author(s). Write an abstract of 200-300 words.
2. INTRODUCTION: It should include motivation of this work, a thourough literature review,
objective and your contribution in this research area.
3. NUMERICAL METHODOLOGY: Present the govening equations and the numerical method
to solve these equations (your code or commerical software). Perform all the steps from (2)(8) mentioned on page 1 with SET-1 boundary conditions.
4. RESULTS: After validation and verification, you can now use boundary conditions in SET-2
for your assigned project. Present numerical results for the velocity and pressure fields.
5. DISCUSSION: Discuss your results. Analyze and justify the optimal location for placing
loads in the weapons bay.
6. CONCLUSION: Summarize the final outcome of your research work.
7. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: If you think someone was of help in your work, thank him/her.
8. BIBLIOGRAPHY: Cite good reference. Give priority to recent journal articles. Do NOT
cite website references.
