Introductory Activity
A. Introduction
A bent rod is clamped at one end, and loaded by 2000lb force at the other end. The
material is steel with Youngs modulus of 30e+6 and Poisson ratio of 0.3. To create the FEA,
elements can be linear or parabolic. Linear are faster to compute but less accurate as
compared to parabolic. Another benefit of the parabolic is it fits better with curved surfaces.
Von misses stress in used as a main factor of consideration in design as it is considered to e
the effective stress. To increase accuracy, Parabolic elements is used for the case with smaller
( ~0.1 in per element) elements.
A foot pedal is made of steel and loaded with 100lb along the edge. It is clamped at the
end. A cylindrical Bar under torsion is made of steel with torque of 1500 lb in. It is equivalent
to 1000lb separated by 1.5 in. In terms of strength of materials, the answer is 7643 following
the formula t = TR/j, with j as the polar moment of inertia

III. Conclusion
It can be concluded that element type and size plays a major role in the FEM
and FEA. It affects the global error of the analysis. Parabolic and a smaller size element yields a
more accurate result. Von misses will also be use as a design factor in FEM/FEA. It is considered
to the be the effective stress of the design. CATIA FEM also has the ability for stress,
displacements and stress visualization for better viewing by engineers to further improve certain
details of the designs.
ILISAROV BRACE
I.
Introduction
An Ilizarov brace is a type of fixation used in orthopedic surgery to increase length or
deform limb bones. It is done on complex bone fractures. In FEM, structural analysis
of the Ilizarov assembly. It will be first assembled in part assembly in catia, then a
static structural analysis is to be done. Due to assembly complexity, it would take
more time for it to analyze the analysis.

Conclusion
Due to hardware limitations, it was impossible for parabolic element computations to
happen which could have improved the accuracy of the results. It also not a complete
Ilisarov assembly since its just using a single level Ilisarov. It must also be noted that
the 4 crossing circular bars are pressure fitted and bolts are bolt tightened. Loads are
on the Crossing point of the circular bars.
MATSMEM
I.
Introduction
In materials selection, it important to take into consideration not only the price, but also
the strength of the materials. It might not be recommended to replace steel by aluminum
or vice versa. In catia, it can simulate how materials would affect the design due to
varying values of the deformation.

III. Conclusion
To conclude, it has shown great error in computations, it might have been caused by wrong
measurements on the actual experimentations or misrepresentation in the FE models. On certain
cases on the tensile has shown lower errors. There is also a slight inaccuracy on modelling of the
test specimen
FINAL PROJ
I.
Introduction
A folding, double deck bed is mounted on a wall with a letter F post. It is
specifically mounted on the bars of the post. A maximum distributed load 300 lbs.
are added each of the beds. FEM will be used to find the breaking point and to
tell whether the structure could handle the load. Note that the bed will be bolt
tightened at the sides connected to the posts.
