Knowledge:
Students will understand what an economy is.
Students can describe scarcity and how it functions in an economy.
Skill:
Work as a group to solve a problem related to scarcity.

Materials:
PAT practice tests
Accompanying handout for the lecture slides. (50)
25 cups of various sizes. (Some decorative?)
Juice crystals to make a half gallon.
Chocolate (6 to 8 pieces?)
Preparation:
Organize cups juice and chocolate in an easy to reach place (Put all in cupboard.)
Groups:
1-T, E, R, M K, D, J, Ki, Si
2-Ta, M V, Jo, Me, A, N, D, T
3-M, Ti, Sa, Jo, L, H, B, Co, Sh
Adaptations:
Placing stronger students in groups with weaker students. Ensuring a gender balance in
the groups so some students arent uncomfortable.

Handouts for notes on the powerpoint so students can follow along.

How to answer a test question
o Read out strategies, do practice test question.
Part 1 PAT Practice
Practice Test
o 45 minutes, place reminders on the board to write name on booklet and
test.
o If students finish early, start marking early.
Quiz Marking
o Read through each question, poll the students on what the answer was.
o Ask students if they need or want any clarification about why the answer
was what it was.
o Emphasize that they need to read the questions carefully as one or two
words can really change the meaning of the answer.
Part 2 What Is an Economy?
Begin Economy lecture
o Hand out glossary and notes page
Scarcity Activity
o Divide students into 3 groups, one will split up chocolate, another will
split up juice, and the last will divide the cups. Cannot talk to each group
Hand out sheet with instructions

o Give student 10 minutes to make their decisions.


o Discuss: Why did you divide it the way to did? What were your
priorities?
Conclusion
Students will end the class by adding to their definition of scarcity in their
glossary, and in their notes. This is an important term to understand
economics decisions.
If time permits, we can continue with the lecture slides, or discuss more current
events that students would like to share.

Assessment:
