Chapter 1 Making Healthy Choices

Think of five different ways to


complete this sentence:
To me, being healthy means being able to

the well being of your body,your mind,and your relationships.

The definition of health includes 6 different


components of well-being.

Physical Health -

having a well functioning body and being free of illness

Mental Health
having a high self-esteem and being able to
cope with daily demands.

Social Health
the ability get along well with others.

EmotionalCan express emotions In a


constructive manner and knows when
to get help when dealing with dicult
feelings

SpiritualHas deep morals and values and


develops a strong faith and
connection to their beliefs.

EnvironmentalHas access to clean water and healthy


environment,and contributes to the
cleanliness of ones surroundings

Wellness
Do you think any one aspect is more
important that the others? Or are they all
connected?
Wellness: When a person has a peak level of all six components of health,we
refer to this as total body of wellness.

Identifying Health Risks


The decisions you make and the risks you take
contribute to where you fall along the wide
spectrum of health.
(poor health verses optimal health)
This spectrum is referred to as the illnesswellness continuum.

Risk Factor:any action or condition that can lead to illness or injury


Risk Factors fall into three categories:
Hereditary Risk Factors
All the traits that are passed biologically from parent to child.

Environmental Risk Factors


all the physical and social conditions surrounding a person and the influence they
have on that person.

Behavioral Risk Factors


the decisions you make each day.

Without taking moderate risks and


trying new things it would be
impossible to grow as a person.
Weighing the risks and/or reducing
the risk is important.

Not all risks pose an immediate


threat, some build over time.

All of these causes of death can be linked to
hereditary, environmental, and most certainly
behavioral risk factors.

-Healthy People 2020 has several goals including:
-A tremendous focus is also being placed on health care and
health services.

The leading cause of death for young people


today is motor vehicle accidents. Along with
heart disease, this cause of death could be
prevented by making educated decisions and
changing some of our unhealthy habits and
behaviors.
In order for a person to change a behavior, they must go
through the following process:

Decision-making
4.
Apply skills
