Diffusion Lab
Pre-lab Questions
1. Define Diffusion: Spreading molecules to create equilibrium.
2. Define Osmosis: A process by which molecules of a solvent tend to
pass through a semipermeable membrane.
3. What is the difference between Osmosis and Diffusion: Diffusion refers
to the movement of any chemical from one place to another, where
osmosis exclusively refers to the movement of water across a
membrane.
4. Molecules tend to move from an area of high concentration to areas of
low concentration.
Scientific Question
What will happen if we take a prepared dialysis tube bag filled with
starch solution and apply it into a solution, what will happen? What will
happen if we add three drops of iodine?
Independent Variable
Concentration of solution.
Dependent Variable
Molecule movement.
Hypothesis
The diffusion of starch will occur from high to low, therefor starch will
move through the semi-permeable membrane to the beaker to react with the
iodine.
Materials
Saran-wrap, twist ties, iodine, pipette, beakers, and test-tubes.
Procedures
1. Prepare the dialysis tubing by rubbing the ends of the tubing apart
between your fingers. Twist one end of the tube, then fold over and
tightly tie off with a piece of string.
2. Fill dialysis tubing halfway with starch solution.

Twist the other end of the tubing, folded over in tightly tie off with a
piece of string. Rinse the dialysis bag carefully under the sink with
water in then the submerge into a beaker of water for 10 minutes.
After 10 minutes, take a pipette full of water from the Baker and add it
to test tube number one.
To test for the presence of starch add three drops of iodine solution to
the test tube. Record your observations in the data table.
Remove the dialysis bag from the water, and pour out the water, and
rinse the beaker.
Fill the Baker about halfway with water and then add 25 drops of iodine
and stir well.
Place the dialysis bag in the beaker and let sit for 15 minutes.
Move the tubing from the beaker and record your observations in the
data table.

Observations
Iodine went into the dialysis bag, yet nothing went out. No color left, just
white was added. It allowed certain molecules enter and rejected some while
not losing any important content.

Analysis of Results
1. Which substances were entering and leaving the bag? Iodine went into
the bag and nothing went out.
2. What experimental evidence supports your answer? There was nothing
missing and white was added.
3. Explain how the dialysis tubing acted like a semi-permeable
membrane. It allowed certain molecules enter and rejected some while
while not losing any important content.
Conclusion
1. What is the relationship between the independent variable and
dependent variable? How did changing the independent variable
change the dependent variable? Changing the amount of drops of
iodine we put into the solution affected how much concentration we
retained.
2. Explain the results of your experiment by using data. After we poured in
25 drops of iodine, we put the solution into one dualisms tube bag.
3. Was your hypothesis accepted or rejected and how do you know? Yes,
my hypothesis was correct because all of the steps lined up exactly as
they were planned out.
4. What error occurred during the lab? We accidentally left the tube in the
beaker for a little too long, that might be why our solution was so
concentrated.
5. What further investigations could you do? See what the solution would
be like if you left it in over night with less iodine and also add more
iodine for less time.
