Introducing the 554 and 574 Forwarders


Caterpillar Forwarders provide loggers the durability, reliability and results they have
come to expect from Cat machines.

Caterpillar has set the trend for


durability over the last 75 years and has
a reputation for manufacturing products
that withstand the test of time.
Caterpillar has been in the forestry
business for generations and has a full
understanding of forestry applications.
One of Caterpillars priorities has been
to engineer a full, cut-to-length forestry
product line that provides trusted Cat
reliability.

Todays logger must consider many


different criteria before investing in
a forwarder.

Harsh forestry conditions require


equipment that will hold up in
a variety of applications without
sacrificing production.

Caterpillar now offers two models of


forwarders which are designed and
built to handle a wide variety of forestry
applications.

The 554 and 574 Forwarders are built


with proven components and are fieldtested to ensure the highest level of
reliability over the life of the machine.

A combination of versatile
maneuverability and exceptional
operating comfort allow for increased
production levels throughout the
shift.

By utilizing ample hydraulic flow and


state-of-the-art controls, the 554 and
574 Forwarders can quickly collect
and transport heavy loads.

Both models feature high lifting


capacity and traveling speed to
deliver logs to the landing as quickly
and efficiently as possible.

By utilizing the front powered bogie lift


and eight-wheel drive transmission, the
operator can maneuver the machine in
the tightest of thinning areas. Once in
position, the operator can take full
advantage of the extended reach and
lifting capability to access logs in
extremely dense conditions. The bogie
lift is standard on the 574 and optional
on the 554.

The 554 and 574 Forwarders provide the


necessary hydraulic flow, tractive
mobility and power to load logs on
steep slopes and unfavorable terrain,
giving the customer the ability to drive
an efficient and productive loading
operation. The 554 Forwarder is
powered by the Caterpillar 3054 DITA
Engine. The 574 utilizes the Caterpillar
3126 DITA Engine.

Caterpillar Forwarders can be used in


a wide variety of applications, from
first thinning to final felling. These
forwarders provide the versatility,
durability and reliability todays logger
needs to effectively manage their cutto-length operation.

3054 DITA Engine


Caterpillar 554 Forwarders deliver cost effective power for hauling wood to the roadside.
The Caterpillar 554 is powered by the
91 kW (122 hp) Caterpillar 3054 DITA
Engine.

Performs at the full-rated flywheel


power.

Three-ring pistons are made of


lightweight, silicon/aluminum alloy for
strength and maximum thermal
conductivity.
Crankshaft is chrome/molybdenumsteel forged with tuffride hardened
journals for long-term durability.

Front and rear crankshaft oil seals are


lip type Viton design featuring an
integral dust lip.

Cylinder block is high-strength cast iron


alloy of deep-skirt, monobloc design for
increased strength and extended life.

Uses replaceable flanged press-fit,


dry-type cast-iron liners.

Cylinder head is high-strength, castiron alloy construction with extraduty wall and deck thickness.

Intake and exhaust ports are fully


machined.

Direct-injection fuel system provides


accurate fuel delivery. Injectors are
easily accessible.

Two-stage air cleaner improves


viewing by eliminating hood-mounted
precleaner.

Dry-type, radial sealed.

Thermal starting aid system for


efficient cold weather starting is
standard.

Exhaust valves are heat-resistant,


silicone-chrome steel intake and stellitefaced to help extend engine life.

3126 DITA Engine


The Caterpillar 574 is one of the most powerful forwarders in the world.
The Caterpillar 574 delivers powerful
performance with the 122 kW (163 hp)
Caterpillar 3126 DITA Engine.

The four-stroke cycle design delivers


long power strokes and efficient fuel
combustion with low emissions.

Precisely engineered and stringently


tested to maintain a tradition of
quality.

Built-in serviceability and excellent


fuel economy.

Caterpillar understands the importance


of environmental safety standards. The
3126 Caterpillar Engine meets all
current and proposed worldwide
emissions control standards up to the
year 2002 and is approved for
worldwide use.
Torque rise. The unit-injected fuel
system provides a controlled fuel
delivery increase as the engine lugs
back from rated speed. A combination
of increased torque rise and high peak
horsepower improves response,
provides greater rimpull, more lift force
and faster cycle times. The peak power
occurs when power is needed during the
working cycle.
Turbocharger enhances performance
and engine efficiency, especially at high
altitudes by packing more air in the
cylinders for excellent combustion.

Jacket Water Aftercooler reduces


smoke and emissions by providing
a cooler, more efficient combustion.
This also extends the life of the piston
rings and bore.
Individual, high-pressure unit injectors
atomize fuel efficiently for fast
response, increased fuel economy with
low emissions. The radius cone injector
nozzle provides excellent contact with
the cylinder head sleeve to ensure
a good seal with the combustion
chamber.
Fuel pre-filter and water separator
element combined with two, high
efficiency fuel filters, in series, ensure
excellent fuel cleanliness for extended
injector and fuel system life.
Camshaft roller followers reduce wear
and frictional power losses for excellent
fuel economy. Followers and pushrods
can be replaced without removing the
camshaft.

Two-piece, articulated pistons with


forged steel crown and forged
aluminum skirt provide durability, low
engine sound levels, enhanced fuel
efficiency with improved thermal and
structural capability.

The new Chrome Ceramic Surface


(CCS) ring package, specifically
developed for high load/high
temperature applications,
significantly improves engine block
life.

Crankshaft is forged and induction


hardened for long-term durability.

Seven main journals and eight


counterweights and is dynamically
balanced for smooth operation.

Completely regrindable. Connecting


rods can be removed through the tops
of the cylinders for servicing ease.

Deep skirt engine block design ensures


rigidity and reduces vibration.

Operator ergonomics are improved


through an eight-way adjustable
seat, with seven-way adjustable
armrests. The customer may choose
an air ventilated and/or air
suspended seat as an option to
further the comfort of the operator.

Mini Control Levers are used to


operate the knuckleboom loader and
are engineered to give the operator
finger tip control. Less body
movement allows for higher
concentration levels and increased
efficiency.
Excellent viewing area allows the
operator maximum vision to site out
the most productive path possible
and gives the operator a full
peripheral view of the forest area,
thus improving loading times and
increasing productivity.

Windows are made of


polycarbonate material to
promote maximum protection for
the operator while maintaining
an unobstructed view.

Cab is ROPS/FOPS/OPS certified.

Transmission and Suspension


Caterpillar Forwarders deliver the versatility and tractive ability needed for demanding
forestry applications.
The 554 Forwarder features
a hydrostatic circuit and a 2-speed
power shift transmission that provides
power to all eight wheels.
The 574 Forwarder features
a hydrostatic circuit and a 3-speed
power shift transmission that provides
power to all eight wheels.
A powered front bogie lift is optional
on the 554 and standard on the 574.
This feature on Caterpillar Forwarders
enables the machine to achieve
maximum tractive ability in poor
underfoot conditions.

Each bogie is controlled by a separate


hydraulic cylinder for individual
movement on each side of the
forwarder. The operator has the ability
to climb over high stumps or rocks, as
well as traveling through deep snow or
extremely wet conditions. Stability
while loading or unloading is controlled
by the oscillation lock cylinder, either
automatically or manually.

Tiltable Loader on the 574 Forwarder


P rovides accessibility to those hard-to-reach areas.

The 574 Forwarder comes standard


with a tiltable loader for easy access to
those hard-to-reach areas. This unique
design gives the loader a fore and aft
capability of 15 degrees.
The tiltable loader makes these
forwarders a more versatile product
with decreased cycle times and
outstanding productivity.

Improved loading on sloped conditions


is also possible with the tiltable loader.
By utilizing the tilt capability, the
operator can load the bunk area with the
boom in a vertical position, reducing
side torque and increasing the life of the
linkage.

The tilt function is controlled by


a single hydraulic cylinder, located
at the base of the knuckleboom
loader. This feature is extremely
valuable for thinning applications.

554/574 Forwarder Applications


Caterpillar Forwarders decrease overall cycle times while providing low fuel consumption
levels and minimal ground disturbance.

Caterpillar Forwarders utilize a hydrostatic/mechanical transmission to


achieve high tractive force in tough
underfoot conditions. Caterpillar has
also addressed important environmental
issues by engineering a machine that

The 554 Forwarder incorporates
a 10 metric ton payload while the 574
Forwarder incorporates a 14 metric ton
