Ceramic Test Tiles: Standards/Quality Indicators/Skills

Missouri and national standards, quality indicators, and skills addressed by the lesson.

MO GLE: II.1.D.8 Identify and use invented texture, V.1.A.8 Identify works of art from United States, I.2.A.8 Modeling with
clay: create a three- dimensional artwork demonstrating appropriate joining, V.1.A.8 Identify works of art from United States
National:VA:Cr1.1.8a Document early stages of the creative process visually and/or verbally in traditional or new media,
VA:Cr2.1.8a: Demonstrate willingness to experiment, innovate, and take risks to pursue ideas, forms, and meanings that
emerge in the process of art- making or designing, VA:Re.7.1.8a: Explain how a persons aesthetic choices are influenced by
culture and environment and impact the visual image that one conveys to others, Re9.1.8a Create a convincing and logical
argument to support an evaluation of art.
Learning Objectives/Goals
The lessons objectives and intended learning outcomes appropriate for meeting curricular and student needs

In order to stretch and explore, students will experiment, innovate, and take risks in the creation of ceramic test
tiles. A minimum of three tiles will investigate invented texture. Students will document their discoveries in a guided
note taking worksheet.
Assessment (the type[s] of assessment used throughout the lesson)
Assessment(s) before, during, and after the lesson.

Before: Ask questions to check for understanding. During: Instructor will walk around the classroom and observe
students at work, conferencing and asking questions. After: Guided note taking and Rubric.
Lesson Structure and Procedures
Sequence of events of the lesson elements. (The before, during, and after the lesson, e.g., Engagement/Opening, Procedures,
Guided Practice, Conclusion)

Preparation Before Class: Cut clay tiles. Have enough fired clay tiles for each student to have three. Have table
trays loaded up with all materials/tools needed.Engagement/Opening: Introduce unit plan goal of creating a 3D
sculpture with enhanced surface texture and the lesson as experimentation/studies to explore and understand the
medium.Connection to Prior Learning: Builds on students prior experience with clay.Modeling: In conjunction
with demonstration, lecture, and discussion to show students a variety of media and techniques.Procedures:
Show slideshow to introduce stages of clay/mediums/techniques with whole group discussion/questioning. Have
students transition from seats to a central table for viewing a demonstration using the material/techniques for
exploring the lesson. Also demonstrate how to use the guided note taking form while modeling expectations for
test tiles. I will review lesson expectations and check for understanding by asking specific questions before
releasing students for independent practice. One person from each table retrieves the table tray. Instructor passes
out bags with both fired and placid ceramic tiles.Independent Practice: Students create their test tiles and fill out
guided note taking graphic organizer.Clean-up: Ten minutes before the end of class, students clean all tools and
place table trays back on counters. Clean tables. Conclusion: Students sit at tables and wait for bell dismissal.
Instructional Strategies
Teacher approach to helping students achieve the learning objectives and meet their needs.

Lecture (introduce project and explains project criteria), Questioning (check for understanding of project criteria
during lecture/demonstration), Demonstration (show students how to do each technique with each medium)
-Visual Aid (teacher exemplar and projected images of test tiles along with project criteria written on the board
which I will point to), Independent practice, Conferencing (during work time)
Learning Activities
Opportunities provided for students to develop knowledge and skills of the learning objectives.

Participating in discussion, Listening to lecture, Asking questions, Explore/experiment with surface enhancement
mediums/techniques, documenting explorations
Resources and Materials
List of tools, personnel, and materials used in the planning of and during the instruction of the lesson.

Test Tiles, Oil pastels, Tempera paint, Watercolor paint, Slip, Underglaze, Paper, Squeeze Bottles, paint brushes,
water cups, paper towels, wine corks, hot glue guns, hair dryers, slideshow
Technology
Instructional and/or assistive technology incorporated into the lesson to enhance instruction and student learning.

Projector and laptop

Differentiation/Accommodations/Modifications/Increases in Rigor
To help meet the needs of all learners, learning differences, cultural and language differences, etc.

Differentiation: Content presented visually, verbally, and in writing. Accommodations: Students with physical
limitations will be provided with appropriate working space, large handled tools for students with dexterity
limitations, air drying clay for students with allergies, fewer tiles required for students with extreme physical
handicapes.Modifications: Students with reading/writing IEPs will be required to fill out a modified notetaking
worksheet. Increase in Rigor: Advanced students will be encouraged to add greater complexity to their tiles.
Classroom Management
Strategies consistent with the learning needs of the lesson that also meet student behavior needs to help keep the students on
task and actively engaged.

Bell work, Consistent procedures, Studio procedures including gathering materials/storage of artworks/clean up,
Proximity, Verbal redirection, Preferential seating, Buddy room

Extensions
Activities for early finishers that extend the students understanding of and thinking about the learning objectives by applying their
new knowledge in a different way.

Students who finish early will begin research/planning sheet for their final sculpture.
Follow-Up to Todays Lesson
Quick activity for review or building on todays learning that will deepen student understanding and interconnect concepts (may
be incorporated tomorrow or throughout the unit).

This lesson will lead directly into the next lesson: planning for a 3D sculpture
