Here are a dozen things to do in the days running up to
Christmas. (For more events, see our Community Calendar

I News in Brief
Coats for Kids Drive Collects
500+ for County Children
Over 500 local school children visited
New Jersey Motorsports Park recently to
enjoy their Coats for Kids holiday program hosted by the New Jersey
Motorsports Park Green Flag Childrens
Charities.
Cumberland County elementary and
middle school students, selected by their
school, chose a brand-new winter coat, a
pair of gloves or mittens, a hat and a scarf,
a book or two and then enjoyed a hot,

healthy lunch, plus a visit with Santa and

some corporate mascots. Each item was
donated to the drive by corporations, Green
Flag Committee members, and racers.
The Green Flag Committee volunteers
work hard to support our local childrens
organizations, said Don Fauerbach,
founder of the NJMP Green Flag
Committee. For the ninth year in a row
we are providing these children in need
with warmth and happiness during the
holidays. Were thankful for the support of
our sponsors, our community, and all the
racers who have helped us raise the funds
necessary to accomplish this special goal
for these children.
Leading the corporate contribution list

are; Bottinos ShopRite, South Jersey Gas,

Atlantic City Electric and Ocean First
Bank with their generous contributions.
Bottinos ShopRite Stores donated, prepared and served the complete luncheon
for the children, and South Jersey Gas,
Atlantic City Electric, and Ocean First
Bank are provided funding to purchase a

The motorsports community has once
again provided significant support for this
years coat drive. The South Jersey Region
of the Sport Car Club of America (SCCA)
conducted a fund drive to benefit Coats
for Kids, raising hundreds of dollars to
help purchase additional winter coats during their recent regional races held at
NJMP, and numerous Porsche and BMW
racing clubs have also made substantial
contributions.

Ministerium Supports Needy

The Vineland Ministerium of churches,
through the Cumberland County Hunger
Appeal, has given over $4,500 to various
soup kitchens and food pantries in the
area. The appeal has been under the
administration of the Ministerium for
more than 40 years. The appeal is made
each November with the proceeds going
to feed the hungry and to assist Vineland
Electric clients in paying their electric
bills during the winter months. Last year
over 90 families were assisted with their
electric bills.
During this season of giving it is only
right that we should share with those who
have limited choices said Pastor Gary
Stiegler, president of the Vineland
Ministerium and coordinator for the
appeal. The giving this year has been
over $10,000 and we will do our part in
sharing these funds with those in need.
For more information on the Vineland
Ministerium of churches or to donate to
the appeal, contact Pastor Stiegler at 856691-4278.

& up

his Thanksgiving, I dont know

what came over me, but all of
my efforts to keep a clean diet
flew right out the window when
I finished whipping the mashed potatoes.
It starts with cleaning the beaters with
my fingers to get the sticky mash off them,
and then licking my fingers clean.
Repeatedly.
Pretty soon I am taste-testing the sweet
potatoes baked in brown sugar and butter,
and after that I have to sample the ginger
snaps because, after all, I used gluten-free
flour in them and skipped rolling the
dough in sugar.
By the end of the dinner I have my fork
deep in a slab of carrot cake piled dinerstyle high with cream cheese frosting. And
I have to say I was feeling pretty thankful.
If I were a statue, I would be titled,
Gluttony Run Amok.
I am back on the wagon now, and back
to my exercise routine, but I will not step
on the scale anytime soon. Uh-uh. That
could be fatal.
When I was little, my mother used to
recite a little poem that surfaces in my
mind when I find myself on that slippery
slope toward death by indulgence:
A sliver
A slice
A slab
A slob
Mom also said its no big sin if you gain
two pounds in a year. But two pounds a
year over 10 years? Thats mortal.
This was a good holiday, though. Its our
daughters senior year in high school, and
we dont know where she will be off to next
year. She herself is a little anxious about it.
She has said all along that she would no way
go to a college in New Jersey; she wanted
to go someplace warm, far away from here.
But she might soften her stance on that.
I have had my moments with her over
the years. She says yes. I say no. I say stop.
She says go, go, go.
I am keeping mum while she decides
because, if I tell her to go, go, go out of
state, shell say shes staying. If I say stay,
shell be gone like a shot.
She calls me a hoverer when I question wheres the party, who shell be with,
whats the moms name and number, and
when will she be home.

Why do you need to know everything?

she fumes.
Here I borrow a line from my sister,
who raised three daughters:
So I can tell the police where to start
their search.
I know you all are wondering if we have
Decorated the Christmas yet, and I am
happy to report we have almost finished
using up our stash of baubles. We shopped
on Black Friday and found a solar-powered
LED light gun that sprinkles the front of
our house with dots of colored light. Its
pretty, convenient, shines sundown to
sunup and powers on and off automatically.
Our autistic son Greg is pleased, which
makes it the miracle gift of the century. If
wed known it would make him happy, we
would have bought one years ago. But you
cant count on anything making him happy,
except Chilis Original Chicken Crispers
for dinner.
Every. Third. Saturday. Or Else.
Our oldest son, George, 29, is married
now to his high-school sweetheart, Kaitlin.
They are DINKs (double income, no kids),
and right now they are visiting friends in
Hawaii and enjoying umbrella drinks on
coconut-palm beaches.
Its a darn poor family that cant afford
one sport, right?
He is our first child and we love him
dearly, but nothing moves fast when you
need him to help outcleaning his room

He drove us crazy with his procrastination. His dad blew up one day and used the
L word, which I had banned in our home,
for fear it might damage his self-esteem.
Dad just could not hold it in any longer.
George, you are so LAZY!
I gasped, thinking how many hours of
therapy it would take to erase that word
from his memory. I was a ninny back then.
But our son, the future lawyer, just
smiled.
I am not lazy, he said, Im gradual.
As I write this, we are about two weeks
away from Christmas. Gradually, I have
been working on a stress-free holiday,
small tasks each day, only the essentials, no
obsessing. If it works, I will start the New
Year with more fab, less flab.
It could happen. I

Experienced & Caring

Groomers in a
Relaxed Atmosphere

Folsom employees at Oldcastle Precast Pipe Co. continue to participate in local community events. Many
employees are volunteering at their local church food
banks, helping to serve meals, and donating food.
Sometimes, the need arises to help our animal friends
also. The Cumberland County SPCA recently had to
shorten their hours of operation due to lack of funding
and donations. They found an organization that will reimburse them for each pair of shoes donated. The money
they receive helps provide the care needed by an animal
in the shelter. The shoes will also be re-purposed and
used again to help a person somewhere in the world who needs them. In this case,
the shoes are going to Haiti.
It's a win-win-win situationfolks got to clean out closets, the animals get the
care they need, and those shoes go on to live a new life where someone in need is
benefited by them. The Folsom employees and their families donated 76 pairs of
shoes.

ing for explosives, it could take dogs only

two hours, according to Johnson. The
dogs never wrong, he said.
The program expenses include the purchase of the canines, kennels, leads, food,
training and equipment. Some of the more
expensive purchases are trucks that monitor
the temperature when dogs are inside. But,
according to Johnson, federal grants for
bomb detecting dogs have been cut
significantly.
To help defray the program expenses,
corporate and individual pledges are being
accepted by mail and online.
Since its launch last month, the Boomer
Memorial Fund has raised over $4,000.
However, most of the donations were
accepted by the department in person, as
only $50 has been raised online.
I think some people still like that personal let me stop by, give them the check
and say thank you for your service,
Johnson said. I didnt realize how many
people truly appreciated what Boomer
didHe had a huge impact on this county.
While the goal online is $10,000, the
department will continue to accept donations after reaching it.
Any help we can get, we appreciate,
said Johnson. I

Johnson and his family.

He was a once-in-a-lifetime
dog, Johnson said.
Cumberland Countys K-9
unit originally started in 2009
under the direction of Sheriff
Robert A. Austino. Johnson was
selected to be the first dog handler in the program.
Boomer represented the canine unit at
local schools and community events.
Johnson recounted bringing Boomer to one
school where some children were afraid of
dogs. Boomer knew those children were
scared, so he put his head down when they
came close. The majority of those students
overcame their fear, and petted him.
He had that effect on people, Johnson
said.
Boomer passed away from cancer in
March at the age of nine. In his memory,
Freeholders Darlene Barber and Carol
Musso, along with assistant county business
administrator Kim Wood, launched the
Boomer Memorial Fund to support
Cumberland Countys K9 program.
Boomer played an important role in
school education and safety in our area,
Barber explained. Now were paying
tribute to him.
In October, Johnson received an Award of
Valor for Individual Meritorious Community
Service at the National Liberty Museum in
Philadelphia on behalf of the late Boomer.
The award isnt for me, it was for
Boomer, Johnson said. Im just the handler. The dog does all the work.
This past August, Johnson began training
with Cita, a female two-year-old Dutch
Shepard. Compared to Boomer, who Johnson
recalled as constantly working, Cita loves to
run, play, be held, and lick peoples faces.
The sheriffs department currently has
two dogs on the job: Krypto, who is trained
in explosives detection and patrolling, and
Loki, a narcotics detection dog. However,
the two dogs are getting up in age. Three
more dogs will start their service after
trainingCita, as well as two dogs who will
begin training in March.
Bomb detection dogs like Cita and the
late Boomer are trained to sniff out explosives, and calmly sit at the site to be
searched. It takes about 14 weeks for a dog
to be trained in bomb detection, according
to Johnson. Johnson and Cita currently go
to training at the Salem County Sheriffs
Office two days a week after work.
Cumberland County Sheriff Robert
Austino reported that Cumberland Countys
canines are trained to search areas and run
faster than officers.
Dogs save a lot of tax dollars just by
working, Johnson said. Whereas it could
take humans an entire day to search a build-

I Jersey Reflections

{ BY VINCE FARINACCIO }

Greenback Party
Landis was likely drawn to the Greenback Partys
growth, as well as its alignment with the ideals of
farmers and women suffragists.

wo years after his 1876 murder

trial, Vinelands founder Charles
K. Landis busied himself with a
number of activities to occupy
his time until his decision to establish Sea
Isle City became the focus of his attention.
One of the things that captured his attention in 1878 was the local efforts of the
Greenback Party and its convention. Landis
made room in his schedule not only to
attend meetings but to lecture and apply
his legal skills to this groups cause.
This national political organization
took its name from the term for the paper
money issued by the North during the
Civil War that was not backed by the gold
standard. The Greenback Party had an
aversion to the gold standard because it
was controlled by banks and not the
federal government, thereby giving an
advantage to wealthy industrialists over
common laborers.
The passage of the Resumption Act in
1875, which returned things to a goldbacked currency, posed a threat to the
organization, but it managed to survive
the change.
The movement had been established in
1873 by mostly farmers in pursuit of
reform. Within a few years, according to
online sources, the rise of national strikes,
which prompted the intervention of federal
troops in 1877, convinced laborers from
other occupations to join the organization
in its quest for reform. The result was a
growing number of Greenback Party candidates entering local governments in
mining communities and industrial areas.
The late 1870s would witness the
groups peak when it succeeded in placing
14 and then 21 members in Congress,
including one from New Jersey, and provided backing for a presidential candidate.
According to Elizabeth Sanders Roots of
Reform: Farmers, Workers, and the
American State, 1877-1917, the year 1878
proved to be the electoral high point for
the Greenback Movement
Landis might have been drawn to the
Greenback Partys growth, but it wouldnt
have been the only thing that captured his
attention. As a champion of the farmer, he
would have seen the movement as a means
of providing agricultural laborers with the
opportunity to climb above debt by championing a currency not backed by the gold

that gave bankers a share of the wealth.

Its not surprising that the tenets of the
newly christened Greenback-Labor Party
matched those of the National Grange of
the Order of Patrons of Husbandry, also
known simply as the Grange, the agrarian
organization associated with editor Uri
Carruth, who published its local newspaper in the early 1870s. But the interests of
the farmer werent the only concerns that
linked the two organizations. Both groups
were outspoken proponents of womens
suffrage.
Sources identify that the GreenbackLabor Party also favored an eight-hour
workday and decried the use of state and
federal suppression in the case of union
strikes. It also did not approve of speculators who bought unbacked currency at a
deflated cost with gold-backed notes and
then solicited Congress to allow them to
redeem it for a profit.
On August 25, 1878, Landis sought to
repeal the Resumption Act by writing resolutions for the Greenback Convention.
The campaign would be pursued vigorously
over the following year to no avail. On the
afternoon of September 12, while attending
the local Greenback Convention, he took
note that railroad corporations had the
influence to have voted down every resolution against them. They will always own
the conventions I fear.
Despite corporate leverage, he continued to apply himself to the cause, reading
The Advocate, a Greenback-Labor Party
publication that he proclaimed was full
of information, and expanding his
research into the partys stance with a
book about money written by one of the
organizations members along with a
series of pamphlets and books dealing
with the Greenback question. By October 3,
he was prepared to deliver an address to
an audience of substantial size on the
Greenback-Labor issues.
But Landis involvement with the movement of the Greenback-Labor Party was,
like the organization itself, short-lived.
The party would eventually dissolve in the
late 1880s, its efforts unproductive and its
Congressional candidates unsuccessful.
During its final decade, the groups numbers diminished and interest waned. By
then Landis political fervor had been
replaced by a series of other projects. I

On The Ave in the next year.

The Landis Theater has become the
Bay Atlantic Symphonys new
Cumberland County performing home,
adding to the momentum that icon of The
Ave is gaining as it approaches its 80th
anniversary next March.
Across the street, the Landis Square
project is on its way to becoming a reality,
bringing 78 affordable units for seniors
and the disabled, plus about 8,000 square
feet of street-level retail space to The
Aves eastern gateway.
The overarching initiative that ties all
of this together is our rebranding initiative that was launched with a gala branding party. It involves a new logo, a new
website, new promotional material, and
new signs that will go up at the eastern
and western gateways to The Ave.
These are just some of the developments that have taken place. This is in
addition to our regular programs and
eventsour A Taste of Vineland &
Volunteer Recognition Event, Volunteer
Recognition Event, Dine On The Ave,
Cruise Down Memory Lane, Fall and
Spring Clean-Up/Planting Days, and the
Holiday Parade.
Taking a look to next year, well expand
our Outdoor Dining program, move forward with a tree-planting program in the
spring, expanding our Wedding Weekend
into a bridal show, create a sponsorship
program for our events, and other initiativesincluding plans for a food truck
event, a 5K race, and more.
Its going to be an exciting time on The
Ave and we want you to join us!
***
Make The Ave your destination for your
holiday shopping needs, as well as for fun
all year round. Save money on gasoline,
avoid the long lines at the big-box stores,
malls, and shopping centersand also
enjoy the events we have in town. I

arly on in my term as Executive

Director of Main Street
Vineland, I said that we would
be entering a year of planning
for an aggressive agenda I had in store.
That year of planning is now becoming
the year of execution and we, in Main
Street Vineland, look forward to a dynamic year of major programs and initiatives
on The Ave.
We already can cite quite a few milestones of which we can be proud, even
while we were planning for the future. I
just want to cite a few examples.
Not too long after I came on board, we
had a very successful multi-day NJ-350
celebration, with a pop-up store at the
Main Street Vineland office and a week of
exciting events around The Ave. We
received recognition for our achievement
and Im still proud of what we were able
to come together and do.
We have also initiated some very exciting programs and events that are reaping
dividends for our downtown and the
future.
We had the honor of hosting one of
Main Street New Jerseys Downtown
Institutes, which brought representatives
from cities and towns throughout the
state to Vineland to see what we have to
offer and the work were doing.
Broker tours have helped to match
tenants with available properties and have
brought exciting new businesses to The
AveMauros On The Ave being a major
case in point.
Fourth Fridays have brought activity
downtown each month and, through
them, we have made use of our miniparks. We want to expand the use of the
mini-parksa great downtown assetin
the next year.
Our Merchant Meet-and-Greets
every other month have allowed our businesses to showcase themselves for their
fellow merchants and the public.
We look forward to expanding the
Cash Assaults we have had into a partnership with the Greater Vineland Chamber
of Commerce and their Cash Mobs. We
will join them in sponsoring a few of them

Local Genesis Tribute Takes

Landis Stage
If youre a fan of the prog-rock band
Genesisor a fan of music at all
you have one last chance to catch
the Genesis Show, an area-based
tribute act, before the end of 2016.
The Philadelphia/South Jersey-based
Genesis tribute band performs at the
Landis Theater in Vineland on Friday,
Dec, 30, for a special re-creation of
the opening night show of Genesis
1977 tour. Originally performed at the
Rainbow Theatre in London, England,
this was the first show to feature
Chester Thomson on the drums and
Phil Collins as frontman.
The Genesis Shows guitarist Stephen
McQuaid (pictured) says the band
has been working on the show for a
while. We have actually been working on this show for over three years, says McQuaid, one of the three band members from Vineland. We have done three shows so far [and] this upcoming one
will be our fouth.
The bands first concert was held last April, also at the Landis Theater, but the
Dec. 30 show will be different, says McQuaid.
This will be our first time playing this setlist and show, he says. We wanted to
do it as close to the 40th anniversary as possible.
The Genesis Show plays note for note renditions of the songs from late 70s-era
Genesis, along with an incredible light show and visuals using much of the vintage equipment that Genesis used, according to the bands Facebook page. The
Genesis Show also has two drummers (Jeff Giuliani and Vince Corda) in order to
deliver all the power that Genesis did in their heyday.
While the group has always focussed on the Phil Collins era of the band's catalogue, celebrating the 40th anniversary of Genesis 77 Wind & Wuthering World
Tour (captured on the live Seconds Out album) allows for the five-piece to paint a
picture of what Genesis sounded like on the first night of this important period in
the bands history.
Fans can expect a faithful recreation of that show even down to many of the
same lighting cues and effects used by Genesis, adds McQuaid, who owns CMC
Guitars in Vineland. We may not look like them physically but we sound like they
did in 1977 and the show is designed to make you feel like you are there.

Jeff has a similar stage persona to Phil Collins, adds McQuaid. When Peter
Gabriel was the lead singer he was more like the deep and dark brooding mysterious traveler that was passing through. He would dress up in elaborate costumes
and personas. Phil was the opposite of that. He was more of your buddy next
door. He was the lighthearted joker on stage. So we bring that same vibe to the
show.

This will probably be the last show in the area until sometime late next year, he
says. We are taking our show on the road to other states.

hen we were
kids, Mom
would take
my sister Linda and me
to the big department stores in
Philadelphia to shop for gifts and to see the
Christmas decorations. Gimbels and Lit
Brothers were great, but John Wanamakers
was the promised land. As you walked in
the front door, a huge Golden Eagle greeted
you decked out in holiday splendor and
twinkling lightssilver and gold were
everywhere. The first floor was full of individual counters with all kinds of goods
from jewelry to cosmetics, hats and gloves,
perfume and in a separate section, they
even had a specialty food market. Mom
would shuffle us through the throng of
shoppers to the elevators to go up to
Santas workshop where Linda and I would
both sit on the big guys lap for a picture.
We still have those pictures.
Every year mom would announce at the
beginning of November, that she wasnt
going to send Christmas cards this year.
Linda and I would just look at each other
and Dad would hide a chuckle, because we
all knew that as soon as the cards starting
coming in from friends and relatives, that
Mom would rush out to the drugstore for a
box of cards and send everyone who sent
her one a card in return. We went through
this every year and it wasnt because she
was mean-spirited or didnt have the money
and to be honest, I have no idea whyI
guess it was just one of our family traditions!
Another holiday tradition was Moms
big pork roast with onion gravy, sauerkraut,
mashed potatoes and various vegetables on
