Driving for Success at the 2016 Annual Convention

S eptember 14-17
By Bill Hornsby, 2016 Program Committee Chair, Habasit America

he theme of this years Convention is Driving for Success. We all want to be successful in our professional
and personal lives and this years event will provide opportunities to advance in both. The Program Committee has put
together a Convention with a little something for everyone in the
cool urban setting of Indianapolis.
Thursday has been dubbed Networking Day with a number of
options including: morning and afternoon seminars from University of Innovative Distributor speakers, tennis or other more casual networking opportunities with NIBA friends such as Segway
tours, Kiss the Bricks tour of the Motor Speedway, Escape Room,
Brew Bus (local micro brewery tours) or the Pickled Pedaler. Of
course the NIBA Golf outing will again be one of the highlights
of the day and will be held at the Brickyard Crossing which has
four holes inside the racing track and the other fourteen adjacent
to it.
NIBA welcomes former Racing Champion Derek Daly as the
keynote speaker who will help us understand the difference
between going fast and being fast within our companies. He
will stick around for an afternoon session where he will drill
down on implementation of the points made during the morning
session. There will also be an alternative afternoon session from
the UID.
The Next Gen After-Hours gathering that started last year is back
by popular demand. This year, networking for the group will be
expanded to include an exclusive afternoon speaker from the
UID who will be discussing The Foundations of Leadership.
We are also holding a Welcome Reception for spouses so they
will have an opportunity to get to know each other and make
plans to do some of the tours previously mentioned or other
unique events available. Since Indy is within driving distance
for many in our group, we encourage you to bring your spouses
to join in the activities and/or additional people within your

opportunities
and the Convention Expo which
is always one of the
highlights. This year the Board has approved test marketing the
concept of allowing Distributor / Fabricators, who meet established criteria for sales to distribution, to exhibit at the Expo, so
we expect even more exhibitors than last year.

DRIVING FOR SUCCESS

Driving is an active word, and speaking of active, the Committee has planned an exciting opening ceremony at the Dallara
Indy Car Factory where there will be race simulators, pit crew
challenge, opportunities to take a ride in a street legal Indy or
NASCAR vehicle as well as photo ops with a Indy Show Car
decked out with NIBA and sponsors logos. The closing evening
will conclude with a short walk from the JW, just across the
street to an amphitheater in White River State Park, to enjoy the
music of Josh Kaufman who is a local Indy artist and winner of
Season 6 of The Voice.
We are all excited about the Convention and look forward to
seeing everyone in Indy in September. Heres to working hard
and playing hard!

Letter from the President

id-year is rapidly approaching and I am amazed by how quickly 2016 is

moving. The NIBA committees have been working feverishly on initiatives that will continue to enhance the value to association membership. The Edu/Tech Committee recently completed its first-ever offering of the
Steel Cable Splice School. All indications say the school was a huge success. The
Membership Committee has ensured our membership remains solid through the
renewal process and continues to review new applicants. The Products & Services
Committee has just completed the review of submittals for the Memorial and the
Presidential Scholarships. Recipient notifications are in process and will be formally recognized at the Annual Convention.

Tom Pientok,
2016 NIBA President

The Program Committee is putting the finishing touches on what promises to be

another fantastic convention. The JW Marriott in Indianapolis will be home to this
years convention. The theme, Drive for Success, couldnt be more fitting for
keynote speaker, former Indy car driver, Derek Daly. The convention commences
on September 14th with the annual Dine Around and runs through the closing
event on Saturday, September 17th. I am looking forward to another memorable
and productive Annual Convention.
This summer, a small group of NIBA members will meet in Wisconsin to establish
the strategic plan for next three year time horizon. The dynamics of the industry
continue to evolve and we must establish a long-term goals for the association in
order to keep NIBA relevant and of value to its members. As the industry changes,
we need to work to make sure NIBA makes any necessary changes to best serve
membership. I am confident the efforts of this team will result in positive initiatives to drive new products, services and experiences that will benefit NIBA membership. I am excited to be able to participate in this process.

Nylon Core/Aramid Belts in the Folded Carton Industry

By Tom Archer, Vaughn Belting Resources Inc, 2016 Education/Technical Committee
When we think of lightweight belting, what typically comes
to mind is conveyor belting with a tension rating of 150
lbs. PIW and under. These include the European style PVC,
urethane, and many domestic belts.
A category of lightweight belting that does not get as much
attention is the nylon core/aramid fabric belts, which have
applications for both conveying and power transmission.
This article addresses these often overshadowed belts and
their use in the folded carton industry, which manufactures
cartons used for cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, beverage,
and many foods packaging, etc. Here, I will provide a brief
explanation of each stage of the process: (1) sheeting, (2)
printing, (3) die-cutting, and finally (4) folding/gluing.
The sheeter, the first stage, takes large rolls of paper and
cuts them into sheets. After being cut, narrow belts carry
these sheets to the end of the machine to be palletized.
The number of belts, vulcanized endless on the machine,
will vary from 20 to well over 125. Belts used in this
application are thin nylon core, aramid fabric, and quick
melt thermoplastic. Usually, but not always, they run on a
common shaft and all the belts are replaced at one time.
The second stage is the press section, where the sheets are
printed, coated, and dried. Some common presses used in
this process are manufactured by Man Roland and Hewlett
Packard. The Man Roland press has four rubber covered
nylon style perforated infeed belts 80 mm wide and must be
vulcanized endless on the machine. The Hewlett Packard
press, on the other hand, has both infeed and outfeed belts,
using nylon style belts and PVC thermoplastic.
The printed sheets proceed to the die cutter where they are
stamped to the required shape. Bobst die cutters use four
nylon style infeed belts and a wide 2 ply PVC thermoplastic
belt for waste.
The final stage is the folder/gluer process where the cartons
are, you guessed it, folded and glued. Some of the leading
manufacturers of folder/gluers include Bobst, Jagenenburg,
International, Signature, Vega, Masterworks and Post. The
flat die cut cartons are stacked and delivered to the folding
section using feed belts, which are endless. While these
belts have traditionally been rubber covered and ground

Belt Line June 2016

to a consistent thickness, urethane foam covered feed belts

are being used more frequently. There are four common
carcasses used for feed belts: woven endless, nylon core
skived endless, mandrel made, and timing belts. Do note that
there are different rubber compounds and durometers being
used in this process. The lower the durometer of the rubber,
the higher the coefficient of friction, but they tend to wear
faster. Also, the carton material and coatings have to be
taken into consideration when selecting feed belts.
Between the feed section and the compression section, the
cartons are carried on rubber covered nylon core, aramid
fabric, or polyester fabric reinforced belts. The nylon core,
which is supplied endless, is skived and the latter two belts
are finger spliced. Some machines produce over a 100,000
cartons per hour, so these belts receive much abuse from
small pulleys, reverse flexing, and high speeds. With some
exceptions, their widths range from 25-38 mm and can
exceed 10,000 mm in length. Though thicknesses consist
of 3, 4, 5, and 6 mm, with two classes of nylons available,
the .5 mm thick nylon or 10 N/mm class is most commonly
used. There are instances where variables like carton
material and speed might cause excessive elongation of the
belt. Specifically, if the belt is 8500 mm or longer, it is best
to err on the side of caution and upgrade to the stronger belt,
one with a .75 mm nylon thickness or strength of a 14 N/
mm class. As with feed belts, different rubber compounds are
used, which directly affects carton output. Another important
factor in this process is ensuring that the splice is straight and
has a uniform thickness.
The final section of the folder/gluer process is the
compression section, which is comprised of two wide
thermoplastic conveyor belts running on top of one another.
These belts apply pressure on the carton while the glue sets
up. From this section, the cartons are packed and prepared
for delivery.
The process I have discussed above is typical of a folding
box plant, however, there are many other plants that may
use other equipment, which would then require different
processes. Regardless, one thing they all have in common is
that there is good, profitable business to be earned.

NIBA Memorial Scholarships Winners

By Bo Fisher, 2016 Products & Services Committee, Maxi-Lift Inc

IBA received 71 applications for the Memorial

Scholarship this year. The Products & Services
committee members were extremely impressed by
the level of community involvement and leadership skills
by these students. Ten $2,000 education scholarships were
awarded.
The 2016 Memorial Scholarship winners are: Jessica C.
Broussard, True DeMille, Robert H. Fisher, III, Stephanie
Michelle Keith, Alexis Lexi Labossiere, Sarah Mayer, Ariella
Ponikvar, Freddy Rodriguez, Jared Sherrick and Austin Walter.
Jessica C. Broussard of Thorsby, Alabama
applied through Randall Broussard of
Applied Industrial Technologies and
will be attending Auburn University.
Jessicas passion for community service
comes from her experiences following a
devastating tornado in northern Alabama.
She volunteered along with her church to
restore homes and serve food to those in need. She says In
that moment I knew that what I had done that day impacted
the lives of an entire family for the good of mankind, and
helping them get back onto their feet meant more than
sleeping in an extra hour or so on a Saturday morning, or
getting to catch up with the latest news on social media, or
anything else that was going on in the world.
True DeMille of Orem, Utah applied
through Scott Furner of LewisGoetz and
will be attending Utah Valley University.
True was inspired by his parents own spirit
of kindness to volunteer for mission work
halfway around the world in South Korea.
He says Seeing the example of my parents
serve in the community helped me to
want to do my best to serve a community halfway across the
world.
Robert H. Fisher, III of Tampa, Florida
applied through Robert H. Fisher, Jr. of
Rubber & Accessories Inc and will be
attending University of Florida. Robert
became a volunteer at the local retirement
community after seeing how few visitors
some of the residents received. He found
the experience richly rewarding: They
all had incredible stories. Whether it was how they came to
America, fought in the war or were in a famous jazz band.

Stephanie Michelle Keith of Valencia,

California applied through Thomas Keith of
ContiTech - NAFTA and will be attending
University of Oregon. Stephanie believes
in turning her education into action.
After taking an Advanced Placement
Environmental Sciences course, she
participated in local beach cleanups and
became active in activities to reduce oil dependence. She
says We have the opportunity to take what we have learned
from history, science, and critical thinking and apply our
knowledge to attack our most significant problems.
Alexis Lexi Labossiere of Waltham,
Massachusetts applied through Robert
Labossiere of Colmar Belting Company
Inc and will be attending Endicott
College. Lexi developed a love of for
helping people while volunteering in her
community, which led to her decision to
pursue a career as a Physicians Assistant.
She says, Performing community service
has transformed me into this new chapter of my life in
preparing me for the medical career and helping others for
the rest of my life.
Sarah Mayer of Cincinnati, Ohio applied
through Edward Mayer of Thaman Rubber
Company and will be attending the
University of Cincinnati. Sarah seeks an
education of the heart and the mind.
She says In school I learn skills for the
workplace, but when I serve others I
am able to utilize those skills and grow
my values as well. I now know that I want to work for a
company that values community service and benefits others.
Ariella Ponikvar of Brecksville, Ohio
applied through Robert Jaite of Nitta
Corporation of America and will be
attending Cleveland State University. For
five years, Ariella has spent her Saturday
mornings leading her communitys youth
soccer program. She says My ultimate
goal is to combine my passions for soccer
and teaching to launch an after-school program that will
teach children how to be productive citizens through the
lessons of sports. While this goal is ambitious, I am confident
that through my education I will grow into a leader and will
make a real impact in my community.

Freddy Rodriguez of Vancouver,
Washington applied through Freddy
G. Rodriguez of Rubber & Plastics Inc
and will be attending Oregon State
University. Freddy places great value on
higher education and sees it as the key
to unlocking future success. He says,
Going to college gives people a better
understanding on how to solve issues and prepare for a
leadership position. With that knowledge, I wish to be more
of a mediator for all people within my community and to
lead programs that can inspire the younger generation to
succeed.
Jared Sherrick of Troy, Ohio applied
through Ronald Sherrick of CBT and will
be attending Ohio State University. For
Jareds Eagle Project, he led a team of
volunteers in a beautification process for
a local non-profits facilities, including

enabling them to kick off their recycling program. He says

of his experiences, To touch a life does not always require
amazing projects. Sometimes a kind word, or even just a
smile can make all the difference in someones life. Although
I will soon enter a new chapter in my life, I want my actions
and words to speak for my genuine love of
all people.
Austin Walter of Marion, Iowa applied
through Randall Walter of Apache Inc and
will be attending Northwestern University.
Austin feels that community service
imbues his education with greater purpose.
He says, Service was integral because it
kept me grounded in why to teach and why it is important for
everyone to learn. It has built in me a long-term commitment
that goes beyond simply giving five dollars whenever my
conscience is bothered.

Endless Training Expanded HD Splice Seminar a Success

By Dick McConnell, Flexco, NIBA Trainer
The Technical and Education committee, utilizing the existing training resources, expanded this years HD splice school.
With the focus on being a more complete resource for todays
demands on belt splice operation, the class was offered in two
segments.
The traditional HD fabric vulcanized and mechanical fastener
training, began on Monday April 4th. This pro-active, hands on
seminar was attended by 16 active NIBA member employees
from a cross section of belt service personnel. Through the first
two days, detailed instruction and hands on activity covered
the best practices of both traditional step splicing and the more
specialized finger splicing. After making the samples, the class
got to visualize the quality of their own splice results through
standardized adhesion testing. This portion of the splice training
was rounded off with discussion on the application and selection of mechanical belt fasteners.

For the second half of the

week of April 4th, there
was an optional training
for steel cable belt splicing. This initial offering
provided a somewhat rare
opportunity for the recipients to receive hands
on instruction on the best
practices geared toward
consideration of the
unique demands placed
on steel cord splices. The
key points were successfully articulated during the
classroom portion. In the
actual belt shop sample
splicing activity, the
critical details to meet operational demands were successfully
exercised.
The Technical and Education committee would like to thank
the board for their support in expanding the HD splice school
training. This first run seminar including the steel cord splice
training has provided a platform upon which future training can
be standardized to cover all current popular splicing options.
Special thanks to Almex Group for providing the physical
resources to assure the success of the 2016 HD Splice School.
And thanks to Continental Rubber, R K Rubber, and Flexco for
their support of this annual event.
