Name: Emily LaRue Crothers

PLANNING FOR TEACHING
Content: Mathematics
Grade: Sixth
Title of Lesson: Dividing fractions
Common Core Standard: 6.NS.1: Interpret and compute quotients of fractions, and
solve word problems involving division of fractions by fractions, e.g., by using visual
fraction models and equations to represent the problem.
Essential Skills/Knowledge:
Students will have the . . .
Ability to explore the concept that division breaks quantities into groups.
Ability to emphasize that when dividing by a value that is less than one, the
quotient is greater than the dividend.
Ability to explore both the measurement concept and the partition concept of
division of fractions.
Ability to introduce the fact that the measurement concept uses repeated
subtraction or equal groups.
Ability to explore the common denominator algorithm as a method of repeated
subtraction.
Knowledge of partition concept focuses on How much is one?
a c a d ad
= =
Knowledge of algorithm b d b c bc (invert and multiply) is an extension of
the partition concept.
TPACK:
Knowledge of algorithm

a c a d ad
= =
b d b c bc

(invert and multiply) is an extension of

the partition concept. (C)

A mix of direct instruction and question/answer. (P/C)
Technology plays a role in reinforcement in the lesson. (P/C/T)
Presentation of lesson on PowerPoint.
Technology Integration:
Use the smart bored to project my PowerPoint with student objectives and
instructions
The Smart bored will also be used for student response

TEACHING THE LESSON
Introducing the Lesson:
Begin by having a student read the lesson objectives
Then I will move on to the drill.
Drill (5-10 min.):
We will review together multiplying factions.
This is a review of the previous days concept that directly connects to the new content
to be learned.
Plans for Differentiation:
The student instructions will be both orally explained as well as in text either on the
power point or on worksheets.
Students will also be encouraged to ask a neighbor for assistance. This builds
collaborative skills and it has been proven students learn better from other
students.
There will be opportunities throw-out the lesson for students to share their thinking
on the smart bored
Procedures for teaching the Content:
1) After the drill has been completed I will display a division of fractions problem on the
smart bored.
2) I will ask questions like:
a. What is another way we could write out this problem?
b. What is your first instinct to how solve this problem?
3) After we have gone through possible ways to solve this problem I will go on to guide
the students with my questioning that you will multiply by the reciprocal of the
second fraction.
4) Hopefully through all of this questioning they may see another method on how to
solve these problems which is to stack the fractions and the product of the
numerator of the dividend and the denominator of the divisor will become the
numerator of the solution and the product of the denominator of the dividend and
the numerator of the divisor will become the denominator of the solution.
5) Next they will complete 7 out of 10 problems on a worksheet and then students will
demonstrate their work to the class.
6) From here we will read together a word problem. Each student will have a copy to
work with.
7) After we decode and solve the word problem together the students will work in

small groups to solve 2 of 4 word problems.

8) They will present their work to the class using the Elmo.
Summary and Lesson Closure:

We will revisit the objectives and discuss if we were successful of not.

There will be and exit ticket with two simple fraction division and one word problem.
The homework for the students would be to finish the word problem worksheet.
The next class we will be learning how to divide more complex number
And begin adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions

Formative Assessment:
This is represented by the exit ticket.
Also by the drill at the beginning of the next class.
Extension of learning:
The rest of the word problems will be the homework
Students will also be encouraged to use math games to practice their skills.
