Welcome
Crane Institute of America Certification (CIC) issues NCCA accredited operator certifications for
mobile cranes (five type and capacity levels), articulating boom cranes, digger derrick cranes,
and service/mechanic truck cranes. Certifications are also issued for, riggers, signalpersons and
master riggers. CIC meets OSHAs current requirements for crane operator certification by type
and capacity and OSHAs rigger and signalperson qualification requirements. Written exams are
available in both English and Spanish.
There are other choices when it comes to selecting a crane operator certification organizations.
So, why should someone pick CIC? Here are a few reasons:
p CIC is recognized by OSHA and is accredited by NCCA.
p Our written and practical exams are real-world and realistic.
p You only have to take one practical exam for up to five type and capacity levels of certification.
p We dont hide our fees and we have the best customer service.
These are just a few reasons why we are becoming known as The Standard in the industry for
crane operator, rigger and signal person certifications.
Heres what industry professionals say about CIC:
OSHA is now requiring crane operators to be certified by 2017. CIC is the best option Ive found
for nationally accredited certifications by type and capacity, says Tony Brown, Safety Consultant.

Scheduling Exams
CIC recommends that candidates schedule exams at least 4 weeks in advance. However, candidates
may register in as little as 7 days in advance without a rush fee. Registration or rescheduling in

training for accreditation nor does it provide a course of study that leads to operator certification.
CIC has no legal or financial or other obligation to organizations it recognizes for training options.

safe crane operation and test preparation.

Safety
A candidate will be automatically disqualified if, at the judgment of the examiner, the candidate
operates the crane in an unsafe manner during familiarization or the exam. Examples of unsafe
operation include the following:
Two blocking the crane
Hit crane with any part of the load
Uncontrolled or reckless operation
Action dangerous to personnel or equipment.

Exam Delays Due to Weather or Equipment Problems

If the anemometer indicates that wind speeds exceed 20 mph immediately before or during a
Practical Exam, the examiner delays the exam until wind speeds are below 20 mph.
Exams may not start until 30 minutes past official local sunrise at the exam location. Exam steps
must be completed 30 minutes prior to official local sunset.
Exams will not start, or will immediately stop, if thunder is heard within 30 seconds of lightning. In
the event of a thunderstorm, exams may start, or resume, a minimum of 30 minutes after the last
audible thunder.
Exams will not start, or will immediately stop, if precipitation is strong enough to obstruct the
candidates ability to see all materials within the course.
If any weather conditions require the examiner to stop the exam before the candidate completes
it but the exam can be completed on the same day, the examiner
Restarts the candidate at the beginning of the task that was in-progress when the examiner
stopped the exam
Allows the candidate the same amount of time, 15 minutes, to become familiar again with the
crane and tasks before restarting the exam.
If weather conditions dictate that the candidate will not be able to start or safely complete the
exam on the day registered, the candidate and Practical Exam Site Coordinator reschedule the
exam at the earliest convenience at no additional fee. If the Practical Exam Site Coordinator
cannot reasonably accommodate the candidate, the coordinator must contact CIC. At that point,
the candidate may reschedule a new exam on the CIC web site with no additional fee. On the new
exam day, the candidate will start the testing process from the beginning.

the beginning. No credit is given for any exams taken previously.
Certified operators can log onto the CIC website (www.CICert.com) to register and purchase Recertification Exams, or contact CIC Customer Service for assistance at 844-546-3362 or email at
help@CICert.com.

CIC Certified Operator Re-Certification Requirements

Complete the Hours Verification Form and email it to help@CICert.com.
Provide a government-issued photographic identification (passport, drivers license, etc.).
Comply with and sign the Code of Ethics and Substance Abuse Policies. These forms are
emailed to operator from CIC Customer Service and also provided at testing.

(operation, shift inspection, set-up, assembly/disassembly, travel, training) over the previous
five years on the highest crane type and capacity level which the operator is applying for. Less
than 1,000 hours will require that a practical operating exam be taken for CIC Certification(s)
applied for.
Any unsafe crane operation which results in the following, accidents or incidents resulting
in property damage, personnel injury or death to personnel, intoxication, substance abuse,
disciplinary action, etc., will require that the operator complete an Incident/Accident Report

The operator must document at least 1,000 hours of safe operation as the designated operator
(operation, shift inspection, set-up, assembly/disassembly, traveling, training) over the previous
five (5) years comparable to the CIC Certification(s) which the operator is applying for (See
Hours of Verification Form). An operator that cannot document at least 1,000 hours will be
required to take a practical operating exam applicable to the CIC Certification(s) applied for.
Any unsafe crane operation which results in the following, accidents or incidents reulting
in property damage, personnel injury or death to personnel, intoxication, substance abuse,
disciplinary action, etc., will require that the operator complete an Incident/Accident Report
which will be reviewed by the Quality Review Assurance Board for approval or disapproval of
application.
The operator must pass the type and capacity re-certification written exam(s) corresponding
to the Non-CIC Certification(s) checked. Please refer to the charts below. Operators may add
additional certification(s) by taking applicable written exam(s) and a practical exam, if required.

photos can be emailed to help@CICert.com. Photographs may be mailed to CIC at P.O. Box
2049, Villa Rica, Georgia 30180.
Operators who recertify less than one year before their certification expires receive a certification
date that extends five years from the date of original certification.
Re-certification must be attained before the operators original certification expires. If an operator
fails to pass exams in two (2) attempts, CIC recommends that the operator wait at least 30 days
before taking the exam again.
Some states and cities may have additional requirements. For example, the state of Pennsylvania
requires that a practical exam be conducted for mobile cranes with Fixed Control Stations,
Rotating Control Stations and Lattice Boom Cranes. Before applying for re-certification with
CIC, check the requirements for your state or municipality.

Determination of Passing Scores for Written Exams

CIC exams are criterion-referenced exams. This means that pre-determined cut-off scores must
be reached or exceeded in order for an examinee to pass. This pre-determined score is established
by experts in the crane and testing industry.
The passing scores for each exam are found in the chart below. Scoring has no relation to the
performance of other examinees; therefore everyone who takes the exam may pass based on
their own performance.

Scoring Written Exams

Our testing partner, Assessment Systems, scores and records all exams, written and practical.
Assessment Systems sends an email, with exam score, within 10 business days of receipt and
immediately for online written exams. Candidates, or the coordinator who registered them on their
behalf, may also log in to their account on CICs website and check the status of exams taken.

Determination of Passing Scores for

Practical Operating Exams
Scoring
Scoring takes into consideration: load control, time to complete tasks, and knowledge required for
operating a crane safely. The following challenges are measured accordingly:
Accuracy and depth perception 35%
Hand signals 16%
Ability to control a load 50%
Securing the crane 4%
Some challenges are timed. The less time it takes to complete the timed challenges the better the
score.

Reporting
Practical Operating Exams are scored on a straight Pass/Fail basis by Assessment Systems. The
examiner will not be able to provide feedback on your performance. However, your result will be
sent to you via email within 10 days of completing the exam unless a quick score is requested
at additional cost.

Content Outline for Practical Operating Examinations

Skills Tested Crane Types
The Practical Operating Exam measures the basic skills needed to safely operate a crane in a
controlled fashion. It does not indicate the ability to operate any crane in any situation.
Practical Operating Exams may be conducted using any mobile crane as long as it is capable of
achieving the required boom length for the practical operating exam being conducted.
The practical exam measures the following skills:
Operating controls to raise and lower the load
Operating controls to swing boom
Operating controls to raise and lower the boom
Ability to control the load
Shift inspection
Following hand signals
Securing the crane

Description of Challenge
Crane Familiarization
You will be given 15 minutes to familiarize yourself with the crane used for the exam.
You may view any component of the crane or operate the crane to obtain the feel of its
operation, with the following exceptions:
Do not travel the crane or adjust outriggers, if any.
Do not telescope the boom.
The brakes and LMI are set according to OEM standards.
At the end of the familiarization period, you will be asked to sign your examination form and
indicate whether the crane is operating satisfactorily and you wish to take your exam. If you
are not ready to take the exam at the end of the 15-minute time, the exam will be cancelled.

Challenge One - Measures Candidates Accuracy and Depth Perception

The first task requires you to place the headache ball into a drum marked with a 1.
This is a timed task.
The task is to move the headache ball from the Start Point and place the entire headache ball
to the wedge socket, under control, into drum 1.
Do not move drum 1. Do not hit or move any other part of the course with any part of the hook
or ball.
The second task is similar, requiring you to place the headache ball into a different drum marked
with a 2.
This is also a timed task.
The task is to move the headache ball from Drum 1 and to place the entire headache ball to
the wedge socket, under control, into Drum 2.
Do not move drum 2. Do not hit or move any other part of the course with any part of the hook
or ball.

Challenge Two - Measures Candidates Ability to Follow Hand-Signals

This challenge requires you to follow the examiners hand signals. You will be given 12 hand
signals, and you are required follow them while keeping the headache ball under control at all
times.

Challenge Three - Measures Candidates Ability to Control a Load

This task requires you to pick-up a load and move it through an obstacle course in the specific
order shown and place it in a designated spot.
This is a timed activity.
The load must be controlled in terms of height off the ground and clearance of obstacles.
To finish, the load needs to be placed at the designated spot.

Substance Abuse Policy

Operators seeking certification who sign the Code of Ethics Policy also agree to avoid substance
abuse. In doing so, operators agree to the following:
Never using alcohol or illegal drugs while at work or on any work/job site
Never working while under the influence of alcohol or an illegal drug or substance
Never engaging in the unlawful manufacture, distribution, sale, or possession of illegal drugs
in the workplace
Never abusing prescription drugs
Never operating cranes if taking a prescription drug, if the label, or attending physician,
recommends not driving or operating machinery. However, operators may operate a crane
and take the prescribed medication without an adverse effect on maintaining certification,
when, and if, an attending physician advises that the drug or substance will not adversely
affect my ability to safely perform duties as a crane operator.
For purposes of the Substance Abuse Policy, under the influence means the detectable presence
of any drug or substance in the operators body that impairs the operators ability to operate the
crane safely.
Violation of the Substance Abuse Policy may result in disciplinary action up to and including
revoking the operators certification. Operators should expect their certification to be suspended
or revoked for engaging in the unlawful or unauthorized manufacture, distribution, sale, use or
possession of illegal drugs and use of alcohol in the workplace.
At the sole discretion of the Quality Review Assurance Board, an operators certification that was
revoked due to violation of the Substance Abuse Policy may be reinstated under certain conditions.
Conditions for reinstatement include, but are not limited to, the following:
Proof of participation in and successful completion of a treatment, counseling or rehabilitation
substance abuse program that is professionally run and operated
No other incidents of Substance Abuse Policy violations
Taking the General Knowledge, Supplemental and Practical Exams for new certification(s).
