Professional Ethics
THE FINAL COMPREHENSIVE WRITTEN EXAMINATION
FOR THE DOCTOR OF PSYCHOLOGY DEGREE
The American Psychological association has identified five general principles, which
should govern
professional behavior. These principles are in the area of:
Principle A: Beneficence and Non-maleficence
Principle B: Fidelity and Responsibility
Principle C: Integrity
Principle D: Justice
Principle E: Respect for People's Rights and Dignity
Develop a case study in the area of each principle listed above that illustrates a
potential breach of
professional ethics. For each case study, identify and describe the criteria, which
would be used to
determine whether or not a breach of ethics exists. Describe the behavior that
determined the breach of
ethics in your case study. In each case, assume that you are a professional who
observes the problem.
Describe what action you, as a professional psychologist, are required to take.
Describe the actions that
the offending professional should take to correct the problem.

2. Developmental Psychology
Historical, socioeconomic and cultural factors influence our understanding of human behavior. Select
the developmental stage theory of your choice, and explain how these factors have shaped the
current understanding of human behavior in 21 st century Western thought. What areas of human
development do you perceive to be "constant" (both within and across cultures)? What aspects of
developmental stage theory are more likely to be determined by cultural factors: What current
societal trends and changes do you think will influence the next wave of developmental stage
theories?
3. Health Psychology
Describe the evolution of the field of health psychology. Discuss the biopsychosocial model, its
application,
and its influence on current research in the area of health psychology. What do you see as the
strengths and weaknesses of this model? What emerging trends do you see that will impact the field
of health psychology and how do you expect that it will change?

4. Psychopathology
Develop a case study illustrating a client with an anxiety disorder as well as a personality
disorder. Identify and discuss the factors essential in making an appropriate diagnosis and
planning an effective treatment strategy. What are the closely related diagnostic alternatives
and how will you differentiate among them in formulating your diagnosis? What formal
diagnosis (DSM IV) would you give this client and why? Describe at least three alternative
treatment strategies for this condition. Based on your diagnosis, what treatment strategy
would you choose and why would you choose it?
5. Assessment
Discuss the role of psychological assessment in counseling or clinical practice. What are the
strengths
and weaknesses inherent in formal psychological testing? Why might you choose formal
psychological
testing techniques and for what types of clients? What limitations should be considered: Are
there
different considerations for objective and subjective assessment techniques?
