Undergraduate Scholarship Application

The Marilyn Jorgenson Reece Memorial Scholarship has been established by the Los Angeles
Chapter of WTS to encourage women to pursue career paths in transportation engineering,
planning or a related transportation field. These first and second-year scholarships honor
Marilyn J. Reece, who was a pioneering role model for many women in the transportation
industry. She was the first female in California to receive her P.E. license, and held a long
career at the California Department of Transportation in Los Angeles, with the Division of
Highways. She was responsible for the design of the I-10/I-405 Interchange, which is well-
known by all LA residents and has recently been dedicated to Ms. Reece by the Los Angeles
City Council and Caltrans. For more information on WTS LA, visit

The Marilyn J. Reese Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship is in the amount of $2,000. There
will be one awarded to either a first- or second-year undergraduate. The scholarships are
competitive and applications will be evaluated on the following criteria: transportation career
goals, academic record including curriculum and grades, commitment to transportation as
demonstrated by extracurricular activities and/or work experience, writing skills, and the
recommendation. Minority candidates are encouraged to apply. The minimum selection
criteria are as follows:

IV. Personal Statement: A statement about your career goals after graduation and why you
think that you should receive the scholarship award. Statement should not exceed 750 words
or three pages. Please write in the space provided below or attach additional sheets with
email, if necessary.
VI. Official Transcript: Submit by postal mail an original copy of your transcript sealed by
your school.
VII. Proof of Enrollment: Submit by postal mail a copy of your tuition receipt or current
registration card.
