Lesson

Subject: Diversity - Multiculturism


Grade Level: Kindergarten
Objectives: Students will gain an understanding of Diversity and Bias. Explore
Countries from of each Continent. Observe and discuss the differences we see in
the people around the world and in our classroom. Discuss cultural differences
and celebrate what makes us each unique and special.

Basic Lesson: Whole Group Lesson (Circle Time) on The Children of the World.
This is as an extension of the World Map and Seven Continents lesson. In this
lesson students will learn the countries from each of the seven continents, the
people, cultures, lifestyles, dwellings, and other aspects of daily life. We will
explore an assortment of pictures and artifacts from these countries. We will then
spend some time exploring the diversity of our class, letting each student share
their country of origin and find their corresponding continent. We will discuss the
meaning of diversity and the benefits of living in a diverse environment. We will
sing and learn a new song.

Activity #1 What Makes Us Different


1. Students will pick a partner and sit facing each other crisscross
applesauce. They will observe one another and choose five things they
can see about their partner that is different than themselves.
2. The pairs will each have a chance to share their discoveries with the
whole group.
3. Each student will then be asked to share one thing about themselves that
is not noticeable, but that they feel makes them different from the from the

class.
Activity #2 - Lets Make a Menu

To reinforce the concept and definition of Diversity and Bias, I will read Yoko, by
Rosemary Wells. I will engage students in a discussion about the book.
Questions:
Have you ever felt like Yoko because of things that make you different?
How would you like your friends and classmates to respond to your differences?
1. Students will split into groups of four and work together to make a menu of
all of their favorite things, unique to their culture.
2. They will write out the menu items and draw pictures of the dishes.
3. Each group will present their menu to the rest of the class.
Activity #3 Interview, What Makes You Unique

They will rejoin their partner from Activity #1:
1. Interview their partner, finding out what makes them unique and different,
both visible and non visible.
2. Write a paragraph organizing the information.
3. Introduce your partner to the rest of the class, explaining why you feel they
are unique and special.
Assessment:
Students are encouraged to get involved in the lesson and activities. They will
be assessed based on participation, and their learning is measured through
observation. Teacher will take note of:
1. Comprehension through interaction and engagement.
2. Comprehension through written work.
3. Comprehension through demonstration, ability to show what they know.
