Description
The Longlea Magazine Area is located east of
Bendigo, approximately 130 kilometres northnorthwest of Melbourne. The site is situated
over an area of approximately 540 hectares and
was formerly used for the bulk storage of high
explosives, propellants and chemicals. The area
now accommodates storage buildings previously
used for munitions.

Base Activities
The main activity carried out at the site that relates to potential site contamination is the
storage and disposal of hazardous materials.
The area also contains an underground diesel storage tank near the administration building.

Contamination Information
Known Contamination
The only known chemical contamination issue on the site is an isolated area of oil
contamination in soil around a waste oil dump area.
Other contamination noted at the site relates to debris around some buildings that have
been demolished over time. Some of the debris contains asbestos cement fragments,
which is visible in near surface soils.
Risk Assessment Rating
Potential risks from known contamination have been identified on the site. These risks are
actively managed by Defence to ensure that impact to human health and the environment
is minimised. There is no indication that contamination extends off-site based on the works
completed at the base.

assessments to assess the groundwater quality around the area of oil contaminated soil
have been recommended, along with some general clean up works to remove old drums
and debris. These works have not yet been completed.
Other Information
Three reports relating to the environmental condition at the site have been completed
between 2000 and 2006. For further details relating to these documents, contact
