Press Report (Annexure -A)

A. ESCOMS seek Rs 1.40 hike per unit: Electricity Supply Companies
(ESCOMS) in the state have proposed a hike of Rs 1.40 per unit of
power. A proposal in this regard by ESCOMS has been submitted to the
Karnataka Energy Regulatory Commission (KERC). Citing severe
drought and dried-up reservoirs, ESCOMS have justified the proposal,
saying that they need to buy power to ensure uninterrupted supply. The
KERC, after hearing the domestic and commercial consumers and other
stakeholders in the Energy department, will announce the revision by the
end of March 2017. The new rates will come into effect from April 1st,
2017.Early this year, the KERC had allowed a hike of 30 paise per unit as
against the proposed Rs 1.02 per unit by ESCOMS. - [Deccan Herald,

B. Dropdown in coal storage, RTPS: The Karnataka Power Corporation
(KPC) has said RTPS is not receiving sufficient coal blocks for power
generation. The KPC has still not made payments for the mining
companies. On a daily basis RTPS requires 30,000 tonnes for power
generation. The Hon'ble Managing Director, KPC Sri. G. Kumar
Nayak has said The Chief Minister showing great interest allotted 500
crores to make payments for mining companies. - [Prajavani]

C. No Continues power cuts: The Hon'ble Energy Minister Sri. D.K.

Shivakumar speaking at a function in Chikkamagalur has said most of
the reservoir is not filled and the energy department will take necessary
steps to provide sufficient power supply. The state is facing acute power
shortage due to prolonged drought and the department has planned to
purchase power supply to overcome the crisis. - [Prajavani, Vijayavani]
D. Power generation from waste segregation units: The Bengaluru
Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) inspite of opposition from expert committee
has decided to start 7 waste segregation units to generate power supply.
The BBMP has planned to purchase land from local organization, each
unit will be sold at Rs. 7.09/- to the government. -[Vijaya Karnataka]
E. HESCOM stops electrification work in Bhimgad sanctuary: In what
appears to be a case of conflict of interests, Hubballi Electricity Supply
Company (HESCOM) has taken up electrification works to support
drinking water supply schemes in villages in and around Bhimgad
Wildlife Sanctuary in Khanapur taluk without waiting for necessary
clearance from the Forest Department and National Board of Wildlife,
while the latters efforts to protect environment in the forests areas have
so far been allegedly incompatible. HESCOM has taken up work to
provide electricity connections to Hemmadga, Degaon, Holda, Mendil
and Krishnapur villages falling under the sanctuary. Nearly 100 poles had
been erected from Hemmadga to Degaon without obtaining prior
permission from the authorities concerned. -[The Hindu]
F. Electric plane likely in 10 years: The co-founder of a project that
saw a solar-powered aircraft complete the first fuel-free flight around the
world this year, expects electric passenger planes to operate in under 10
years. Bertrand Piccard, who along with fellow pilot Andre Borschberg
founded Solar Impulse, also shrugged off concerns that US Presidentelect Donald Trump's appointment of a fossil fuel industry defender as
his top environmental official could hamper global clean technology
efforts. Since completing their historic fuel-free flight in July, Piccard
and Borschberg have been working on projects to show how the
technologies used in their plane can be used in other applications. [Deccan Herald]

G. Tech watch - Single-layer solar cells: What: Power generation

Developer: Georgia Institute of Technology. A simple solution-based
electrical doping technique could help reduce the cost of polymer solar
cells and organic electronic devices, potentially expanding the
applications for these technologies. By enabling production of efficient
single-layer solar cells, the new process could help move organic
photovoltaics into a new generation of wearable devices and enable
small-scale distributed power generation. [Bangalore Mirror]
H. India imports 87% solar cells from China : India imported solar
and photovoltaic cells worth about $826 million from China in the first
six months of the current fiscal, which is over 87% of the country's total
such imports. The New and Renewable Energy Minister Piyush Goyal
stated in a written reply to the Loksabha on Thursday in 2014-15, the
proportion of solar and photovoltaic cells imports from China were
73.49% of the total imports at $603.34 million. - [ Deccan Herald ]
