Year 3 Class Bulletin
Term 6 June 2010

Dear Parents / Carers,

Welcome back to the last term, I can’t believe how the year is flying by! We have an exciting trip to
Chessington World of Adventure planned for the 24th June so I will be grateful for a few volunteers for
that day. Please make a note of a few other important dates to keep track of this term.

Topics this term Important Notes

In Literacy this term we will be continuing with a variety of
information texts (instructions, letter writing and
persuasive writing) based on our dragon theme. By the end
of week two/three the children will have produced their
own dragon leaflet using ICT to publish them. The dragon
reports that the children produced last term were really
impressive. A few were selected for the writing
competition so I will let you know if any of ours were
successful! For the rest of the term we will re-visit
narrative writing linked to our topic.
In Numeracy this term we will be focusing on measures,
fractions and problem solving, applying all of the calculation
strategies we have been learning and practising over the
year. Please continue to help your child practise their
tables daily as well as the rapid recall of number facts
to 100. This is extremely important and will really
support them as they prepare to move up to year 4.
Science – Science – Helping Plants Grow Well. Children
will learn that plants provide food for humans and other
animals, and that plants need light, water and warmth and
healthy leaves, roots and stems in order to grow well.
Children will make careful measurements of volumes of
water and height of plants and recognise that in
experiments and investigations a number of plants need to
be used to provide reliable evidence.
Topic – Walk like the Egyptians!
We will continue to do a variety of topic work
based on Ancient Egyptians. So far not many children have
brought in small dolls for mummies so can I remind you to
do this so that we can get mummifying! We will be doing a
variety of DT and Art work this term, making pyramids,
sculptures and sarcophaguses and Mrs McCraw has a very
exciting ICT play script project planned.
As a class, Year 3 is very good at remembering
P.E. kit so well done! However, a few are still forgotten
every week. Please keep reminding children to bring
their kit on the day or keep it at school as it is very
important that everyone takes part in every lesson.
Indoor PE is on Mondays. Kit required: pale blue t-
shirt/dark sweatshirt, navy shorts/tracksuit bottoms
and plimsolls.
Outdoor PE will be on Fridays. Kit required: pale blue
t-shirt/dark sweatshirt, navy shorts/tracksuit bottoms
and trainers.
Reading Books – Changed every Tuesday
A number of reading record books are not being
signed every week so I would really like to encourage
everyone to read regularly with your children.
Reading to, or listening to your child and then
questioning them about the text is not only helpful for
their reading progress, it is also very important for
developing their own writing style as they prepare to
move on to the demands of Year 4 writing. Thank you
for helping your children with their reading and for
keeping up their excellent record of bringing their book
bags to school daily. Library -Thursday
Homework – This term I will aim to hand homework out
on Thursdays to fit in with homework club. I ask that
children return their homework on the following
Wednesday but if they complete it before I am happy
to take it in to get started on the marking! I would be
grateful if you could remind your child to have it out of
their book bags to hand in on Wednesdays. Spelling
tests will still be on Fridays.

SRE – Sex and Relationships Education

This term SRE will be taught throughout the school.

In Year 3 we will be covering the following areas:

 Self Esteem – The children will learn to recognise their worth as

individuals by identifying positive things about themselves and their
achievements. They will begin to identify an area that needs to be
strengthened.

 Challenging Gender Stereotypes – The children will learn how to

recognise and challenge gender stereotypes and understand that males
and females can do the same tasks and enjoy the same things.

 Differences – We will discuss and identify the differences between

males and females and name the body parts.

 Family Differences – We will learn to recognise that all families are

different and understand that people sometimes have stereotypes
about families.

 Decision Making – The children will learn how to demonstrate simple,

effective decision making strategies by considering choices and
different possibilities.

 Safety – The children will learn how to use basic techniques to resist
pressure. They will learn how to identify potential dangers, recognise
pressure and know who they can go to for support.
