some students to use and to explain their
reasoning.

Opening

Preview: How will I preview objective(s), agenda, and assessment?

You are members of this classroom community and you all have jobs to make sure our
classroom is safe and ready for everyone to learn. You make this classroom unique and special.
Today we are going to learn about different jobs that people have out there in our
neighborhood.
Hook: How will I capture the classs interest/motivate them to learn?
We are going to do a gallery walk out in the hallway. There are pictures on the walls that I
want you to observe carefully. When we come back, I will record our thinking on the Circle
Map, Who are community helpers?
Mini-Lesson (I Do)
How will I engagingly present a digestible amount of material?
Before we record, I will use a sentence stem to help me. Watch what I do and say. Hmm, I
saw a picture of a police office out in the hallway. I know! A police officer is a community
helper. (Post picture of police officer and write the word police officer on the map.)
Shared (We Do)
How will I have students participate in the writing?
Now lets try it together. Turn and talk to a partner, and use the sentence to tell them the name
of another community helper. (I walk around to listen and support partners.) I listened to these
two partners, and they named another community helper, a doctor! (Post picture of doctor and
write doctor on the map.)
Independent (You Do)
Will students have sufficient opportunity to hone their own writing craft?
Now you do it. You will work on your own Circle Map to draw these two community members
we named, police officer and doctor. You can also draw other community members we have
not named. You can add labels to your pictures. (Students work independently on their map.
My co-teacher and I will have a clipboard and check in with different tables.)
Closing: How will I revisit objective(s) and ensure understanding?
(The timer sounds off.) It is time to clean up. Leave your Circle Maps on the table.
(Transition to the rug for closing.) As I walked around, I noticed that you drew the pictures of
other community helpers. Who is another community helper that we can add to our map?
(Take 3 students.) This week, we are going to focus on construction workers!
