Jamia petitions against media

stereotype of Muslims

amia Mosque has called on the

Media Council of Kenya to take
appropriate measures to tame
the increasing misrepresentation of
Muslims by the media.
In a complaint note to the media regulator, the secretary general Abdulbary Hamid accused media agencies

of propagating negative stereotypes about Muslims and

fueling animosity towards Muslims.
The committee singled out Mediamax Network Limited
and the Standard Group for airing content that stereotypes
Muslims and portray Islam as a faith that promotes violence and terrorism.
Mediamax through its TV channel K24 has been running
an anti-terrorism drama series Kenya Elite Response Unit

Mombasa Da'wa Conference

Mombasa governor Ali Hassan Joho addresses thousands of participants who turned up for
the first Mombasa Da'wa Conference held at the Sheikh Zayed Primary School

(KERU) which the Committee asserts that the production

has been deliberately designed
to drive forward the narrative
that Muslims are terrorists and
Islam is a religion which promotes violence against innocent people.
He accused the television station for misrepresenting Islam
and associating it with terrorism. The continuous depiction of mosques, terrorists
dressed as Muslims and usage of Islamic terms which in
most instances are wrongly
expressed by the members of
the cast -majority of whom are
non-Muslims- is a further testimony of the deliberate strategy
to portray Muslims as the perpetrators of terrorism, Abdulbary said.
Singling out Muslims as the
terrorists -as it is clear from the
KERU production-is an attempt
to drive home the narrative
that Muslims are the terrorists
and the public should be wary
of them lest there are harmed,
he added.
According to the Committee,
the same production had initially been presented to KBC
television but it was rejected on

Implement court ruling on hijab, education ministry urged

The education cabinet secretary Fred matiangihas been urged to
ensure the ruling delivered by Court of Appeal allowing Muslim female students to wear hijab as part of the school uniform is adhered
to and fully implemented by learning institutions.
The passionate call was made by the Western regional chairman
of the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM), Sheikh Abdi
Wafula Swaleh who called on cabinet secretary to see to it that the
court order is implemented to ensure that the rights of Muslim girls
are protected while in school.
Sheikh Wafula noted that religious discrimination against Muslim
students is rife in many church sponsored institutions across the
country and appealed to education CS Matiang'i to take measures
to effect the new rules on school uniform so as to protect the fundamental rights to freedom of religion and belief for all pupils and students in the country's education system. The chair said it was unconstitutional for public funded schools to hinder Muslim students from
practicing their religious rights just because they are sponsored and
run by religious organizations.
He pointed out that despite the recent court of appeal land mark rul-

ing that allowed Muslim students to wear hijabs while at school,

some church sponsored schools were yet to conform and stated
that education cabinet secretary should consider formulating
and put in place regulations for better protection of all pupils
and students against discrimination.Sheikh Abdi called on the
Muslim Education Council (MEC) to engage with the education
ministry officials and other education stakeholders with a view
of amending relevant rules touching on school uniforms to allow
those students whose religious beliefs require them to wear particular items of clothing in addition to the school uniforms.
''There is urgent need for Muslim Education Council (MEC)a
body mandated by law to manage the affairs of education where
Muslims are concerned to spearhead and initiate the consultations process to formulate rules and regulations on school uniforms to provide an exemption as well as accommodate pupils
and students whose religious beliefs require them to wear particular attire in addition to the school uniform,'' he said.
In the ruling in September this year, Nyeri appellate judges Philip

Businessman accused of attempt to misappropriate wakf property

A Mombasa family is lamenting over what

it says are sinister plans by a businessman
to craftily take over a property meant to be
a wakf (endowment) for a mosque.
The property which currently houses the
Tahmeed Bus office, according to the family of the late former Chief Kadhi Sheikh
Nassoro Muhammad Nahdy was bequeathed to benefit the Shibu masjid located in the Mwembe Tayari area.
Speaking to the Friday Bulletin, the family spokesman Munir Sketty accused the
businessman Abdallah Ahmed Omar who
runs a restaurant and other businesses
at the premises of failing to live up to his
obligation of paying rent for the premises
and instead resorting to devious ways to
take over the property.
He renovated
the house without our consent and is now

entrenching himself as the owner. He insists on paying a ground rent of Sh2, 000
per month as if the house belongs to him,
says Munir.
According to court documents seen by The
Friday Bulletin, the house was dedicated
as a wakf property by the grandmother of
the late Chief Kadhi and all proceeds accrued from it were supposed to go towards
the running of the Shibu Mosque.
The house in Question was dedicated as
wakf by my grandmother Aisha Binti Shafi
in 1944 where she directed that income of
the whole of the said house go to the Shibu mosque and be spent on the mosque,
said an affidavit sworn by the former Chief
Kadhi in January 2013.
As it is a wakf property we do not have

A High court has quashed an application

to demolish the Milimani Park Mosque in
Nanyuki, Laikipia county.
This is after three individuals from Muthaiga and Shika Adabu residential area where
the mosque is situated went to court to halt
the construction of the mosque which was
nearing completion and made a petition for
its demolition.
The trio-Zakaria Kagunya, Antony Ndungu
and Joyce Wachira filed the case in April
2015 against the trustees of the mosque
and the county government of Laikipia accusing it of being an accomplice in the illegal construction of the mosque.
In her ruling on October 6, Justice Lucy
Waithaka sitting at the environment and
land court in Nyeri dismissed the application on the ground that the court lacked
jurisdiction to determine the case since it
touched on matters relating to approval
of developments under the Physical Planning Act and the Environmental Management and Co-coordination Act (EMCA).

I am of the considered view that this court

lacks jurisdiction to hear and determine
disputes arising from those statues as a
court of first instance. Consequently, I
dismiss the application and the suit with
costs to the respondents, ruled Justice
Waithaka.
In their application the plaintiffs alleged
that the mosque was been constructed on
unsurveyed land and that the respondents
were constructing the mosque without
obtaining the requisite development approvals such as carrying out environment
impact assessment and obtaining change
of user for the land from the relevant authorities.
In a replying affidavit, the trustees of the
mosque argued that the applicants did not
demonstrate the prejudice they would suffer if their orders are denied further asserting that the mosque has been in existence
since 2006. They further opposed the
application on the grounds that there are
churches in the area and the applicants

even authority to sell it. We are even ready

to refund him the costs of the renovation
provided he returns the house to its rightful owners to ensure that it benefits the
mosque, Munir further said.
A frustrated Munir said attempts to seek
redress from the former Mombasa County
Council and the courts have not been successful. We have the documents to prove
ownership of the property and despite the
fact that he lacks documents to prove, the
matter has been dragging on for long as
the mosque is being denied proceeds, he
said.
Efforts for the Friday Bulletin to get a comment from the businessman on the matter
were unsuccessful as his phone could not
be reached.

the basis that it was biased, prejudiced and
insensitive towards Muslims.
It thus begs the question as to why K24
went out of its way to cast aside established media ethics and accepted to air
such a programme that has the potential to
fan animosity against members of the Muslim community, said the secretary general
as he expressed concern that the continued airing of the series would only continue
to implant the seeds of hate towards Muslims and the Islamic faith.
The Standard Group flagship channel KTN
News was also accused of misrepresenting the concept of Jihad which was associated with terrorism and violence during
a news feature on the Anti-Jihad boxer
which aired on November 15.
The concept of Jihad is comprehensive and nowhere is it synonymous with
violence or terrorism. Even though some
Muslims, out of their ignorance of Islam are

perpetuating acts of violence in the name

of Jihad for their self-centered motives, still
this does not justify misrepresenting this
principle, the mosque said in a protest
note to the Standard Group.
In its 2014 report, Deconstructing Terror:
Assessing the Medias role in Religious
Intolerance and Radicalisation, the Media
Council of Kenya accused the media for
propagation the narrative that stereotypes
Muslims and labels all Muslims as potential
terrorists and the war on terror is a war involving Muslims and Christians.
Following a complaint from Jamia Mosque
Committee, the Media Council of Kenya
in April 2010 ordered Kenya Times Media
Trust to run an apology for the inaccurate
and misleading reports carried in an article
published in the Sunday Times titled In the
name of Allah which the Committee asserted that it amounted to hate speech
against Muslims.

were driven by religious animosity. The

mosque trustees also informed the court
that they had already taken steps to comply with the law.
The committee of the Mosque is now appealing to the Muslim community to help
finance the completion of the two storey
mosque and a Madrassa. They say they
have exhausted all their finances in the
court battle and are unable to raise the estimated cost of Sh2 million shillings.

Believers! send your blessings on him

Yusra Owais
Of the greatest blessings that Allah has
given to mankind is sending the Prophet
sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam as our guide
and the Qur'an as our Book.
With the exception of Muhammad sal
Allahu alayhi wa sallam, every Prophet
and Messenger sent by Allah azza wa jal
was sent to a specific nation for a specific
time period. Allah ta'ala chose Muhammad sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam as the
Messenger for all the worlds and raised
his status and mention among all of mankind.
Allah ta'ala describes this bounty that
He gave to the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi
wa sallam in the Qur'an, And We have
raised for you your mention. (94:4)
We bear witness five times a day that
he is the Messenger of Allah, we send
peace upon him during our prayers, we
open our gatherings with his mention after the mention of Allah azza wa jal and
we ask Allah to bless him before we make
a duaa. All of these acts show that we
bear witness that he sal Allahu alayhi wa
sallam delivered the message. Bearing
witness that he delivered the message
necessitates his love, his obedience and
sending salah when he is mentioned, sal
Allahu alayhi wa sallam.
Allah azza wa jal says, Allah and His
angels send blessings on the Prophet:
O you that believe! Send your blessings
on him, and salute him with all respect.
(33:56)1
The ayaat in the Qur'an that commands
the believers to do good deeds or refrain
from evil actions begins with Ya ayyuhal latheena aamanU, O you who have
believed however this ayah does not
begin in this way. Rather, Allah mentions
that He and His Angels send blessings
and greetings on the Prophet sal Allahu
alayhi wa sallam first before calling the
Believers to follow.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala calls the believers, because of your emaan, send
salah and salaam on the Messenger.
The Scholars of tafseer state that this is
to show the honorable and elevated status of the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa
sallam as well as to show the honor in
the act of sending salah on him. If Allah
and His Angels do this action, it should
motivate the Believers to do so as well.
Why do we Send Salawat on the
Prophet?
If a close relative of ours passed away,
such as a parent or a sibling, we would
vehemently ask Allah to forgive them, to
grant them security, and to enter them
into Jannah. The Believers are those
who love the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi
wa sallam more than their family, wealth
and their own selves so just as we would
ask Allah to forgive and bless our relative, we should send prayers upon our
Messenger sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam
who, by the bounty and mercy of Allah,
has taught us our faith.
Allah azza wa jal says, It is He Who has

sent amongst the unlettered a Messenger from among themselves, to rehearse

to them His Signs, to purify them, and to
teach them the Book and Wisdom (Sunnah),- although they had been, before, in
manifest error;-As well as (to confer all
these benefits upon) others of them, who
have not already joined them: And He is
exalted in Might, Wise. Such is the Bounty of Allah, which He bestows on whom
He wills: and Allah is the Lord of the highest bounty. [62:2-4]
We send salawat on the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam to acknowledge
the great blessing that Allah has given
us by sending the Messenger to us. Just
as prayer is a manifestation of our love,
gratitude and obedience to Allah azza wa
jal, sending salawat on the Prophet sal
Allahu alayhi wa sallam shows our love
for him, our respect for him, and our obedience to him.
We must also remember that Rasul Allah
sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam was only a
man who does not possess any power to
harm or benefit us. Many from amongst
our Ummah have taken their love of the
Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam to an
extreme that is not only forbidden in our
religion, but does the exact opposite of
their intended goal. Worship is exclusive
for Allah azza wa jal and obeying and loving the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam falls under the worship of Allah.
Meaning of 'salah' and 'Salaam'
The linguistic meaning of salah is to pray
and to supplicate. When it is said, salla
'alaa like the above ayah, it gives us
three meanings:
1.To incline to someone and pay attention to them out of love.
2.To praise someone (thanaa').
3.To pray for someone.
When salah is used for Allah ta'ala (i.e.,
when Allah does salah on someone) it
means:
1.Allah loves that person.
2.Allah praises that person.
3.Allah sends blessings, His Pleasure
and Mercy on that person.
When the creation does salah it means
that they pray to Allah to send blessings
on that creation. They seek forgiveness
for them and ask Allah to send good to
them. The meaning of love and praise is
also understood in this meaning. Salawaat is plural of salah.
We are commanded in this ayah to do
two things:
Firstly: send your salah on him this
means that we ask Allah to send blessings on the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa
sallam and ask Allah to praise him in the
manner that he guided us to do.
There is a small difference of opinion
amongst the scholars on the meaning
of sending salah; the majority state that
it means 'mercy from Allah, prayers for
forgiveness offered by the angels, and

duaa offered by humans.' The other group of

scholars such as Ibnul Qayyim, Abul Aliyah and
shaykh ibn al-Uthaymeen state that the meaning of sending blessings on the Prophet is to
ask Allah to praise him in the assembly of the
Angels.
Both of these meanings can be taken as the
definition because it is all included in the linguistic meaning of sending salah, and Allah
knows best.
Secondly: and offer tasleem as it should be
(offered). The linguistic meaning of tasleem
is to offer greetings of peace. It also gives a
meaning of asking for peace and security. This
meaning comes from the root word of tasleem
and the word salaamah. The two meanings of
tasleem are:
1.'May as-Salaam (The Perfection, One who
Gives Peace and Security) be with you', meaning may His Blessings be upon you.
2.'May you be secure, peaceful and safe.
How to Send Salawat
The most important aspect of sending salawat
is that it is done in accordance with what the
Prophet himself taught us; as a condition for
the acceptance of deeds is that they are from
the sunnah of Rasul Allah sal Allahu alayhi wa
sallam.
After the mention of his name, one should say:
sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam or alayhi salaatu
wa salaam which can be translated as: may the
peace and blessings of Allah be upon him or
peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. One
can also say any duaa that sends peace and
blessings upon him such as: Allahumma sali
wa sallim alaa Nabiyyina Muhammad, O Allah
send Your praise, prayers and peace upon our
Prophet Muhammad.
For other times such as in salah or on Fridays,
one should say what the Prophet sal Allahu
alayhi wa sallam taught us from the sunnah.
There are two authentic narrations with different wordings:
Abu Muhammad Ka'b bin Ujrah (May Allah be
pleased with him) reported: The Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam came to us and we asked
him, O Messenger of Allah, we already know
how to greet you (i.e., say As-salamu alaykum), but how should we supplicate for you?
He said, Say: `Allahumma salli `ala Muhammadin, wa `ala aali Muhammadin, kama sallaita `ala aali Ibrahima, innaka Hamidum Majid.
Allahumma barik `ala Muhammadin, wa `ala
aali Muhammadin, kama barakta `ala aali Ibrahima, innaka Hamidum Majid [O Allah, exalt the
mention of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as you exalted the family of Ibrahim.
You are Praised and Glorious. O Allah, bless
Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as
You blessed the family of Ibrahim. You are
Praised and Glorious.]' [Bukhari and Muslim]

Prophet Salallahu alayhi wa sallam-The Romantic husband

By Faraz al Mahmudi
The Prophet salallahu alaihi wasallam was the most romantic individual. He is the best example for the ideal husband. He was
comforting for his wives, wiping their tears, respecting their emotions, hearing their words, caring for their complaints, alleviating
their sadness, going in picnics with them, racing with them, bearing their abandonment, discussing matters with them, keeping
their dignity, supporting them in emergencies, declaring his love to
them and was very happy with such love.
The husband and wife have to bond with one another psychologically, physically and spiritually. Here are some attractive examples
and points we need to adopt to achieve a marriage of romance:
Know their feelings
The Prophet salallahu alaihi wasallam once said to Sayyidah Aisha radhiallahu anha : I know well when you are pleased or angry
with me. Aisha replied: How you know that? He said: When you
are pleased with me you swear by saying By the God of Muhammad but when you are angry you swear by saying By the God
of Ibrahim. She said: You are right, I dont mention your name.
(Bukhari)
The husband and wife should be aware of each others feelings.
The husband should be able to gauge when his wife is upset or
sad, likewise the wife should be able to read her husbands behaviour. By being conscious of one anothers feelings, it will help
resolve any differences. When your spouse is down or upset, be
there to console him/her. Sit with them, speak with them, listen to
them. Try and make them smile. If the husband is always conscious of his wifes feelings, and the wife is always conscious of
the husbands feelings, then this will assist greatly in keeping the
flicker alight. (Bayhaqi)
Console her
Sayyidah Safiyah radhiallahu anha was on a journey with the
Prophet salallahu alaihi wasallam. She was late so the Prophet
salallahu alaihi wasallam received her while she was crying. The
Prophet salallahu alaihi wasallam wiped her tears with his own
hands and tried his utmost to calm her down.
This is another feature a marriage must have. Each spouse has to
be there for the other in the good and bad times. The wife should
find comfort and solace in the husband and the husband should
find warmth and love in his wife. Be gentle with one another.
Laying in the wifes lap
The Prophet salallahu alaihi wasallam would recline in the lap
of our beloved mother Sayyidah Aisha radhiallahu anha even in
the state when she would be menstruating. The Prophet salallahu alaihi wasallam would recite the Qurn whilst reclining in his
wifes lap.[Bukhari]
How many times have we rested in the lap of our spouse? These
gestures may seem trivial but they are the acts which bring the
hearts close. The wife can sense and see the love of her husband
for her in such actions. Every so often come home and just go and
rest in the lap of your wife. She will appreciate this gesture greatly.
Combing the spouses hair:
Aisha radhiallahu anha would comb the hair of the Prophet salallahu alaihi wasallam and wash his hair.
This is how close a couple has to be. Love evolves and grows to
such an extent that a spouse yearns to do everything for the other
spouse even if it simply combing their hair. To maintain a high
intensity of love, do the little things for your spouse also. Little
acts have a huge psychological impact on the mind of the spouse.
Seldom comb their hair, take their clothes out to wear, bring them
a cold drink on a hot day, prepare something for them etc.
Drinking and eating from one place:
Aisha radhiallahu anha would drink from a cup. The Prophet salallahu alaihi wasallam would take this cup and search for the place
where the lips of his beloved wife made contact. Upon finding the
place where his wife drank from the cup, he would put his lips on
the very same place so that his lips have touched the place where
her lips touched. He would then drink the contents of the cup at
the same time enjoying union with his spouse. When there was

meat to eat, Sayyidah Aisha radhiallahu anha would take a bite.

The Prophet salallahu alaihi wasallam would take the meat from
her hand and again place his mouth the very same place where
his wife ate from. This would add taste of love to his food.[AnNisai]
Do things together with your wife. Do not just eat at the same
time and on the same tablecloth, but eat from the same plate. Let
alone the same plate, eat together from the same article of food.
This will bond the hearts so close to one another. When everything your wife comes into contact with becomes more beloved to
you than food itself, imagine the flame of love in your lives?
Kissing
The Prophet salallahu alaihi wasallam would kiss his wife regularly. Even when he salallahu alaihi wasallam would be fasting, he
would kiss his wife.[Muslim]
Compliment your spouse often with kisses. When exiting the
house, make it habit you leave by coming into contact with your
spouse. When returning home, along with saying salm to her,
show that you have missed her dearly.
When she is working or busy in her household chores, surprise her
with a kiss. You have to show your love. Love is the fuel of marriage; if you desire your marriage to progress, you have to express
your love in every way you can.
Physical relations in a marriage are very important. The famous
saying is, actions speak louder than words. Show your spouse
you love her. Sharah promotes romance and physical relations
between the husband and wife. The Prophet salallahu alaihi
wasallam categorically stated, Conjugal relations with your wife
is a sadaqah.[Muslim]

Address Medics grievances, CIPK tells government

The Council of Imams and Preachers of
Kenya (CIPK) has called on the government to address the grievances of medical
practitioners noting that the ongoing industrial action has adversely affected health
care.
The council's national chairman Sheikh
Abdalla Ateka said the ongoing strike by
doctors now in its second week has adversely affected service deliveries in the
health sector across the country and the
government should find meaningful ways
to address the matter to end the suffering
of Kenyans.
He emphasized on the government to
honour its part of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and increase the
salaries and allowances for the doctors
and ensure that they resume their work. ''I
urge the government to address the grievances of doctors so that they can go back
to work,'' Ateka told The Friday Bulletin.

He urged the Cabinet Secretary for Health

Dr Cleopa Mailu to urgently address the
concerns of the medics to save innocents
lives of patients at various health facilities
who are suffering due to lack of medical
services.
The chairman also urged doctors and
nurses to have compassion to the innocent
patients and go out of their way to extend
their services to those without alternative
medical care.
Echoing the same sentiments, the council
national organizing secretary Sheikh Muhammad Khalifa appealed for the health
workers to exercise humanity and resume
duty as they chart way forward with the
government.
He urged on the doctors to have the spirit
of understanding and to look after the wellbeing of their patients as the dispute is being resolved.
The doctors and nurses in public hospitals

downed their tools on Monday last week in

response to a refusal by the government
to hike their salaries and allowances as
agreed in a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) signed by both the medics and
the government in 2013.
The medics through their Umbrella unions
Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist
Union (KMPDU) and Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) had earlier issued
a 21-day strike notice which elapsed last
Sunday at midnight and warned that no
services will be provided in the health facilities across the country.
While doctors continue with the strike, the
nurses on Wednesday reached a deal with
the health ministry and agreed to call of the
industry action.
In the deal, the nurses will receive up to
Sh20,00 in monthly allowances while negotiations on the Collective Bargaining Agreement will be concluded by March next year.

CNN fetes Lamu woman for for improving lives

A 33-year old Lamu
woman was among individuals from around the
world who was recognized by the American
television network CNN
for their extraordinary
contributions that help
improve the lives of others.Umrah Omar Bwana who founded Safari
Doctors was among ten
nominees from across
the globe for the 2016
CNN Hero of the year.As a recognition of their outstanding work
in their communities, each of the ten heroes were awarded a US$
10,000 (Sh 1 million) prize during the 10th annual event held on
Sunday in New York. The overall cash prize of US$100,000 went
to Jeison Aristizbal of Columbia.Umrah was recognized for her
outstanding work in providing much needed health services to
people living in remote areas in the Lamu archipelago.
A trained psychologist, she left her well-paying job in the United States and moved back to Kenya in 2010 and founded Safari
Doctors a team of volunteer medics that travels by boat and
road to offer free medical services to people living in remote
areas where medical facilities are hard to come by.
The medics go through tortuous journey by sea and land providing
free basic medical services -- including immunizations, maternal
health care and treatment for malaria and other common diseases
in the region -- to more than 1,000 residents of six villages in the
county of Lamu. The county government has been supportive of
her work where it provides vaccines, a doctor and nurses while a
local agency Mission for Essential Drugs and Supplies (MEDS)
provides medicine.
Despite the prevailing insecurity and remoteness of the villages,
Umrah and her team have been resilient in their work which has
saved many lives. Our emphasis is on primary health care. We all
agree that prevention is better than cure. Therefore, our package
includes reducing the prevalence of HIV/Aids, reducing environmental health-related diseases and taking care of mothers and
children, she says about her work.
Umrah was in New York on Sunday to receive the award which
she hopes will contribute to the provision of better health care to
the residents of the marginalized county. May this award be a
constant reminder that marinating in comfort is not an option. Fear
is not an option. With a leap of faith, we can all be the change that

Page 6

our world screams for, she said in her speech during the award
giving ceremony which was aired live on CNN.
After 10 years, and nearly 300 Heroes, we are so grateful to continue honoring those making such an impact in their communities,
and to help them continue their work, said Kelly Flynn, creator
and senior executive producer of CNN Heroes.
Umrah and her organization Safari Doctors is an inspiration of
how one person with conviction can do to make a difference on the
war on poverty and in providing people with basic needs.

The Romantic husband

Assisting her in the housework

The Prophet salallahu alaihi wasallam would clean and help at
home. He would see to his needs himself rather than demanding
his wife. He would clean and see to his clothing himself.
Without being asked, if the couple help each other in day to day
activities, it will make one appreciate the other. Likewise, one
should try his best not to demand his/her spouse to do things too
much. Whatever one can do himself, he should do. We need to
be considerate of the spouse. The wife works tirelessly all day. So
if the husband was to be considerate and realise his wife works
hard, this will touch the wife. Likewise, if the wife was to go out of
her way to see to the needs of her husband being considerate, it
will induce a great spark of love between the two.
Telling her stories
Discuss stories and events with your spouse. Engage in light
hearted discussions with her-something to laugh and joke over.
The Prophet salallahu alaihi wasallam on many occasions would
discuss stories, events and have light hearted discussions. The
famous story narrated by Sayyidah Aisha radhiallahu anha regarding Umm Zar is evident.
This is one angle which is neglected more so than often. It is all
business between the husband and wife. They do not get into
light hearted conversations. Instead, the husband rings his friends
and chuckles with them. The wife on the other hand giggles during the day with her friends. This should not be the case. Focus
and divert all your amusement and entertainment at your spouse.
If you want to laugh, then let it be that you are laughing with your
wife.
Make it a point in your busy schedule daily where you sit with your
wife and do nothing but have fun with her.
Racing with his wife
The Prophet salallahu alaihi wasallam would exercise and play
with his wife also. The famous incident of the Prophet salallahu
alaihi wasallam challenging his wife to race is well known. When a
couple can have such good times together, it only ignites the love
even more.
Calling her by a beautiful name
The Prophet salallahu alaihi wasallam would call his wife Humair
out of love. Linguistically it means the little reddish one, but the
scholars state that in reality it refers to someone who is so fair
that due to the sun they get a reddish tan. This was the reason
why the Prophet salallahu alaihi wasallam called her Humairaa.
[Ibn Majah]
Call your spouse nice sweet names. One has to show his partner
love and affection in every little thing. One needs to feed love
constantly to his spouse to keep the flame burning.
Once the Prophet salallahu alaihi wasallam stared into his wifes
eyes. He was gazing at the world within his wifes eyes. He then
said to Sayyidah Aisha radhiallahu anha in praise of her beauty,
How white are your eyes.
This is what is needed. The husband and wife should be constantly complementing and praising each other. The husband has
to show his love and attraction to his wife. The wife needs to show
her infatuation for her husband. When there is a reciprocal relationship, the marriage climbs heights.
Dress for your spouse
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbs radhiallahu anhu said: As my wife adorns
herself for me, I adorn myself for her. I do not want to take all of
my rights from her so that she will not take all of her rights from me
because Allah, the Exalted, stated the following: And women shall
have rights similar to the rights against them. (Qurn 2 :228.)
This is another area where many spouses fail. The wife only
dresses when it is a special occasion. The husband on the hand
stays scruffy and does not take care to be neat and tidy. If the couple want their everyday to be a special occasion like their wedding
day, they must dress to impress!
The wife should wear the clothing which pleases her husband.

Page 8

Likewise, the husband should wear what the wife likes. Every
time the husband and wife glance at each other, the glance should
arouse them and stir up more love for their spouse. This will ignite
the love in the heart.
Do not talk about her private matters:
The Prophet salallahu alaihi wasallam described the one who discloses his wifes affairs to others as amongst the worst of people.
[Muslim]
Whatever occurs between yourself and your spouse should remain between you two. How unmanly and shameful is it when a
husband discusses his wife to his friends? The secrets and issues
of the spouse must not be narrated at all to anyone. Do not talk
about your wife to others. Your wife is for you. You are for your
wife. Your fidelity and loyalty should always be to your spouse.
Loving and respecting their families
Another great factor to contribute to a healthy relationship is to
love and cherish the family of your spouse. The Prophet salallahu
alaihi wasallam was once asked whom he loved the most. He
replied, Aisha. When the questioner rephrased his question and
asked from amongst the men, he replied, Her father.
The Prophet could have easily said Abu Bakr. His answer displays
such intelligence and ingenuity, that in one response he displayed
his devotion to his wife and her family. He exhibited his fondness
for his in-laws. Imagine how happy his wife Sayyidah Aisha would
have become upon hearing this response?
Never underestimate the importance of seemingly little things as
putting food in your wifes mouth, opening the cars door for her,
etc.
Try to always find some time for both of you to pray together.
Strengthening the bond between you and Allah Subhanahu wa
is the best guarantee that your own marital bond would always
remain strong. Having peace with Allah Subhanahu wa Taala will
always result in having more peace at home.

#AleppoIsDying but her people are victorious

Mukhtar Master
Never in the history of war has the world
been able to follow, up close and personal,
the lives and the news of people who have
suffered during a brutal war. However, we
have watched and read in disbelief as the
people have sent their final messages
from besieged eastern Aleppo. Whose
heart doesnt bleed following the events of
the last couple of days in eastern Aleppo?
The regimes aerial bombardment, illegal
use of chlorine barrel bombs and incessant
shelling have facilitated massive territorial
gains over the last 24 hours, leaving the
rebels to defend a very small pocket of land
with an estimated 100 thousand civilians
crammed into the remaining buildings.
The streets of the districts and territories
that have been taken are littered with dead
bodies. Buildings have been reduced to
rubble with living people buried underneath
and yet there is no one to rescue them. As
predicted, there are gruesome reports of
countless atrocities being carried out by
the regime and its militias. With reports of
summary executions of civilians, medical
staff and even of children in numerous districts in eastern Aleppo, it is hardly surprising that the civilians have sought sanctuary
in rebel held areas rather than move into
regime areas. In fact the regime has even
resorted to the ultimate low of using forced
conscription of fleeing civilians to fight the
remaining rebels.
The UK Parliament yesterday decided to
debate the humanitarian disaster unfolding in Aleppo. George Osborne, the former
Chancellor of the Exchequer, has stated
that he takes his share of responsibility
but also went on to say that the Govern-

Sending Blessings on him

Abu Humaid As-Sa'idi (May Allah be
pleased with him) reported: The Companions of the Messenger of Allah said: O
Messenger of Allah! How should we supplicate for you? He sal Allahu alayhi wa
sallam replied, Say: `Allahumma salli `ala
Muhammadin wa `ala azwajihi wa dhurriyyatihi, kama sallaita `ala Ibrahima; wa

wa dhurriyyatihi, kama barakta `ala Ibrahima, innaka Hamidum-Majid [O Allah, exalt
the mention of Muhammad and his wives
and offspring as You exalted the mention
of the family of Ibrahim, and bless Muhammad and the wives and the offspring of Muhammad as you blessed the family of Ibrahim. You are the Praised, the Glorious'].
[Bukhari and Muslim]
Can we Send Salawat for the Prophet
with those Traveling to Madinah?
A modern practice we see nowadays is
asking those who are going for hajj/umrah
and will be visiting the Prophet's masjid to
say, send my salaams to the Prophet,
however this is not from the sunnah nor
has it been recorded that any of the righteous predecessors did this.
Send your salaam on him now and it will
reach him by the will of Allah.

Page 10

ment was deluding itself if it did not take

responsibility for the slaughter unfolding in
eastern Aleppo.
Though better late than never, we do not
need the crocodile tears of these politicians
lamenting the fact that they could have
changed the situation. The truth is that the
Muslims of Aleppo now know that no one,
no country and no world body has come
to their rescue despite the world watching
graphic news report after news report of
Aleppo. Video appeals and children tweeting for help and support have all fallen on
deaf ears. We now know that, as Muslims,
we can be starved, gassed, bombed, shot,
buried alive and dispossessed and no one
will give us a seconds thought not even
our so-called Muslim leaders. Every single
type of military ordinance in existence fell
and continues to fall on eastern Aleppo
yet no one was able to drop a single loaf
of bread. In an age that professes human
rights and international criminal laws, we,
as Muslims, now know where we stand and
we will never forget that these rights and
laws simply do not apply to us.
News has now emerged of a ceasefire to
allow civilians and rebels to leave the besieged city. Such deals are precarious and
fraught with many difficulties, not least of
which are treachery and a change of mind.
This obviously seems to have been the
case with militias allied with the regime ignoring the agreed ceasefire and resuming
shelling of the remaining besieged areas.
However, if it does happen it should mean
that the remaining civilians and rebels may
be saved, inshAllh. This may be deemed
as a humanitarian gesture by the regime,
however, it still constitutes ethnic cleansing and forced displacement, which are regarded as international war crimes.
Now, after months of writing, reflecting and

praying the fall of eastern Aleppo is imminent. However, its fall is not a defeat but an
immense victory for the Muslims of eastern
Aleppo. To the very end, the brave, dignified, honorable and steadfast Muslims of
eastern Aleppo fell prostrating to their Lord
rather than at the feet of their oppressors.
They chose death through resistance rather than be subjected to rape, humiliation,
torture and execution. This is the ultimate
bravery and dignity. For this reason we salute these brave souls who have fallen with
honour and respect, rather than cowering
and pleading for mercy from a merciless,
heartless and spineless regime and its fanatics.
Their bravery will live long in the memory
of those who have followed their messages
through social media. Their courage, fortitude and resilience serve as a shining
example and inspiration to the rest of the
worlds Muslims. We are truly blessed to
have had brothers and sisters in Dn who
have taught us a true lesson in etiquette
and behaviour during times of persecution
and oppression..
May Allh bless all the Muslims who stood
up against tyranny in eastern Aleppo;
May Allh grant all the martyrs of Shm the
highest abodes in Jannah;
May Allh recompense all those who suffered, waiting for help and support from
their Muslims brethren which never came,
with a reward far greater than what they
could have ever gained in Dunya.
May Allh bless the people of Shm, forgive them their shortcomings and raise
from amongst them true leaders of the Ummah.
May Allh forgive us for our weaknesses,
our shortcomings and our woefully inadequate help for the people of eastern Aleppo
and Shm.

Kenya seeks Saudi help

to combat terrorism
Kenyan Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Muhammad Abdi Mohamud said
Kenya is seeking to learn from Saudi
Arabias experience in combating terrorism.Speaking at a reception to mark
countrys 53rd independence anniversary in the Saudi capital Riyadh,
the envoy said the two countries had
been victims of terrorism in the past,
and Kenya sought Saudi expertise
and support because the Kingdom
had been successful in combating
terrorism.We stand with the Kingdom
in protecting and defending its people
from all acts of terrorism, radicalism,
militancy and sabotage, Muhammad
said.
We strongly condemn the attacks on
Saudi soil by (Yemens) Houthi militia,
especially the ones targeting the holy
city of Makkah, he added.
The ambassador said Kenya rejected
the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA) passed by the US
Congress in September saying that it
violated the principle of sovereign immunity enjoyed by all countries saying.
To associate Saudi Arabia with the
9/11 terrorist attack in the US is unjustified and unfair, he said at the event
which was attended by the Riyadh
Governor Prince Faisal bin Bandar.Any
breach of this rule would constitute a
threat to world peace and security, including the US, therefore we urge the
US Congress to withdraw the act,
he added.Muhammad said Saudi Arabia remained a beacon of strength in
the Middle East, and had earned respect within the international community for promoting global peace and
stability. He added that Kenya cherished the excellent relations it has had
with Saudi Arabia since diplomatic ties
were established four decades ago.

Lugari Muslims urged to play active role in Da'awa

Muslim residents in Lugari and Likuyani SubCounties of Kakamega County region have
been urged to play an active role in the society
and take the message of Islam to non-Muslim
communities at the grass root.
The Nairobi based Arahma Da'wah and Trust
Organization chairman Khalid Kakai said the
message of Islam need to be disseminated
widely in urban and rural areas so as to convey the pristine teachings of Islam and also
correct the prevailing misconception about Islam and Muslims.
Addressing Muslim faithful at Likuyani Jamia
Mosque grounds in Kakamega County during third annual Qur'an competition held last
week, the chairman said that it was imperative
for da'ees to embrace modern methods in furtherance of da'awa and further abandon those
which have not been effective in projecting the
image of Islam.
''We should move from conservatism which
has nothing to do with Islam and use methods
that will go along in addressing the misconception and negative attributes which are being unleashed on the faith and its followers,
he said.
He however, decried that da'awa (Islamic
propagation) activities have for the most part
been confined to the traditional Muslim areas
and main urban centres leaving out many other parts of this country without a strong presence of Islam.
Khalid deplored this trend saying that the religion of Islam to some appears as 'an exclusive class' meant for particular communities
stressing that this wrong assumption can be
corrected only if the faith is spread to all communities in the country.
The Arahma Trust chair observed that
mosques should take up their role in the society and increase efforts in disseminating the
message of Islam to both Muslims and nonMuslims.
''Da'awa (propagation of Islam) must be felt at
the grassroots and this to be achieved learn-

he said.
On his part the organizing secretary of the
Trust Ali Khisa called on Muslims to play
their role in portraying a good image of Islam by giving support and assistance to
dawah programmes and new reverts as this
will also work on demystifying the mistrust
leveled against the faith and make the new
converts feel part of the Muslim community.

Education, the way forward

Throughout history, the value of education has been universally
well-recognized as a fundamental human right. Education not
only opens doors of opportunity to a better living standard, it also
broadens our views about world affairs and social norms around
the world, helping us become more tolerant and law-abiding citizens. Illiteracy is not caused by a lack of intelligence; rather it is
often a result of outside factors that can be addressed.
Today, a large segment of the Kenyan population - particularly in
Muslim communities - does not know how to read or write. As a
result, they are unable to achieve their goals in life and reach their
full potential in terms of financial stability to support their families.
The first word revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon
him) was Iqra meaning "Read!" This shows the importance of
acquiring knowledge as a Muslim.
Read! In the name of your Lord, Who Has Created; Has Created
man from clot. Read! and your Lord is Most Generous. Who taught
by the pen. Who has taught man that which he knew not. [HolyQuran 96:1 5]
In this spirit, Ummah Foundation has continuously supported over
200 students under the Education Bursary Support. Over the years
we have registered more than 2500 students that have graduated
from this system and are potentially empowered to compete in the
job market and service delivery to the nation. Ummah Foundation
does not only pay fees but we are constantly in touch with the
students and through our Education committee, we monitor their
educational progress periodically and try to remove obstacles
that hinder their progress.
The beneficiaries submit their term reports and an analysis is taken on how each one is performing. The schools have also helped
us in evaluating our performances by getting in contact with us in
case a student drops in his studies or falls ill.
The spread of basic general education among poor, rural popula-

tions is one of Ummahs priorities. This year Ummah Foundation

has already allocated a lot funds that have been disbursed to the
poor and needy students.
Please donate for these efforts; your donations will go a long way
to build a bright future for the next generations that are poor in our
counties. The average amount required by schools per student is
approximately Ksh. 60,000 for tuition and this is a very big amount
that many families cannot afford.
We therefore appeal to all well wishers to make your generous
contributions so that we can bridge the gap that divides the poor
and the affluent. By doing this we are creating a stable society that
will be peaceful and law abiding.
The demand is growing daily and with the meagre resources we
might not be able to handle all the cases we receive. Our priority is given to orphans, poor and needy bright students from low
income families.
We appreciate the donations we receive from our brothers and
other well wishers who have the heart to recognize what Ummah
is doing for the community and they pride being part of this obligation. It is through their contributions that we have been able
to support the aforementioned students. May Allah bless you all.
