The Cayman Islands, a British overseas territory in the Caribbean, is located 150 miles
south of Cuba and 180 miles west of Jamaica. The Islands are made up of three Islands, Grand
Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. The Cayman Islands Economics and Statistic office
have the responsibility of taking a census of the Islands to determine the population and other
factors. The purpose of a census is collecting, analyzing, evaluating and publishing statistical
data regarding the population, demographics, social and economic characteristics.
Data collected in the 2010 Cayman Islands census found that the Islands have a
population density of 53834 inhabitants of which 26,623 are male, 27,211 are female.
Information from the census also showed that there are many nationalities in the Islands such as
the Philippines, Jamaicans, Germans, Italians, Spanish and a host of other Caribbean nationals.
The Cayman Islands census report 2010 states that the total distribution of legally
married couples is 51% of the population, common law partner is 8.7%, divorced couples are
7.7%, and never married couples are 36.3%. Additionally, the census report also shows that
couples married with spouse living elsewhere are 10.9%. Based on the data from the Census
report, it is evident that by these percentages there is a higher rate of never married among
females versus males. The statistics give a clear distinction between Caymanian and NonCaymanians who live on Island showing by percentage that non-Caymanian couples who are
married are 52.9% compared to Caymanian marriages which are 49.2%.
Data from the 2010 census report shows a clear indication of high fertility among the
women of the Islands. The fertility rate amount between the ages of 15-49, show that there was
6,663 live births among women, a percentage of 59.9%. This indicates that almost 60% of all

women are mothers, 4.6 percent are teen mothers between the ages of 15 19 and this figure
rises more than six times for women in their early 20s.
