EXERCISE NO.13
NAME:_____________________________________GROUP NO.____________
HYPOTHESIS TESTING
THE CHI-SQUARE TEST OF ASSOCIATION
INTRODUCTION:
The Chi-Square Test of association is a statistical test
that determines the relationship of two categorical variables. The basic
question answered is to determine a relationship between the column and
the row in a two by two table lay-out.
OBJECTIVE:
This is an INDIVIDUAL EXERCISE. At the end of this exercise, the student will
be able to employ the chi-square test of homogeneity in a sample data set.
OUTPUT:
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Open the SPSS data file of your group.
2. Observe again how data variables are encoded and arranged.
3. To generate a chi-square test. Click descriptive, cross tabs. In the menu
box, click statistics, then click chi square.
4. Run also percentages by clicking column totals and row totals.
ANSWER THE QUESTIONS BELOW
Problem 1
Test the hypothesis that there is an association between sex and
employment. Meaning, there could be more a likelihood that females were
associated with a low or high employment rate or vice versa with males. Use
alpha =.05 level of significance.
Ho:_______________________________________________________
Ha:______________________________________________________
Indicate two tailed or one tailed
Step 2: State the level of significance:____________________
Step 3: State the test statistic to be used:_________________
Step 4: Determine the Critical region: (Use your chi-square table to do this)
State the degrees of freedom and the level of significance. Draw the curve
and label the critical region or area of rejection.
_______3.841_______________________________________________________
Step 5: Perform the X2 calculations
How to do this:
5.1 Click descriptive
5.2 Click cross tabs
5.3 Scoot in the variables. Enter sex into the column box and the
employment in the row box
5.4 Click statistics, Click Chi Square
5.5 Generate percentages (rows and columns) by clicking cells, row
totals, column totals

PROBLEM: 2
Test the hypothesis that there is a relationship between age and family
history of hypertension. Test this at .05 level of significance.
