Reflection Papers must be typed and 2-3 pages in length following the four domain headings
below:
Describe the context in which these artifacts were collected and identify the standard and
competency(s) the artifact represents.
GEDU 529, Human Growth and Learning in the Family and Schools afforded me the
opportunity to demonstrate competency for Standard 1. In this class that I wrote a paper entitled
The Interesting Child This paper speaks directly to Standard 1 in that it allowed me to use the
textual knowledge that I had regarding the role that the family and its beliefs helps to shape the
child. I offer this artifact as I believe that it exhibits competency in both domains of Standard 1.
What do they demonstrate to you about your learning and mastery of the competencies which
fall under this standard?
The above offered artifact, (the interesting child) demonstrates my understanding, and
application of the Brofenbenners systems theory. Competency has also been shown in the
application of each system to this young mans life.
What do these items of evidence tell you about your overall progress toward your personal
goals and your growth as a professional school counselor?
This artifact demonstrates a strong knowledge, understanding, and application of how the
developmental stages that children go through are impacted by all of the systems that have a
hand in their lives. It is clear to me based on the knowledge that I acquired in this class that my
goal of making sure that family members, parents and or guardians are a partner in their childs
academic pursuit is imperative but only possible if the dynamics of the family unit are
understood. As a professional school counselor I believe that as long as I continue to embrace
this understanding of systems and apply it to my interactions with students I will be progress
well. I will become a counselor that is not just conscious of family dynamics and differences, but
one who continuously acts or riding to that understanding.

What are you plans for additional growth in this area?


As I go forward in my pursuit of understanding, and application I will seek out professional
development opportunities that allow me to learn various ways to incorporate the systems
approach to create effective interventions for my students. I will continue to work collaboratively
with all stake holders making sure that appropriate supports are in place to meet all student
needs. As a leader in my building I will share this knowledge and how it can be used in the
classroom to improve teacher student, teacher parent relationships in an effort to increase
academic achievement.
