Plastic behavior of solids, Design Stress, Factor of Safety, Stress concentration factor intension,
bending and torsion, design stress for variable and repeated loads, fatigue stress concentration
factor
Unit 2
Introduction of functional graded material, the concept of functional graded material, history &
origin, functional graded material application & advantages
Unit 3
Processing techniques for functionally graded materials, Powder metallurgy, Sintering process,
Infiltration process, Graded casting process, Centrifugal casting, Tape casting, Thermal spraying,
Vapor deposition Technique, Laser cladding
Unit 4
Fundamentals of vibrations
Simple harmonic motion, combination of two simple harmonic motions, beats, Fourier analysis
Single degree of freedomsystem: Free un-damped vibrations: Equivalent systems linear and
torsional, natural frequency estimation, energy methods.
Damped vibrations: Damping models, structural, coulomb, and viscous damping, critically,
under and over-dampedsystem, logarithmic decrement
Forced vibration : Harmonic excitation, support motion, vibration isolation, critical speeds of
shafts in bending

Common causes of failure, Principles of failure analysis, Fracture mechanics approach tofailure
problems, Techniques of failure analysis, Service failure mechanisms, Ductile andbrittle fracture,
Fatigue fracture, wear failures, Fretting failures, Environmental inducedfailures, Processing
failures (Forging, Casting, Machining etc.), Failure problems in jointsand weldments.

Course objective
To understand the knowledge of various CAD tools
To understand modeling techniques in CAD
Understand the fundamental concepts of FEM.
Understanding the use and knowledge of basic element shapes
To understand the fundamental of optimization techniques.
Unit 1 Modeling and Analysis with CAD
CAD TOOLS: Definition of CAD Tools, Types of system, CAD/CAM system evaluation
criteria, brief treatment of input and output devices. Graphics standard, functional areas of CAD,
Modeling and viewing, software documentation, efficient use of CAD software.
Unit 2 Geometric Modelling: Types of mathematical representation of curves, wire frame
models wire frame entities parametric representation of synthetic curves hermite cubic splines
Bezier curves B-splines rational curves
Surface Modeling: Mathematical representation surfaces, Surface model, Surface entities
surface representation, Parametric representation of surfaces, plane surface, rule surface, surface
