Somali youths vow to consolidate gains made in the ongoing

electoral process
Mogadishu, 16 December 2016 - Somali youths yesterday
convened in Mogadishu to chart ways of enhancing their
participation in politics and contributing to peace building.
The youths resolved to consolidate the gains made in the ongoing
electoral process, which saw young people clinch parliamentary
seats, by actively participating in the affairs of the country.
The workshop, organized by Save Somali Youth Organization
(SASOYO), a local non-governmental organization in conjunction with
the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), is meant to raise
awareness among the youth and encourage them to play an active
role in politics and rebuilding the country.
Representatives from the Federal Government of Somalia; youths
and AMISOM officials attended the one-day event in Mogadishu, part
of a series of sensitization workshops being held countrywide.
Naima Adan Elmi, the SASOYO Chairlady, stressed the importance of
youth playing an active role in the countrys politics and being
involved in peace building initiatives for the benefit of present and
future generations.

The youth have a critical role to play in politics, peace and security
of the country. We have already held similar workshops in Kismayo
and Baidoa, though we have not yet been to Beletweyne but we
intend to go there as part of our plans to cover the country. We will
share with you the experiences and reports from those places, Ms.
Naima stated.
Hailing SASOYO for role in sensitizing the youth on political
participation, AMISOM Gender Officer, Ahmed Mane, urged young
people to take serious interest in the affairs of the country and make
their voices heard.
It is very important that the youth play a role in politics and in
rebuilding the country and I hope that you will benefit from todays
discussions on how you can contribute to your country, interact with
young politicians and stay away from extremism, Ms. Mane
observed.
Hafsa Abdiwelli Mohamed, a participant, concurred with the
sentiments expressed, saying it was up to the youths to take charge
of their destiny, by making use of their numbers.
We came here today to discuss how to get the youth to participate
more in politics, peace and security, given that the youth form 75
percent of the population. We need to participate a lot more in
politics so that we can influence things and cause change since we
are the majority, Ms. Hafsa, a participant noted.
Another participant, Abdullahi Hussein Osoble, thanked the
organizers for organizing the meeting and enabling youths to
convene and share ideas on issues affecting them.
This workshop today is about how the youth can participate in
politics and peace building. The youth face a lot of challenges
coupled with the perception that they are the cause of the problems
the country is facing. It is therefore necessary for the youth rise up
and change that perception, said Mr. Osoble.
AMISOM has been in the forefront in encouraging youths to take up
politics, actively participate in peacebuilding and create civic
forums.
