1) Climate & Energy

Transform the way the world uses energy because it impacts the climate, and the climate impacts
everyone. Starts from reducing energy consumption by 50%.
Initiatives:
1.

Worldwide Incident management system WIMS: has led to continuous improvement

related to increased awareness of responsibilities, understanding of the holistic system and
more consistent reporting requirements for 3Ms 200+ global operations.

Measures: 3m measures the amount of violations with the help of integrated WIMS
software, and it helps them record outstanding liabilities, which is categorized as
environmental remediation costs
Target:
31st December 2015 , environmental remediation costs : $43 million
31st December 2017 , environmental remediation costs : <$15 million

Improving Energy Efficiency: 3M has identified a broad approach to managing our energy

footprint, which includes evaluating the energy impact of new products and
manufacturing processes being developed in our laboratories; new equipment and
facilities being designed and built by our engineering staff; and reducing the energy
footprint of our manufacturing and administrative facilities.
Measures: 3M conducts product carbon footprint evaluations as part of the product Life
Cycle Assessment process
Target: Since 2002, 3M has reduced Scope 1 GHG emissions by 77.5%, and it has

provided a direct and immediate benefit to the environment. This reduction is even more
impressive when one considers it is an absolute reduction
By December 2017,3M has further committed itself to reduce Scope 1 GHG by another
50%
3.

Increase the use of renewable energy: 3m has committed itself to increase renewable
energy to its consumption.
Measures: Internal auditing of energy consumption is done annually.
Target : 800,000 MWh of renewable energy use will be added globally. The primary

sources of renewable energy will be wind and solar.

Support empowerment and enrichment to provide people everywhere the opportunity to live life to
its fullest by providing 100% education in 3M supported communities.
