STANDARD LESSON PLAN

Language & Literacy- Mouse Puppets

Objective(s)
After reading the assigned book students will be able to discuss the difference
between living in a city and living in the country. They will be able to list other
common differences type of house, food, and clothing. They will be able to
comprehend the benefits of living in both locations and dictate them to the class.
IV.
Procedures
After reading the book Town Mouse, Country Mouse talk about the difference
between living in a town verses the country. Draw a chart on the white board and
list them according to location. Ask for volunteers to draw what a town mouse and
a country mouse. Ask the students to line up against the wall. Ask which students
would like to live in a town or the country, and divide the class into two groups.
Students will work together creating a town and individual puppets to present at
the of the week.

Materials
Reading material Town Mouse, Country Mouse by Jan Brett
Gray gloves or felt for the students to use as puppets.
Pompoms for mouse noses, scissors, glue, and yarn for decorating individual
puppets.
White board and marker for listing the differences.
Random scraps of cardboard and other supplies. Allow students to explore.
VI.
Grouping Structures
First start out with all students in circle time at their gathering area. Proceed with
reading and discussion of material read. After discussion separate the class into two
groups based off of which students would prefer to live in a town or the country.
Students will continue to work on their individual puppets back at their tables than
then rejoining their groups for presentation.
VII. Modifications
Students can pair up with an opposite student who has chosen a different place to
live. They can work together to discuss and remind each other of their difference
in appearance for their puppet.
VIII. Assessment
Students will rejoin their group at the end of the week for a presentation of their

individual puppets and the town that they chose to be apart. They will be able to
list the differences and commonalities. Each student will openly state why they
chose one place to live other the other. They will be able to make relevant
responses to direct questions asked by teacher.
