Is Milk a Blessing or a Curse?

If you turn on TV, you will notice that there are all varieties of
milk advertisements. For example, Milk gives you a lift all
morning, Milk for health, Milk daily and so on. In our daily lives,
bread with milk is an easy breakfast, and tasty as well. Its
recommended that people should drink three cups of milk daily to
get enough protein and strong bone. However, currently, Is milk a
Blessing or a Curse is sparkling a hot debate. Frankly, milk is a
curse. There are some disadvantages to keep in mind.
The first disadvantage is that milk contains hormones which
increase the risk of developing cancers. As everyone knows, in the
period of women lactation, estrogens can accelerate breast to
produce more milk for new born babies. Dairy farmers also apply
this way to modern dairy, and they put hormones in the diet of milkproducing cows to increase milk production. Dairy cows are usually
pregnant and continue to lactate during the latter half of pregnancy,
when the concentration of estrogens in blood, and hence in milk,
increases. (Ganmma and Sato, 1028-1037) However, if Human
beings absorb in these hormones will increase their risks of
developing cancers. Studies show that milk was most closely
correlated with the incidence of ovarian cancer and corpus uteri
cancer.(Ganmma and Sato, 1028-1037)
The second disadvantage of drinking too much milk will cause
high level of cholesterol. A 1-cup serving of whole milk contains 9
grams of total fat, which includes 6 grams of saturated
fat.(.Ipatenco, 2014) If you choose your milk from the whole-fat
section of the dairy case, you could be unwittingly adding excess
saturated fat to your diet that could lead to high level of cholesterol,
a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease.(Ludwing and Willett,
2013) According to The American Heart Association, limiting your
saturated fat intake to less than 7 percent of your total daily
calories.(.Ipatenco, 2014) So reducing dietary cholesterol is a good
way to promotes heart health.
The third disadvantage is that milk is related to iron absorption
problem for small children. Studies show that there is an inhibitor
effect of milk on the absorption of the iron present in the other foods
ingested by the child. The relative participation of cows milk in the
childs diet showed a significant positive association with risk of
anemia in children under six years old, regardless of the density of
iron in the diet.( Levy-Costa and Monteiro, 2004) For this reason,

the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that

babies under 12 months old should not be given cow's milk at all
and children under 5 should be limited to three or fewer 8-ounce
servings of milk per day.(Coila, 2016)
Finally, milk causes stomach upset. Milk contains a large
amount of lactose which causes lactose intolerance, especially in
Asia. It is a group of symptoms including diarrhea, flatus, belching
and bloating that patients experience after consuming lactose,
whether they are lactose maldigesters or not.(Szilagyi, 2016)
Therefore, in light of this research, one who suffers from lactose
intolerance had better stay away from milk.
Opponents of milk is a blessing say that man has been
drinking cows milk for around 2000 years without apparent
harm.(Ganmma and Sato, 1028-1037) Milk is a good source of
nutrition. In the past, maybe milk was safe and nutritious. And milk
made men. Nevertheless, the milk that we are now consuming is
quite different from that consumed 100 years ago.(Ganmma and
Sato, 1028-1037) As time goes by, human beings have evolved a lot
too. In addition, the role of milk in human nutrition is not as
important as we think. Its reported that humans have no nutritional
requirement for cows milk. (Ludwing and Willett, 788) Besides,
human beings are the only species who drink cows milk after
weaning, while other mammals dont need it. Why do human beings
have to drink cows milk to get nutrition? Actually, many other foods
can also provide us with protein and calcium, such as soy bean, all
kind of nuts and so on.
In conclusion, there are many disadvantages to show that milk is
a curse, instead of a blessing. Certainly, milk is a good resource of
protein, calcium and VD. Anyhow, we should still be aware of the
risk of drinking milk. So with the view of health, its better for us to
give up drinking milk.
