These toys are made from small branches of trees available in nearby forests.
The major species locally are called Ale-mara (Wrightia tinctoria) and Doodhi, these are yellowish white in colour. Being soft it adopts to the

The entire Production Mechanism is on the skills of wood turning whether shaping or lacquering. It is done on two levels, one being
smaller hand lathes installed in homes. The family makes small components and sell them to larger units. The industry engages about 6000
people directly and indirectly having different skill levels
The bigger units employ the labours and operate with motorised lathes. One single motor runs multiple lathes.
The lacquer mostly comes from Gujrat, it is colour blended and converted in to sticks. The lacquering is also done on lath itself.
The peculiar blend of hand skill tradition, rural development issues, historical attachments and simplicity of the process has made this city a
potent subject of study by NGOs, Designers and various state and central Govt agencies. There are so many videos and articles on the inter net.
From last 50 years various subsidies and training programs are been conducted.
In-spite of all this attention this cluster industry is not prospering. The new generation is not picking up this practice. Being near to Bangalore the
population has easy access to education and 85% of the youth is literate, they get suitably employed in IT sector.
The MSME and skilled labours have sound understandings of production management and can conceive the products from any suggestions.
They need to acquire next level of technology which compliments their hand skills.

The ideal conditions shall be created where MSME can afford to pay each worker minimum of
now.
Economics:
By a rough estimate the total procurement cost of produce from about 20 fully operational, 50 semi-operational units and about 1000 registered
members with various govt. is Rs. 12 Cr per annum.
In the retail market it fetches about Rs. 30 Cr.
CONCLUSIONS:
1. Planetary rotation multiple bed Lathes:
To maximize the production the Expert Designer feels the need of developing design, which can be carried by the blades which have multiple
contact points on the bed of latha. Minimum four to five contacts and four beds in one single loop. Continiuos process where two workers,
where one loads the bed and the other keeps on turning, will insure that no time is wasted in removing and reloading the next piece.
Two workers can produce the entire work of one day in just one hour.
This will facilitate to produce different designs in smaller quantities. There is always an edge in retailing, where the end user will have the
multiple choices to select from.

The MSME gathering was provided with the analysed findings of NAS, which are crucial for MSME's business
development.
Major concern is under capacity utilisation of their installed infrastructure, which is at present averages out to be at
20 % only.
Main reasons are not having products which can be proactively marketed, not having trained human resources
at middle management level, non suitability of present distribution network for their merchandise and lesser
knowledge to handle wood as primary raw material.
Dr. Ghoshal provided the insight of the Design Clinic Scheme and its relevance to sort out the issues cited above.
Mr. Adil Shakoor is he having the manufacturing unit of furnishing and Interior Contracting in Dubai from last 15 years.
He is undertaking the fixturing and fitting of retail stores of almost all the global retail chains in Middle East countries.
He shared his experience with the gathering about his contacts with the leading Design firms from U.K. and how their
designs are helping him to expand his business. He also told them about quality perception of developing finishing lines
which is must to survive the imported products from in India. Mr. Adil is now in India is busy in setting up Asia's largest
