MACRO/ CLUSTER Level Study.

Channapatna town of Lathes and Lacquer.
It is about 65 KM towards Mysore from Bangalore in Ramnagar District.
A hub of micro and small scale units (MSMe) which make lacquered wooden toys (vegetable dyes) also called the city of toys, a must visit for
tourist on Bangalore and Mysore circuit.

Historic and Traditional relevance of Channpatna toy making.

Tipu Sultan who had the personal fascination for the small toys, brought in Persian artisans to make them, who settled in this region under his
patronage.
This craft enjoys the protection of GI certification under WTO initiative and administered by the state govt.

Production process:
These toys are made from small branches of trees available in nearby forests.
The major species locally are called Ale-mara (Wrightia tinctoria) and Doodhi, these are yellowish white in colour. Being soft it adopts to the
steel blades shaping. The grain- less surface of these wood accepts the bright colours of lacquered sticks.
As Design experts we feels the need to develop a business model, which has Design progression and differentiation to fully utilise, the skills be
No.3

The entire Production Mechanism is on the skills of wood turning whether shaping or lacquering. It is done on two levels, one being
smaller hand lathes installed in homes. The family makes small components and sell them to larger units. The industry engages about 6000
people directly and indirectly having different skill levels
The bigger units employ the labours and operate with motorised lathes. One single motor runs multiple lathes.
The lacquer mostly comes from Gujrat, it is colour blended and converted in to sticks. The lacquering is also done on lath itself.
The peculiar blend of hand skill tradition, rural development issues, historical attachments and simplicity of the process has made this city a
potent subject of study by NGOs, Designers and various state and central Govt agencies. There are so many videos and articles on the inter net.
From last 50 years various subsidies and training programs are been conducted.
In-spite of all this attention this cluster industry is not prospering. The new generation is not picking up this practice. Being near to Bangalore the
population has easy access to education and 85% of the youth is literate, they get suitably employed in IT sector.
The MSME and skilled labours have sound understandings of production management and can conceive the products from any suggestions.
They need to acquire next level of technology which compliments their hand skills.
No.4

A Co-Operative Marketing format will get the workers

share from retailing (MRP) of the product.

The ideal conditions shall be created where MSME can afford to pay each worker minimum of
now.

Rs.15,000/- per month as against Rs. 6000/-

Economics:
By a rough estimate the total procurement cost of produce from about 20 fully operational, 50 semi-operational units and about 1000 registered
members with various govt. is Rs. 12 Cr per annum.
In the retail market it fetches about Rs. 30 Cr.

CONCLUSIONS:
1. Planetary rotation multiple bed Lathes:
To maximize the production the Expert Designer feels the need of developing design, which can be carried by the blades which have multiple
contact points on the bed of latha. Minimum four to five contacts and four beds in one single loop. Continiuos process where two workers,
where one loads the bed and the other keeps on turning, will insure that no time is wasted in removing and reloading the next piece.
Two workers can produce the entire work of one day in just one hour.
This will facilitate to produce different designs in smaller quantities. There is always an edge in retailing, where the end user will have the
multiple choices to select from.

2. DESIGN CLINIC SCHEME:

Under this format a unit can be motivated to undertake the activities for rapid prototyping which will provide the direction of Design
intervention, Tool development and Skill up-gradation.

3. Design differentiation, Different market segments, Developed technology and Marketing format can bring new chapter to this
cluster.
The Emerging Opportunity Mapping is discussed in Micro level study of a single unit.

MACRO LEVEL- STUDY

Cluster MYSORE Wooden handicraft Industry.
Historical city about 180 Km from Bangalore.
An ideal tourist city with numerous historical monuments, a fulcrum of Karnataka's culture and history.
Souvenirs buying ritual of tourists has given the encouragement to locals to engage in making and marketing of handicrafts.
There are scores of associations which assist the people working in this sector.
Under the patronage of ruling dynasty of Wodyars the city craftsmen have developed varied classifications of craft skills i,e. wood in wood inlay,
ivory in wood inlay, carvings in wood.
The Mysore art of Marquetry occupies prominent place in wood carving. The district's relatively better forest cover provides enough raw material,
they still employ traditional skills to carve, inlay, veneer, paint and lacquer articles in wood. This has moved from to artefacts to furniture and
architectural applications.
Wood inlaid panels for wall decoration to table tops depict landscapes, pastoral scenes, elephant herds, birds and religious mythology.
Some of the ivory inlaid masterpieces are preserved in South Kensington Museum London.
It also specialises in sandalwood carvings. This soft material is used to make charming art pieces of extremely delicate details those are required to
make figures of god and goddesses. Apart from this lots of personal items like jewel box, walking sticks from rose wood are made.
No.11

Processes
Wood inlay on flat surfaces and on furniture parts.
After a design is selected it is routed on the wooden surface and pieces of different and and contrasting coloured wood is fitted in to depression.
It is the skill of matching numerous small pieces of veneers to form a design or picture. These are then assembled and glued on a larger section
or a supporting piece.
Normally it is done on Teak or Rose wood. For different in-filling colours, Blue ash, Sampige, Madi, Patanga, Red sandal wood and Hunsue are
used.

Sandal wood Craft:

This has emerged as one of the major gifting industry, perhaps it is the best case of value addition by skills and design intervention.
Challenges and scope for Design opportunities and business development
1. The skilled labour for this industry is thinning out, There are only six major players in wood inlay segments as compared to 500 about twenty
years back.
2. The sandal wood craft needs more parameters of Design differentiation's. Most of the designs are conceived by the craftsman and are
repeated throughout the retail outlets.

Suggestions.
1. To set up a training centre with the initiatives of MSMe units and retailers.
2. To Create a pool of market tested prototypes for both the sectors.

Mechanised MSME units in Wood and Engineered wood segments:

The demands of Construction for Housing, Retail, Education and Commercial sector increased four times commencing 1995 of the developing
India.
The units engaged in manufacturing Furniture, Building and Interiors fixtures etc. experienced a business wave which they could not cope up with
their existing set up.
From 1995 to 2005 the units multiplied by 100 times and most of them multiplied their outputs by installing machines.
With this fast track demand they could not rationalise growth. though the installed capacity were increased but the support system did not
improve.
The available surplus income of middle class, liberal imports of furniture and allied products and emerging concept of improved life style made the
industry to generate an estimated turn over of Rs. 3500 Cr. annually at a growth rate of 16%.
The units can be divided as per to their geographic Locations
1. Metro cities: Bangalore (1000 units)and Hyderabad /Secundrabad. ( 500 units). They process 80% EW panels balance Wood.
2. Tier II cities:Mysore( 250 Unit), Hubli (100 Units), Belgaum ( 200 Units). They process equal amount of EW panels and Wood.
3. Towns: Alnawer ( 25 Units). They process 80% wood.

No.14

EW Board production process:

The standard boards are cut in desired shapes, all the exposed edges of board are either edge bended or post formed, these pieces are joined
together with CKD fittings. The products are packed in flat positions for transport and assembled on site. They do not require any polishing or
finishing as most of them are made out of pre-laminated finished materials.

The major machines required in this segment.

Panel sizer and cutter, Boring Machine, Edge bending machine, Post forming.

The similarities in the EW Board Centric Units.

1. Each one purchases the boards, hardware, fittings and fixtures from local dealers or the company Go-downs. The procurement cost to each
unit is almost same.
2. The cost of labour is identical.
3. The manufacturing process in EW processing is common to all.
4. Machine consumables and maintenance and operations are similar.
5. The production costs for each unit only vary by rentals, cost of capital and non utility of waste.
6. The selling price of the products only differs by the profit margins the unit loads on the costs.
No.15

How Wood Centric units handle Wood Processing? and production process.
These have facilities of saw milling and purchase the wood in logs from auction depots or open markets.
Very few of them have seasoning and treatment facilities.
The logs are cut in to planks and further converted or shaped into desired components on different machines. and assembled together.

The major machines required in this segment.

Circular saw cutter, Vertical band saw, planer and sizer, pillar drill machines, radial saw, sanders and spray equipment with booth.
Very few units have proper finishing lines.

METROS. Bangalore & Hyderabad.
Since 1995 the maximum growth in this industry segment has happened in Metros.
In the span of 15 years about 1000 units in Bangalore and 760 units in Hydrabad were established Under MSME.
The majors of Wood working machinery's from Italy, Germany, Taiwan and China either set up their manufacturing units, training centre or
sales office in Bangalore.
Nos. of new board manufacturers also joined the bandwagon to supply the raw materials. The imports of boards and timber also fuelled the
imaginations of the Industry.
The leading hardware companies from Europe also established there presence in India.
Some of the units also got the franchisee of leading furniture manufacturers for India.
The major source of labour is migrant carpenters and polishers from northern state of Rajasthan, U.P., and Bihar.
The most neglected area was the use of timber for two main reasons, limited knowledge to handle the basic properties of wood and wood
finishing. This was complimented by the then belief of not using wood to save the forest cover.
The maximum demand has been in workstations for offices, wardrobes and Kitchen units in home segment.
The machinery installed in EW Wood segment is mechanised up to 85%, and does not require hand-skills.
There is shortage of machine operators and trained management HR in this sector.

Organized at IWST, Bangalore
Institute of Wood Science and Technology (IWST), has recently conducted a 'Need Assessment Survey (NAS)' with the
support of a Design Consultant under Design Awareness Programme (DAP) sponsored by National Institute of Design
(NID) under Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Govt. of India for the benefit wood and engineered
wood based industries in the states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. IWST has taken up this survey to assess the
current status of wood based industries in these two states and identify the areas with possible new creative innovations
in this field wherein new design interventions can be introduced for product and process development. The programme is
focused to develop a holistic map of wood based units by exploring through industrial functions and activities. During
NAS, about 50 units were visited and analyzed. As per NID-MSME guidelines, this Institute conducted a 5-day Design
Clinic Scheme (DCS) workshop for Wood & Engineering Wood Working Units from 10-14 Sept., 2012 involving experts,
business and industry representatives of various wood and engineered wood based industries.
