First Semester 2011/2012 Drive Systems 0908582 Mechatronics Engineering Department Dr. Lutfi Al-Sharif Midterm Exam 27th November 2011, 17:00-18:30 Name: Registration Number: Use the back pages if you need more space Assume the acceleration due to gravity as 9.81 m/s2 if needed. 1. DC motor (15 marks) DC Motor Speed-Torque Curves In developing the equations below, use the following constant symbols if necessary: K1 for the back e.m.f. with units of [V(Wb)-1(rads-1)-1] K2 for the torque constant with units of [(Nm)(Wb)-1(A)-1] Ignore the armature inductance. Starting from first principles, develop the set of equations that relate the torque and speed from a d.c. motor for different values of the armature voltage, Va, at constant field excitation. Then draw the curves on a speed torque plane. On the diagrams mark the starting torque and the no load speed. Also explain how a variable speed drive can control the speed of a constant torque load. Flywheels (10 marks)
2. Design a flywheel that weighs 34 kg (maximum) and is made of Aluminium such that the inertia is maximised. The maximum diameter of the flywheel should not exceed 500 mm and the maximum thickness should not exceed 100 mm. Find the inertia of the flywheel. Sketch a rough sketch of the flywheel showing all dimensions on it. (10 marks) The density of Aluminium is 2700 kgm-3.

Switching (25 marks)
3. A bipolar junction transistor is used to switch a resistive load, as shown below. Assume the following (25 marks):
Transistor thermal resistance junction to case: 0.5 C/W
Transistor thermal resistance case to air: 10 C/W Supply voltage is 200 V dc. VCEsat= 1.5 V Switch on time: 3 s Switch off time: 6 s. Switching frequency: 15 kHz. Answer the following questions:
a) What would the junction temperature be? (8 marks) b) Is this a problem? Why? (2 marks) c) What can be done to solve this problem? You need to give specific numbers in your answer. (8 marks) d) Why cannot this load be controlled using a transistor operated in the active region? Explain in details with numbers. (7 marks) Allow for on-state, off state losses as well as switching losses.

Pump driven by a DC motor (25 marks)
5. A DC shunt motor is used to drive a positive displacement pump (hydrostatic). The system has the following characteristics.
The pump has to pump water up a distance of 25.62 m.
The pump displaces 5 L (litres) of water per revolution. The pump is directly coupled to the DC motor Assume a pump efficiency of 80%. The DC motor has the speed torque curve shown in Figure 1.
Answer the following questions (25 marks):
What is the torque required from the pump? (10 marks) Is this a constant torque or variable torque load? (3 marks) Draw the load speed torque curve on the graph shown on the next page. (5 marks) Graphically find the stable operating point and the running speed. (4 marks) What is the flow rate of water that would be achieved? (3 marks) Hint: The power delivered by the pump is the product of the pressure and the flow rate.
