This lesson plan aims to teach 7th grade students about dispelling stereotypes through discussion and a quiz about common stereotypes. On the first day, students will discuss stereotypes, take the quiz individually and then discuss in groups. The class will then review answers and discuss what was surprising. On the second day, students will discuss the importance of accepting diversity without biases. Activity: Dispelling Stereotypes: What Do We Really Know About Other Cultures Grade(s):7th Grade ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors (Domain/Standard):

Counselor will begin lesson by starting a discussion about different cultures and stereotypes associated with those cultures. Student will be asked to share common stereotypes they may know or have experienced in the past. (5 mins)
2. Counselor will distribute Common Stereotypes Quiz to each student.
Students will be given 5 to 10 mins to complete quiz. 3. Break the students up into groups of 3 or 4 so they can discuss answers and talk about the differences they had in taking the quiz. Answer these questions specifically: Was the quiz easy? How many questions do you think you had right? What questions gave you the most trouble? (10 15min) 4. Review answer to the quiz and have class discussion answering questions and discussing what students found surprising. By a show of hands, tally which questions received the most wrong answers. (5 7 mins). DAY 2 5. Discuss in small groups the importance of accepting diversity and acknowledging that we will not always know about other cultures. Having an open mind and being willing to learn about other cultures without biases is the key to dispelling stereotypes. (5mins)
Plan for Evaluation, How will each of the following be evaluated?
Process Data: Approximately 20-25 students in grade 7 will participate in this 40-minute lesson during Penn Time. Lesson will be given during the beginning of the first marking period. Perception Data: Individual response to Common Stereotypes quiz. Small group discussion on quiz. Entire class discussion reviewing quiz and tally correct and incorrect answers to each question. Outcome Data: It will be expected that at least 85% of students will report learning something new about different cultures. Students will be able to identify biases in society and be aware of stereotypes that effect members of the school and community. Follow Up: Students will complete a review of quiz and their personal results. This assignment will be handed in to Penn Time period teacher.
