0:00.0 - 0:13.0 I'll start with the first question which is some definitions of
volunteering work. So when you hear the word volunteer what is the first thing t
hat comes to mind. If anyone's got any first impressions?
Facilitator
0:13.0 - 0:14.0 Giving up your time
Kosta
0:14.0 - 0:16.0 Unpaid Glenys
0:16.0 - 0:23.0 Doing something that's generally considered to be good for the c
ommunity
Peter
0:23.0 - 0:28.0 Giving back to the community
Peta
0:28.0 - 0:34.0 So you've got two sides here where your giving up something of y
ourself but you're also giving back
Facilitator
0:34.0 - 0:44.0 Also things with wider causes like global warming and helping th
ird world countries
Cecilia
0:44.0 - 0:48.0 "So things that you think you feel passionate about, that you wa
nt to help with?"
Facilitator
0:48.0 - 0:56.0 Often things you wouldn't normally be involved in.....you wouldn
't do in your day-to-day lifestyle
Mat
0:56.0 - 1:07.0 You think of the types of people but are there fields that lend
themselves to volunteering? Perhaps organizations that come to mind
Facilita
tor
1:07.0 - 1:17.0 Often care places like World Vision.. and a lot of people go abr
oad to do volunteering...often caring for others in some kind of charity work
Mat
1:17.0 - 1:51.0 I suppose you could consider volunteer work in local communities
...like football clubs and that sort of thing without volunteer workers running
the boundary and manning the canteen...those clubs don't survive they'd have to
charge so much for their players or membership that they wouldn't be viable.
Glenys
1:51.0 - 1:57.0 So people who realise they need to volunteer to make this thing
happen Facilitator
1:57.0 - 2:19.0 Talking about sporting clubs at the grass roots level where you'
ve got a young kid aspiring to be a top football player but that cannot really h
appen without the grass root clubs ..if they're not there then how does one prod
uce the talent for them to go to the next level?
Glenys
2:19.0 - 2:34.0 Wouldn't necessarily regard doing unpaid work with sporting club
s as volunteering work... to me volunteer work has that 'community good' context
Peter
2:34.0 - 2:43.0 (But it's a sporting club so it's generally for a whole district
)
Cecilia
2:43.0 - 2:59.0 I know what your saying but it doesn't hold the same volunteerin
g connotations for me as working for a charity. Generally people who are volunte
ering..running boundary lines...are doing it because their kid is in the club or
something like that. Peter
2:59.0 - 3:17.0 "That's true, but if you look at many country areas - I shouldn'
t say it like this - but the only thing that defines them apart from the job and
industry they're in is the football club as a social point." Kosta
3:17.0 - 3:45.0 This question missed due to jump in tape
3:45.0 - 4:06.0 I guess my final question is about being rewarded for volunteeri
ng. If you were to volunteer - or for people who do currently volunteer - do you
think they should receive some sort of reward? Facilitator
4:06.0 - 4:16.0 I think some sort of recognition...I can't imagine it being more
than a certificate of appreciation but I think that would be worthwhile.
Peter
4:16.0 - 4:32.0 I think that's the whole basis of volunteering. You're not expec
ting...you get back more satisfaction that you helped somebody or helped some or
ganization in some situation I think that's the whole point of volunteering
Glenys
4:32.0 - 4:38.0 I think seeing the outcome of your work is the reward. Peta
4:38.0 - 4:46.0 I think it would be nice to have some sort of recognition but it
's not a motivating factor
Peter

4:46.0 - 5:14.0 "Well it's not the motivating factor but it would be good I supp
ose if you had some government body ...state government or federal government ma
ybe...seeing the work that a particular organization is doing ...and which you'r
e a part of...and giving recognition to the organization and then you can say...
""well look the company that I am doing volunteer work for are being recognized
by the government so I must be doing something right""."
Kosta
5:14.0 - 5:22.0 "The organization is saving the government from having to do it
themselves anyway. ""[Laughter, all agree]""" Peter
5:22.0 - 5:29.0 What do you feel about that...that volunteering is replacing som
ething the government should be doing anyway? Facilitator
5:29.0 - 5:36.0 I think it is true but it shouldn't have to be the case but it i
s the case that volunteering is a requirement. Peter
