From the year 800 A.D, music has evolved and developed in many different
ways over 6 main musical periods. These different stages in musics history all have
their own distinguishing features such as the type of instruments used, the texture
of the music and the sound that is created through different methods of playing.
The first significant period of music that has been recorded is the medieval period.
The medieval period started from around 800 A.D and is thought to have
ended at around 1450 A.D. this period of music can be split into two different styles:
sacred and secular. Sacred music was mainly church music and as the church
regarded all instruments, bar the organ, as pagan, most of the music was vocal.
Sacred (or church music) was known as plainsong or plainchant. This has four
features, which allows the person listening to identify it: a single lined melody; sung
in Latin; free rhythm (no specific time signature, bar lines or regular rhythms); no
key (modal); usually sung accapella. Other chants in the medieval period are sung
in an antiphonal style (one choir singing in alteration with the other) and response
style where the whole choir answers one or more soloists. Whereas all of these
styles of music were performed in church, secular or non-religious music was
performed everyday outside of the church by musicians who would entertain
nobles, townspeople and peasants with their singing, dancing, acting and
acrobatics. There were many instruments used by these entertainers including:
Shawm a double reeded instrument with powerful tone and ancestor of
the oboe
Cornett made from ivory with trumpet like mouthpiece and finger holes
like a recorder
Medieval lute guitar like instrument with four strings
Fiddle large viola like instrument with flat bridge to play two strings at
the same time
Pipe and tabor a pipe and two headed drum played by the same pe...

society, it has much to offer to this society as a whole and as a group of individuals.
Classical music is a means of relaxation and mind enhancement for the individual as
well as entertainment for all.
Classical music is used by many as a way to relax and escape everyday
chaos. After a long, hard day at work, classical music is often played during the ride
home to alleviate built up, work related stress. The soft instrumental sounds of
classical music such as the piano, flute, and violin are pleasing to the ears, and they
are able to carry away the tensions of the day. Aside from its ability to provide
relaxation, classical music enables a person to escape from reality. Because
classical music lacks harsh lyrics and images of violence, it allows a person to
imagine his own perfect world. Not only does classical music provide relief from
the stress and chaos of society, but it also allows for intellectual enhancement.
It has been said that classical music enhances the mind of the listener.
Some claim that listening to classical music improves test scores, IQ levels, and the
healing process. Because classical music has been linked to higher SAT scores,
many teenagers today choose to listen to this genre of music. Also, many pregnant
women and new mothers decide to listen to classical music because they believe,
and studies have shown, that classical music can help improve the IQ levels of
young children and infants.
Studies have also been conducted that show a correlation between classical
music and medical patients healing time. Some medical professionals
Music
Music has been around for many of years that has shaped and changed
society in many ways. We see so many rhythmic organizations, its endless.
Throughout the majority of tones and styles to pick from a song, critiquing a song
can be difficult at times. The musical piece I will be examining is an album by
Quincy Jones, called Walking in Space. This album features 6 tracks of mellow jazz
that can be played in any type of environments. The tracks that stood out with
different styles are 2, 3, and 6, which are the tracks I will discuss in order.
Track 2, which is titled, Walking in Space, is a 12 minute 5 seconds musical
piece. This song has a clear consistent 2 beat pattern that can easily be
distinguished. Although at times this song does have many transitions, meaning
instruments heard at one point of the song might instantaneously change to singing
or another instrument. The instruments that can be distinguished are the following;
Flute, Symbols, Bass, Guitar, Piano, Trumpet, and Drums. Along with the
instruments, a lady sings in a

detached margato style, which is high pitch singing to low pitch singing at
times. What is so unique about this piece is the texture, which is how the
instruments are played together. The song starts off in a low relaxed tune with a
Guitar, Bass, and Trumpet. A lady starts to sing with a rich sounding voice for the
first minute and 30 seconds of the song and switches suddenly to instruments being
the dominant sound. Every other minute or two the song switches to different
instruments such as the Flute, Trumpet, and Piano where one is the dominant
sound. Finally reaching the end of the song it repeats back to the lady singing in her
rich full voice. I associate this song with more of a Highlife type style, which is night
club music with similar instrument mentioned previously. Overall the whole song
has a wide range of many different sound levels from high to low w...
