Mechanics Set III

1.

A mass m1 is moving at constant speed vo towards a

a stationary mass m2 on a frictionless surface. A
(massless) spring with spring constant k is attached to
m2. What is the maximum compression of the spring
during the process of collision of the two masses?
2.
A ball with mass m is attached to the wall by a massless spring with spring
constant k. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the ball and the surface is .
The ball stays at point O when the spring is at its natural length. Suppose the ball is
released at position A located at distance d at the left of O at time zero. What is the
allowed range of values of where the ball stops at the left of O after passing through
O exactly twice?

3. An object with a right-angled triangle cross-section ABC is placed on a

horizontal surface. The mass of the object is M. The angle between AB and AC
is . The height of B is h. A small mass m is placed at A, which is at the bottom
of the inclined plane AB. Initially, both objects are stationary. The mass m is then
given an initial speed vo along the direction of AB. Assuming that the friction
between the inclined plane and the mass as well as the friction between ABC and
the horizontal surface are negligible, what is the minimum value of vo such that
the small mass can reach point B by sliding up?
4. A pair of identical beads, each with mass m ,are constrained to move on a smooth circular ring of
mass M that stands vertically on the floor. Initially the beads are resting on the top of the ring. They
then start to slide down. A) Under what conditions involving (m/M) will the ring jump from the
floor? B) Assuming the conditions in Part A are satisfied determine the location of the beads when
the ring jumps up.
5. A pingpong ball with uniform density and radius R (originally resting on a smooth desk) is hit by
a horizontal force F at height h (<2R). The force lasts for a small time t. Immediately afterward, the ball is found to roll
without sliding. What is h?
6.A small ring with radius r =10 cm falls on a desk from a height h = 20 cm. Initially, the ring
is rotating upon its axis with angular frequency o = 21 rads-1 (see figure on the left). Assume
that the collision between the ring and desk is inelastic such that the ring stays on the desk after
collision. How long will it takes for the ring to stop rotating if the coefficient of friction
between the ring and desk is = 0.3.
7. On an inclined plane of 30o, a wooden block of mass m2 = 4 kg is connected with a
solid cylinder of mass m1 = 8 kg and radius r = 5 cm. The coefficient of kinetic
friction between the wooden block and the inclined plane is = 0.2. When the system
is released, the wooden block slides and the cylinder rolls down the inclined plane.
What is the acceleration of the system?
8. A block of mass m slides on a frictionless table. It is constrained to move inside a ring of radius
L that is fixed to the table. At t = 0, the block is moving along the inside of the ring (in the
tangential direction) with speed v0. The coecient of friction between the block and the ring is .
Assume 0. Find the angular position, and the speed of the block at later times.
