Section I
INSTALLATION

The 4 l/16 11 -10_,000 psi LWS is a Ram Type Blowout Preventer as

defined in API Bulletin Dl3 entitled "Installation and Use of
Blowout Preventer Stacks and Accessory Equipment"_, and should
be installed as recommended in that bulletin.
Install the VilS Blowout Preventer (BOP) right side up as it
will not hold rated working pressure if installed upside down.
The folloNing checks can be made to determine that the BOP is
installed rig..~t side up (see Figure I):
1.

Externally - The side outlets are below the rams. If they

appear to be above the center line of a cylinder_, the BOP
is upside dmm.

2.

Internally - Tne skids in the ram compartments are below

the re.ms and the ram sealing seat is located in the top of
the ram cavity.

Section II
HYDrt..i'l.ULIC SYST"h'..M
The 4 1/16 11 -10,000 psi WP L'WS BOP will operate with any standard
oilfield accumulator system which has adequate volwne and pressure capacity.
1.

Each set of rams requires an opening and a closing hydraulic

line.

2.

A hydraulic closing pressure of 1,500 psi will close this

LWS BOP against its rated well pressure.
The cylinders are
pressure tested to 3,500 psi in the manufacturing plant.

3.

Be sure that the accumulator system has adequate volwne to

operate all BOP functions, plus a reasonable margin for
safety.

4.

Tne closing speed of this LlJS BOP is determined by the speed

with which the necessary volume of hydraulic fluid can be
delivered to the cylinders. Excessively long hydraulic lines
or restrictions in the hydraulic lines will reduce the closing speed.

5.

Several kinds of hydraulic fluid can be used:

a.

Hydraulic oil is preferred.

Tne lubrication reduces wear
and it will not freeze.
In a closed system the oil is not
lost when the BOP is operated and the cost is negligible.

b.

Motor oil may be used.

c.

Water may be used if vrater soluble oil is added.

In cold
climates add sufficient antifreeze to prevent freezing.

d.

In an emergency use the following:

e.

1)

Freshwater. If this is added to an oil system, the

system should be drained and the water flushed from
the cylinders and lines after the emergency is over.

2)

Drilling mud. After the emergency is over, the BOP

cylinders should be torn down, cleaned and inspected.

Hever use fuel oil of any kind as it causes the rubber

goods to swell and deteriorate.

Note:

Some hydraulic fluids are corrosive to the internal

parts.
It is recorrmended the user check the corrosivcn~ss of his ~luids.

Type 77 tubing and blind rams require two identical ram assemblies
to make a set. Either ram can be installed in either side of the
BOP. Safety Precaution: If the BOP is sitting on the floor (not
flanged to a wellhead)., open only one door at a time.
The weight
of two open cioors can tip the BOP over.

A.

Ram Change Procedure:

1.

Bring the rams fully open with hydraulic pressure.

2.

Bleed off all hydraulic ram op:::::-a ting pressure to relieve

binds in the hinge pins so that the doors will swing open
easily.

3.

close the rams.
Tne Manual Lock offers the following
features:

B.

1.

If desired, the rams can be manually locked in the

closed position.

2.

If hydraulic pressure fails, the rams can be manually

closed and locked.
Note that the rams cannot be manually opened.

3.

Tne manual loe}:ing shafts are visible from outside and

provide a convenient ram position indicator when they
are in the nonlocked condition.

Operation:
In Figure I the ~.fanual Lock Piston is in the full open
position. When closing hydraulic pressure is applied, the
pistons move irnrard and seal the rams around the pipe in
the hole. See Figure II. 1ifnen opening hydraulic pressure
is applied, the pistons move outward and pull the rams out
of the well bore.
To lock the rams after closing with hydraulic pressure, turn
each locking shaft to the right until it locks. Each locking
shaft will move out"T:IC.rd until it shoulders against the cylinder head as shmm in the bottom cylinder of Figure III.
To manually close the rams without hydraulic pressure, turn
each locking shaft to the right as far as it will go.
'Ihis
will force the rams closed and the locking shafts will
remain fully extended and shouldered against the cylinder
head a.s shown in Figure III.
To open a i.ranual Lock BOP after it has been locked closed,
the following procedure must be followed:

HINGE PIN AND DOOR

A.

Purpose:
Tne hinge pin contains fluid passages to carry both opening
and closing. hydraulic fluid to the cylinder.

B.

Operation:
As shown in Figure VI the body hinge bracket is in the center
of the hinge pin and the two door hinge brackets are on
either end. Tne hinge pin attaches the door to the body
hinge bracket which is bolted and dmrel pinned to the BOP
body.
vfnen the rams are opened_, hydraulic fluid flows through the
upper passageway as follows:

1.

Fluid flmrs from the body hinge bracket (in the center)
into the hinge pin.
Tne ID of the body hinge bracket
has a groove which fits over a groove on the OD of the
hinge pin. Radial drilled holes allow the fluid to flow
into the axial passageway which is drilled from the end
of the hinge pin.

2.

T..rie fluid flm1s up the drilled hole in the center-line

of the hinge pin and is prevented from escaping out the
end by a socket head pipe plug.

3.

Near the top of the hinge pin the fluid flows out through
radial drilled holes into a groove on the OD of the hinge
pin which fits inside a groove in the ID of the door
hinge bracket.

4.

T'ne fluid then flovrs through drilled passages in the

door to the opening side of the piston.

When the rams are closed_, flow direction is reversed so

that the opening fluid is returned to the acclli~ulator.
Tne lo;1er passageway in the hinge pin is for closing fluid
and operates in the same- fashion as the opening passageway.
Fluid flow through the grooves on the OD of the hinge pin is
essential to the operation of this BOP and this fluid is contained in the proper groove by 0-rings on the OD of the hinge
pin. 'I'he hinge pin is securely anchored in place by retainer
rings.

Section VI
PROPER STORAGE OF RUBBER PARTS

NL Shaffer rubber parts are specially compounded to give maximum

storage life under the conditions nonnally encountered in oilfield service. Hmrever, proper storage will greatly increase
the service life of these items by minimizing deterioration
which can occur in storage.
1.

Always use the oldes.t rubber part first.

New parts should
be placed at the back of the bin so that the old parts will
be used first.
Tnis allows all rubber parts to be used
before significant deter~orati0n occurs from age.
If the
new parts are placed at the front of the bin, the old parts
may not be used for several years and th:s can cause serious
deterioration.

2.

Store rubber parts in a qark place if possible.

a.

Definitely do not store rubber parts out-of-doors in

direct sunlight.

b.

Items stored indoors should be away from windows and

skylights to avoid sunlight.

c.

A minimum amound of artificial lighting should be used.

3.

The storage area should be as cool as possible and rubber

parts should never be stored near heaters, steam pipes,
radiators, a hot metal roof, or other hot equipment. Be
sure that a space heater does not blow hot air over rubber
parts.

4.

Store these iter.is away from electric motors, switch gear,

or any other high voltage equipment. High voltage equipment
frequently produces ozone which attacks rubber.

5.

Store rubber parts in a relaxed position. For example, do

not bend a rubber part and force it into a small box.
Aging will be accelerated in the stressed (bent) area.

6.

Keep the storage area as dry as is practical and wipe off

any oil, grease, or liquids that may be accidentally
spilled on the rubber.

7.

If the parts must be stored for long periods, sealed containers will help considerably.
