(Interesting/General info)

Hi, Im Kaitlyn and Im going

to talk about the fourth
colony, which is Maryland. In
this presentation you will
learn about the economy,
slavery, geography, religion,
hardships, and Native
Americans in Maryland.

This is a picture of Lord

Baltimore declaring that
he founded maryland.

Facts:
Who
founded,
when,
why?

Lord Baltimore and his crew

found Maryland in 1634 and
made it his land, announcing
himself the king of Maryland.
He wanted to find land with
religious freedom for Catholics.
At first he named the new land
The Province of Maryland,
but now its just Maryland.

Economy

(jobs, main products sold/traded, services)

The Maryland colony grew crops on plantations.

Plantations were massive and consisted of the
main house, slave quarters, a dairy, blacksmith's
shop, laundry, smokehouse, and barns. This
made the plantations to a large degree,
self-sufficient.
They grew tobacco, cotton, corn, vegetables,
grain, fruit, and livestock.

Economy Continued...
The colony concentrated on
agriculture and developed
the plantations. They did
this by exporting tobacco,
cotton, corn, vegetables,
grain, fruit and livestock.
Crops were traded for items
that could not be produced
on the plantations including
shoes, lace, thread, farm
tools, and dishes.

Slavery in your Colony?

The Southern Colonies had the largest slave
population who worked on plantations.
Few people were allowed into the white people's
houses because they were a different color.
The person who made the slaves work was
Prince George, he demanded them to do
whatever he wanted.

Geography
(landforms),
main natural
resources,
weather)

Maryland was the warmest

of all 13 colonies, winter
rarely occurred during
December. It was usually
humid and hot.
Plants there grew well.
The farmers grew food for
themselves and the people
who lived there.
Maryland is about 250
miles long and 90 miles
wide and all together it all
equals up to 9,837.

Geography Continued
Here is an
example of
what weather
looked like in
Maryland
when it was
still apart of
the 13
colonies.

Religion (main religions, religious freedom,

influence town life)

Maryland wasnt forced to do a specific religion

you could do Anglicans,puritans,Quakers,and
Roman Catholics.
Also religious toleration, this law was made on
April 2, 1649.
Religious toleration is when people allow others
to think or practice any religions and beliefs
they want to.
Trade in the Southern colonies included Tobacco,
cotton, rice, indigo (dye), lumber, furs, farm products -

Challenges, Hardships (disease,

violence, weather)

It was difficult for the colonies faced

to find enough food to stay healthy.
They had very few crops to begin with
and the winters could be harsh,
affecting the crops.
Disease and Malnutrition were also
prevalent.

Native americans
Some of the tribes were the Lenape tribe, Nanticoke
tribe,Powhatan tribe, Ohio valley tribe, Susquehannock
tribe, loean tribe, and the saponi tribe.

Closing Slide (summary, positives and

negatives of colony)

The positives of Maryland was that they mostly had

good weather, the slaves at least got a little bit to
eat, they had choice of religion. The negatives were
that the slaves didnt get any respect, and
sometimes the weather was really harsh and the
slaves still had to work on the farm, they had to
work every day except for sundays. These are
some of the positives and negatives.
