AlthoughMcManamanhadacoupleofquieterseasonswiththeadventofthePremierLeague,hecontinuedto
developareputationasoneofEnglishfootball'stwobestemergingyoungwingersalongsideRyanGiggsof
ManchesterUnited,[8]withbothplayersknownto"embarrassdefenceswiththeirmazyruns,whichtoooften
lackthefinishingtouchtheydeserve."[17]
In199394,McManamanshowedfineformwithtwogoalsagainstSwindonTownandsomeassistsincluding
aspectacularrunandassistagainstTottenhamHotspur.Howeverthisformfalteredfollowingaconfidence
dropafteranincidentwithBruceGrobbelaartowardstheendofaMerseysidederby,whentheplayers
exchangedblowsafterGrobelaarlambastedMcManamanforapoorclearancewhichledtoagoalbeing
conceded(anincidentlaternamedasoneofthetopfivebustupsbetweenteammatesinPremierLeague

In199495,McManamangotanewmillionpoundcontract,andwasgivenacentral,freerrolebynewcoach
RoyEvans,whowantedtoutiliseMcManaman'snaturalrunninganddribblingabilitytodriftalloverthepark.
ItprovedasuccessfuldecisionasMcManamanbeganmesmerisingdefenceswithrunsthatwerelaterto

McManamanhadalsobeennotedforhisversatilityinhisfreerole,switchingfromrighttoleftwings,andhis

culminatedintheircollectivenickname:'TheSpiceBoys.'[39]Thesituationwasfurtheraggravatedbystoriesof
McManamanandRobbieFowler'slifestylesoffthepitchfollowinganinterviewwiththemagazine,Loaded,
whichdepictedtheduoashedonistsandscallycharacters,aswellasstoriesaboutMcManamanandFowler's
lackofdecorumanddisruptiveinfluenceinthedressingroom.[28]McManamanrespondedbyjoiningThe
Timestowriteaweeklycolumn,becomingthefirstfootballerofhisgenerationtodoso.[40]
McManamanwasalsocriticisedforscoringtoofewgoals,althoughhedidmakeupforthiswithaformidable
rateofassistsforthelikesofFowlerandlaterMichaelOwen,withOwensayingthat"Liverpoolatthetime

Contractwrangles
InAugust1997,Liverpool,havingbeenunabletoagreeanewcontractwithMcManamanandfearingthatthe
playermightleaveonaBosmanfreetransfer,accepteda12millionbidfortheplayerfromBarcelona.[44]The
dealsubsequentlyfellapartamidstrecriminationsabouttheplayer'sremunerationdemandsandBarcelona's
motivesforthebid,beinginnegotiationwithRivaldoatthesametimeandsnubbingMcManamanwhenhe
travelledtoSpaintomeetthem.[44][45]Bytheendofthesaga,thewholefiascoseemedtobeanonaffair,with
BarcelonasigningRivaldoafterSirBobbyRobsonintervenedandtoldVanGaalthatMcManamanwasa
cosmeticplayerwhowouldn'tscoreBarcelona18goalsaseason,[46]whileMcManamanhimselfstatedthathe
hadnodesiretoleaveLiverpoolandwithtwoyearsleftonhiscontractwassimplynotinanyrushtosigna
newone.[47]Asubsequentbidof11millionfromJuventusinNovemberofthesameyearwasrejectedbyboth

McManamanwasnamedLiverpoolcaptainatthestartofthe199899season,[2][11]butcontractnegotiations
continuedtoflounderastheclubcouldnotmatchthesumsavailabletoMcManamanifheleftasafree
agent.[50]HavingbeenoverlookedbyGlennHoddleforthe1998WorldCupsquadinanunderachieving
Liverpoolside,[51]denouncedintheEnglishmediaasbeinggreedyandbolsteredbyadvicefromthelikesof
fellowprofessionalsPaulInce,PaulGascoigne,DavidPlatt,andChrisWaddle,[52]McManamanpublicly
announcedhisdesiretoplayabroad.[53]
NumerousEuropeanclubscircledthesoontobefreeagentwithRealMadridquicklybeingseenashismost
likelydestination.[54]InJanuary1999itwasreportedthatMcManamanwastalkingtoRealwiththeplayer
reportedlyoffered60,000aweekandnearly2millionasasigningonfee.[55]On30January,McManaman
passedamedicalandsignedanofficialprecontractwiththeclubwhichwouldmakehimthebestpaidBritish
footballertodate.[56][57]HedeclinedtoposeinaRealMadridshirtatthecontractsigningevent,outofrespect
forLiverpool'sfans.[58]
McManaman'simageofbeingacontractrebelandmercenarywasexacerbatedbyhisinvolvementinayear
longdisputebetween1997and1998withUmbro,hisfootballbootsponsor.Umbrosuedhimforbreachof
contractforknowinglywearingReebokbrandedbootsincontraventionofthedeal,anddeliberately"blacking
out"theirlogoonhisbootsinprotest.[59]McManamanarguedthathiscontractwasunenforceableandan
unlawfulrestraintoftrade.[60]McManamanclaimedthathewasbeingexploited.Hehiredtheservicesofagent

againsthimin1997,whichMcManamanacceptedandapologisedfor.[62]Ayearon,however,McManaman
continuedtodishonourthedeal.[63]HefinallywonanoutofcourtsettlementinOctober1998,freeinghimto
negotiatewithothercompaniesforwhatheregardedasremunerationappropriatetohisstatus.[64]Thecase,in
additiontohisLiverpoolcontractwranglessawthemediadescribeMcManamanasthe"starperformerinhis
ownsoap",[65]thoughMcManaman'sLiverpoolmanagerRoyEvansdefendedtheplayer,stating:"Maccaisso
laidbackyouwouldneverknowhewashurtinginside.Buthehasbeen.Someofthecriticismshavebeenso
unfair.TypicalofMacca,he'srespondedmagnificently."[65]
Departure
HavingsignedtheprecontractwithMadrid,McManamanstillhadfivemonthsleftonhiscontractat
Liverpool.NewmanagerGrardHoullier,whohadreplacedEvansasfullcoachfollowingthefailureoftheir
jointmanagerialrole,waswidelybelievedtowanttogetridofthe"SpiceBoys"mentalityandcavalier
attitudesattheclub[66]havingtoldmanyplayerstheyweresurplustorequirements(includingJasonMcAteer,
PhilBabb,RobJones,StigBjornebyeandPaulInce).Whilestatingthathewouldhavepreferredthattheplayer
stayed,hesaidthattheclubhadtorespectMcManaman'sdecisiontoexercisehisrighttoleaveattheendofhis
contract.Houlliersaid:"Itwasn'tunexpected.Stevehadalwaysmaintainedthathewantedtomoveabroadand
Ihavetorespectthat...Emotionallywewillmisshimbecausehe'saLiverpoollad,andneedlesstosayasa
playeryoucan'tfaulthimbecausehehasimmenseability...Iwillhavetoreplacehim,it'smyjobtogooutand
findanotherSteveMcManaman.".[67]
InMcManaman'sfinalgamesfortheclubinthesecondhalfofthe199899season,hebeganturninginmixed
performances,withthemediaaccusinghimofplayingouthisfinalseasonina"desultorymanner".[68]Hisform
dippedattimes,arguablyduetoacombinationofinjuries,beingrestrictedtosubstituteappearances(as
Houllierwantedtocuttheside'sdependencyonhisgameplayandreplacehim[3]),andlossofconfidencein
certaingameswhereeventhehomefansturnedagainsthimoverthecontractdebacle,withsomelabellinghim
a'traitor'andaJudasfigure.[69]McManamantoldthemediaafteronesuchgamewherehebecamevictimof
the"booboys",saying:"That'sunderstandable,whenIcameofftheotherdayIknewthereactiontherewas
goingtobe.ButIthinkiftheyputthemselvesinthesamepredicament,andthefactthatIhavebeenat
Liverpoolfor12yearsandthatIwouldliketotestmyselfinaforeigncountry,that'sunderstandable."[70]
McManamanalsosufferedpersonaltragedywhenhismotherIrene,whowasbedriddenwithbreastcancerfor
twoyears,diedduringthistime.[71]
ThecombinationofthesefactorsmeantMcManamansufferedalossofform,but,McManamanmanagedto
rallyandpickuphisplayrightattheendofthatlastcampaign.McManamanscoredacrucialgoalawayat
BlackburnRovers,setupadramaticinjurytimeequaliserwithathroughballforPaulIncetoscoreinfrontof
theKopagainstManchesterUnited,[72]andscoredthewinnerfromoutsidetheareawithahalfvolleyto
completethefullturnaroundresultagainstTottenhamHotspur,aftertrailing20athalftime.[73]Inwhatwas
thefinalmatchoftheseason,andwhatwouldbeMcManaman'sfinalmatchandfinalcontributiononthepitch
fortheclub,McManamanassistedKarlHeinzRiedlewithagoalattheKopwithatrademarkrightwingrun
andpullbackasLiverpoolwon30againstWimbledon,enablingMcManamantoendhiscareerattheclubto
astandingovation,alapofhonouratAnfield,[74]andatworowsquadfarewellattheentranceoftheplayers'

InspiteofthesideonlywinningtwotrophiesduringhistimewithLiverpool,McManaman'sachievementsat

Liverpoolforfourseasonsincludingaclubrecordformostappearances,andatthetimeofleavingthe
PremiershiphadthesecondhighestratioofPremierLeagueassistspergame,with112assistsin272
appearances,[78]withatotalof142assistsfortheclub[79][80]anaverageofoneassistpertwoandahalfgames.
Asof201112,McManamanholdsthe14thpositiononthePremiership'sAllTimeAssistscharts.[81]Until
2011,McManamanheldtherecordforgreatestnumberofassistsinLiverpoolhistory,aheadofStevenGerrard,
whohassinceovertakenhim.[82]McManamanisalsoranked5thonthePremierLeaguealltimeassistscharts
fornumberofgamesittooktohit100assists,andalsointermsofbeingthe5thyoungestplayertohit100

SpanishfootballsinceGaryLinekerhadmovedtoFCBarcelonafromEvertonin1986.Thereafterheproved
