Dear Educator,
Thank you for downloading this free sampler pack of our
brand new, Fall, Four-in-One Reading Practice Pack for upper
elementary students. This sampler includes four of the twenty
pages to try out with your class. Youll find a short passage,
vocabulary questions, comprehension questions, and an open
response on each page. We have provided the CCSS for your
planning purposes for the recommended grades, 3-5 in the Table
of Contents. If you enjoy using them, we hope youll consider
purchasing the entire set. Please be sure to be on the lookout for

Johnny Appleseed

John Chapman, or Johnny Appleseed as most


people know him, had a vision to plant apple trees
all over the expanding United States. He collected
seeds from apple orchards where farmers made
apple cider. Johnny was able to obtain seeds from
the farmers and maintain his mission. He walked
everywhere he traveled, sometimes enduring
dangerous conditions. John was a peaceful man,
however, and made friends with all who met him.
Never harming anyone, he was able to plant
thousands of apple trees for everyone to enjoy.

Roasting Pumpkin Seeds

Arent sure what to do with the leftover pumpkin


seeds from the pumpkin you carved? Why not roast
pumpkin seeds? Heres how. First, carefully rinse all
the seeds, and pat them dry with a towel. Preheat
your oven to 200 degrees. Next, spread them in a
single layer on a large baking sheet. Place the seeds
in the oven to dry out thoroughly for about a half
hour. Next, remove the seeds, and turn the oven up
to 400 degrees. Drizzle a thin layer of oil over the
seeds. Sprinkle seasoned salt over all of the seeds.
Finally, roast for an additional 30 minutes. Enjoy!

Choosing A Costume

Ryan was stumped on what to be for Halloween. He


was tired of monster masks, vampire capes, and
wizard hats. Determined, but undecided, Ryan set off
to the local costume shop. He searched aisle after
aisle, making sure that none of his classmates spotted
him. Just then, on aisle ten, he found it. The costume
that would surely take first prize in the annual
Halloween parade at school. Carefully, he took the
costume off the rack and walked up to the counter.
Everyone is going to love this! he said to himself
with a smug grin.

Veterans Day

Veterans Day is honored on November 11 every year.


It was originally named Armistice Day. The first
Armistice Day was celebrated on November 11,
1919 to celebrate the first anniversary of the
end of Word War I. It became a National Holiday in
1932. Later, in 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower
changed the name to Veterans Day to honor veterans
of all American wars. Veterans Day honors all living
members of the military.
