Ice*Meister Model 9732-AERO

ICE INDICATOR SYSTEM
Technical Data Sheet

Figure 1-- Ice*Meister Model 9732-AERO ice indicator system monitors the optical characteristics of whatever substance
is in contact with the probe, either air (no ice) or H2O (ice alert).

2
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
ICE*MEISTER MODEL 9732-AERO ICE INDICATOR is demonstrably the smallest, lightest,
most sensitive ice indicator aloft today. It adds lightness to any aircraft. It's entirely optical -- when ice
forms, it forms directly on the optical surfaces. There are no moving parts. See figure 1.
Because of 9732's slender cross-sectional area, ice forms on it earlier than on large-area airframe
members, including windshields, wing leading edges, tailplane leading edges, wheels, struts, etc
The complete Model 9732-AERO system consists of an ice sensor probe, an extension tube, a small
interface module, and two lengths of lightweight blue cable that connect the module to the probe on one
side, and to host system on the other. See figure 2a, 2b.

Figure 2a,b -- Ice*Meister Model 9732-AERO ice indicating system complete, module containing Model 9733 interface board

Most preferably, the ice sensing probe should be mounted beneath the wing, with the air gap facing aft.
This arrangement protects the optical elements in the air gap from abrasion by the oncoming air stream,
and from precipitating dirt while the host aircraft is parked on the tarmac. A convenient way to install
9732 is with a 5/16"-24 threaded nipple from the OAT gauge of a Bonanza A36. See figure 3.

Figure 3a,b -- Suggested installation with threaded nipple from Bonanza A36 OAT gauge.

3
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
In non-icing conditions, the aircraft's ambient wind stream removes liquid H2O from the probe. Air is in
contact with the probe, the probe senses air and indicates no-ice.
In icing conditions, H2O molecules freeze together and accumulate on the probe. The solid
accumulation of H2O molecules resists removal by the ambient windstream. H2O molecules stick
together and accumulate on the probe. Ice is in contact with the probe, the probe senses ice, and
system indicates one or more of three icing conditions: ice alert, more ice, saturation. See fig 4 below.

Figure 4 -- Test program conducted in the Icing Research Tunnel at NASA Glenn demonstrates Ice*Meister Model 9732-AERO
conforms to defacto standard Minimum Operational Performance for In-flight Icing Detection Systems SAE AS 5498 5.2.1.1.1.
See also SAE AIR 4367 4.11. Note Pitot tube in left foreground.

CONNECTION TO INSTRUMENT PANEL

9732-AERO provides a rate-of-accumulation feature. Three discrete logic (TRUE/FALSE) outputs
cumulatively indicate ice alert, more ice and saturation ice. The pilot monitors the rate of icing
accumulation for advisory as to when to disengage autopilot, activate anti-icing systems, activate
engine anti-ice, climb, descend, turn around, etc. See figure 5 below.

Ice*Meister Model 9732-AERO can also be tested by using the optically-calibrated acrylic plastic test
chip provided with the unit. FIRST -- Connect the four pins of the 9732 probe to the four socketed wires
exiting from the probe side of the interface module. SECOND -- Connect the two power wires exiting
from the instrument panel side of the interface module to the instrument panel's + 12 VDC, and also
connect the three output wires to an appropriate user-defined annunciator panel. Icing status will initially
indicate no ice, then as chip penetrates the air gap, the annunciator panel will progress from no ice >>
ice alert >> more ice >> saturation ice. Then, slowly withdraw the chip and observe the status reverse
sequence, from saturation ice >> more ice >> ice alert >> no ice. This completes the test.

Figure 7a,b -- Model 9732-AERO is tested with the optically-calibrated acrylic plastic test chip. In case the provided chip is lost or
misplaced, a standard business card will suffice.

TESTING II
In addition to the optically-calibrated acrylic plastic test chip, Model 9732-AERO can also be tested for ice
sensitivity with a sprayed blast of Radio Shack tetrafluoroethane component cooler p/n 64-4321; leaves
no residue. Cold spray freezes moisture out of the ambient air, creates detectable surface frost in air gap.

Figure 8 a,b -- Testing with cold spray.

Figure 9 a,b -- Radio Shack component cooler. Be certain to use ONLY tetrafluoroethane component cooler to avoid damage to the
acrylic optical components in the air gap.

2. This document is not contractual. Nothing in it constitutes or implies a warranty or guaranty of any
kind, explicit or implicit. Warranty information is given only in separate "warranty" statement.
3. Plastic optical fiber connections between transducer probe and circuit board must be protected from
ambient light.
4. Plastic optical probe is made of Polymethylmethacrylate, also called PMMA, acrylic,

"ice". For best results, allow unit to soak at ambient temperature before evaluating.
7. This unit is not a measuring instrument, and provides no specific calibration.

8. For best results, test under airborne icing conditions -- subdued sunlight, no incandescent lamps.
