The Principal of Teaching Pronunciation Using CALL

The Technology-assisted language learning (CALL) is the use of technology
enhanced techniques in EF learning and teaching (Anani, 1989). One aspect of CALL is
Technology-assisted pronunciation (CAP) based on the application of technology to teach
the segmental and supra-segmental features of sound system. It is stated by Bott (2005)
as the use of digitized speech for improving language pronunciation.
CAP (Technology-Assisted Pronunciation) has been used

in

teaching

pronunciation to achieve two purposes: assessing and teaching stress patterns of EF

pronunciation. Because of the failures of EEL students in Iran to progress in
pronunciation, the researcher decided to introduce above mentioned software (CAP) as a
beneficial and authentic materials for teaching EF pronunciation. Technology-Assisted
Language Learning (CALL) is the use of technology enhanced methods and techniques in
language learning and teaching (Dekaney, 2003).
CAP has best-quality for sound giving the students the chances to look at
articulator movements to producing sounds (Grant, 1995). He also points out that good
pronunciation ability can be optimized not by segmental but supra-segmental production.
Therefore, this research is based on supra-segmental features to help students to learn
pronunciation ability. Four important factors for stressed syllable in the word can be:
loudness, pitch, length, and quality (Bott, 2005).
In order to get more familiar with stress, its description is necessary, so the
definition is as the prominence of a syllable, achieved through a relative increase in
loudness. It also is longer in duration and be at a higher pitch.

2. The Important of Teaching Pronunciation Using CALL

In

teaching pronunciation skills

Computer-based

activities/programs

pronunciation instruction include the following:

a. Articulatory charts
b. Sample words utilizing the targeted sound
c. Minimal pairs/comparison words
d. Listening discrimination of minimal pairs within a sentence
e. Sample sentences with several words utilizing the targeted sound
f. Dictations

of

g. Cloze exercises
h. Supra-segmental exercises (including intonation, rhythm, stress, and timing)
In teaching pronunciation, there are some aspects that the students have to focus
about namely:
1. Intuitive-imitative approach
The learner listens to and imitates the sound and rhythms of the target
language without the assistance of explicit instruction. Technologies, such as
audiotapes, videos, and computer-based programs and websites, can offer rich
resources of native speech as good models.
2. Analytic-linguistic approach
The learner is provided with explicit, structured teaching of speech
features utilizing articulator descriptions and charts of speech apparatus, phonetic
alphabet and vowel charts, and a variety of interactive speech analysis software
and websites.
3. Current integrative approach
- Pronunciation is viewed as an integral component of communication, rather than
an isolated drill and practice sub-skill
- Pronunciation is practiced within meaningful task-based activities
-Use pronunciation-focused listening activities to facilitate the learning of
pronunciation
- There is more focus on the supra-segmental of stress, rhythm, and intonation as
practiced in extended discourse beyond the phoneme and word level.
- Pronunciation is taught to meet the learners' particular needs

- Goals of pronunciation instruction: The primary goals of pronunciation teaching

are for the learner to develop intelligible speech and to be able to effectively
communicate in the target language (Miller, 2000).

3. Guideline of Teaching Pronunciation Using CALL

There are some ways to teach pronunciation using call, such as:
1. www.howtopronounce.com
How to pronounce is a free online dictionary with audio pronunciation and
definition of a word, for everyone to learn the way in which a word or name is
spoken and to share, so that people can say it correctly. This online dictionary is to
assist how to learn or say words, names, drugs, medical terminology correctly. No
software download required to use word pronouncer, phonetic, and audio in this
website. The users are just to put a word in search engine and play the sound with
clicking the sounds picture.
2. Cambridge Advance Learners Dictionary
Cambridge advance learners dictionary was first published in 1995 under
the name Cambridge International Dictionary of English, by the Cambridge
University Press. The last edition was published in 2013. The dictionary has over
140.000 words, phrases, and meanings. We can use this application with installing
to our personal computer (PC) or laptop. This application also can be our assistant
in teaching and learning pronunciation because it provides the sound from the
words in American and British English.
3. AVS Audio Editor
AVS audio editor is software which allows making and editing of audio
data. In this software, we can make and edit our audio. At the same time we can
analyze our audio weather is it correct or not. This software is very helpful in
teaching and learning pronunciation. The advantage of this application is we dont
need internet connection because this software is used in offline.
4. Youtube
Youtube is one of the video playing using the internet connection. There
are so many videos in youtube like comedy, movie, educational, etc. In youtube

also there are so many videos about teaching and learning pronunciation. We can
use youtube to learn how to spell a word or sentence correctly.
4. Demonstration
Teaching and learning using CALL is helpful in teaching learning process
especially in teaching and learning pronunciation. All of the applications above are easy
to use. The students and the teachers only use it with clicking and start practicing. By
using those applications, we can record and listen our voice. Not only recording and
listening our voice but also we can listen the correct pronunciation from those online
dictionaries.
There are two types of CALL in teaching and learning pronunciation using
applications such as online and offline. In online, we require internet connection. When
the internet connection is already on, we can use the application. In offline we dont need
internet connection so we can use it as long as the laptop or personal computer (PC) is on.
5. Conclusion
From the explanation above, we can conclude that teaching and learning
pronunciation with CALL make it easy. There are some application in teaching and
learning using CALL like www.howtopronounce.com, Cambridge Advance Learners
Dictionary, AVS audio editor, youtube, etc. Two ways to operate the application are
online and offline.
